Maple - Private Island Retreat on Lake Champlain
Stay on a private island in Lake Champlain.

Accessible only by boat, Garden Island is a 30-acre private island offering a rare and peaceful Vermont escape. Maple is the island’s flagship home, a spacious Victorian lake house designed for gathering, with a sweeping wraparound porch and open lawn overlooking the water.
Maple is a true Victorian-era lake house, originally built in the late 1800s, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship with original hardwood floors, intricate wood paneling, marble fireplaces, and stained-glass details, a grand yet welcoming centerpiece of Garden Island.

Inside, the home offers five bedrooms, multiple living areas, a spacious kitchen, a formal dining room, and a large game room with a card table and lounge space. Generous common areas make Maple ideal for extended families or multi-generational stays, comfortably accommodating up to 12 guests.
Guests enjoy full access to the island’s sandy beach, open meadow, and wooded walking trails. Spend your days kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, or taking the paddleboat out across Converse Bay. All non-motorized lake equipment is included in your stay. Swim from the dock, relax in a hammock, or unwind on the porch as the sun sets over the Adirondacks. With no cars on the island, the setting is calm, natural, and intentionally unplugged.
Garden Island is located in Charlotte, Vermont, just 25 minutes from Burlington. Explore Shelburne Farms and Shelburne Museum, hike Mt. Philo for panoramic lake views, enjoy farm-to-table dining at Philo Ridge Farm, or stroll Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace and waterfront. Secluded yet convenient, Maple offers the experience of a historic lake retreat with easy access to Vermont’s best attractions.

A spectacular place to stay with a group!

A Maple house on Garden Island was absolutely amazing. This was our second time staying and it definitely lived up to my memories. We stayed there for a family reunion and other members of our extended family rented the other cabins on the island. What a magical trip! Garden Island is one of my favorite places to stay in the summer and one of the best kept secrets in Vermont. Maple has two bunkbed rooms for the kids, even though you only see one room in the pictures. It was perfect for our gaggle of kids. All of the rooms are well appointed and comfortable. They have lots of fans help tremendously to cool things down at night. We were very comfortable sleeping there. The kitchen, and communal areas are perfect for hosting a big group gathering. The only thing that might bother some people is that there are only two bathrooms - one with a shower (downstairs) and one with a bathtub (upstairs). We spent so much time outside at the beach or playing on the expensive lawn that only having two bathrooms didn’t bother us in the slightest. The one in front of me is a great place for the kids to run around and play and they have various swings and structures in place for the kids to plan on. The beach is the highlight of Garden Island though - soft sand, a floating matt, and plenty of kayaks and paddle boards to use. We love paddling around the island and exploring the walking trail that loops the perimeter. The owners and the summer crew that work there are all very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. This was our sixth year, staying at one of the cabins on Garden Island and we will keep coming back as often as possible. It is a beautiful and relaxing place to spend a few days or a week!
