About this property

Restored Historic Home Steps from Downtown Whitefish, Sleeps up to 9

The "Houston" House is a newly restored historic home located in the heart of downtown Whitefish and minutes from Big Mountain Ski Resort. The restoration project has been featured in the Daily Interlake and Whitefish Pilot. The home is located on Central Avenue and steps away from the restaurants and shops in downtown Whitefish and a mere block from Baker Park and the Whitefish River Trail System. Free Snow Bus shuttles to Big Mountain ski resort. The home was named after Dr. Houston who was the first town doctor and he lived in the house with his family in 1905. The town hospital was immediately behind the house.

The Houston House shares the same property with the Carriage House (which is rented separately). The Carriage House is located on the back of the property and has its own small patio. The access to the Carriage House is through the same back fence gate shared by the Houston House.

Host profile image
We are new hosts on VRBO and listed the Houston House after a 2 year restoration project which was an amazing experience. We have returned the home to the original 1905 look with modern amenities. We love Whitefish because of the people and the Montana beauty that surrounds us. You can do everything outdoors here - hiking, skiing, golfing, cycling, water sports and everything in between.

Why they chose this property

The Houston House is a few hours down from our home. We had always wanted to restore it and when the family that owned it was ready to sell, they came to us because they knew we wanted to restore it to its original look and feel. It is literally in the "Heart" of Whitefish and is "1 block away" from everything.

What makes this property unique

The restoration of the home began in 2021 and was completed in 2023. The restoration has been featured in the Whitefish Pilot (November 2021 and January 2023) and the Daily Interlake. The home was originally built for the town doctor in 1905 and the Whitefish Hospital was behind it. In the 1960s, the home was converted into 4 apartments, 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs. It also has a "Carriage House" at the back of the property (also restored and rented separately). We decided to convert the house back to a single family home. We hired the dream team for the architectural work (Doug Rhodes) and contractor (Leo Keane of Northwest Country Builders). We also had a local artist paint the mural in the dining room. There are so many stories about the restoration that we should write a book about it. We hope that you will experience the Houston House and we will be sure to regale you with many more stories about its history.
