We absolutely loved our 2 night stay in the caboose. It was clean and spotless inside with everything you need to stay for a couple of days. There was a lot of rail traffic both day and night which is great if you are a railfan like me. We would absolutely stay here again should we ever visit Tehachapi in the future
The caboose is beautifully renovated and makes a perfect place to hang out and watch trains in a great location. We look forward to coming back next year!
What an awesome place for anyone who enjoys trains and watching them roll past daily. The caboose is done so nicely and what a treat it was. The entire experience is one that will be hard to top!! It’s a must go and experience for all train buffs!!
The Yellow Caboose is a great place to stay! The amenities were perfect for my husband and I as we spent a few nights here after we got married in town. My husband is a railfan and he loved having the scanner inside that helped alert us to inbound trains. We enjoyed having our meals at the table in the kitchen and outside on the deck watching trains go by. The searchlight signal was especially fun when we sat outside and enjoyed the stars. The directions and instructions from the Janine and Dan were very clear and helpful.
This stay was a surprise for our son who has been obsessed with trains and the Tehachapi Loop is at the top for him. What an experience and one we will never forget. The caboose was perfect for us along with the details and hosts being available if needed.
We had the most wonderful stay. Our children were so excited to stay inside a newly restored caboose. We treasured every moment of it and can't wait to return! Thanks again!
We had a wonderful stay at the Yellow Union Pacific Caboose. We found it to have everything we needed and very clean. Communication with host was great. Highly recommend if you are looking for a unique experience and love trains.
We loved the caboose, it was spotless and comfortable. It is also within sight and sound of the very active train tracks. Ear plugs were provided which helped but it was not easy to sleep. We don’t happen to be train enthusiasts but if you are this is the perfect place!

Hello Casey I see you rated us 4 out of 5 stars. I am just curious what did not meet your 5 star expectation. I see you stated it was not easy to sleep however our description noted that we do not have control over the train traffic and noise. Pictures show how close the train is to the caboose and our reviews also mention the trains.
We did accept your special request of a one night stay to be given a 4 star review was just a shock to us as we feel we disclosed the train information and accommodated your special request to then receive our only 4 star review dropping our perfect 5 star status was very upsetting. Please let us know what else we could have done/said in our posting to make it so you would have understood better what to expect.
This place is amazing. Perfectly designed and constructed. Every inch of this place is so well done. It’s a perfect Tehachapi experience too. The owners are organized and thorough, which made the whole trip so easy. We will be back!

Love how they have turned this caboose into a wonderful getaway! The kids loved staying up on the cupola and we all loved the porch for watching trains and playing games. The decor is lovely and the caboose is clean. The kitchen was great for making dinner. The bathroom/shower was bigger than expected. Love the privacy of the while place. Thank you!

Thanks Jason. So glad you enjoyed your stay. You are welcome back anytime!!
Fantastic place to stay for a railfan. Perfect and comfortable views from inside and out. It is an obvious labor love renovating this historic caboose. It's just a few miles from the Tehachapi Loop. However, we enjoyed the viewing from the deck even more. It was nice to have a Keurig machine for morning coffee. The queen bed is comfortable, enough that I didn't have to move to the cupola because of my twitchy hubby. The rolling umbrella on the deck made it wonderfully comfortable. We also saw many bird varieties and mule deer. It will be quite the memory for my railfan.
100% recommended. Loved the novelty of staying in a caboose, but it’s more than meets the eye. Super well done, clean and well kept. We look forward to coming back!
Hands down the best property we’ve stayed at.
Easy check in and checkout. The caboose was great! Treats and ear plugs were a great touch. Was my wife’s birthday weekend and the owners left her a birthday card. We loved our stay and will definitely do it again.

Thanks for the kind words George. I hope your wife had a great birthday and got some rest and relaxation with all the train traffic and honking lol. We hope to see you again!!
They did a great job of restoring this caboose and making it a great little getaway for those who love trains and want a cozy little place trackside to watch. So much interesting things to see and do around here, the caboose was filled with interesting pictures, books, and even a radio scanner to listen to the train crews. There was a beautiful deck to watch the trains passing by, and a comfortable bed to sleep in at night. We will definitely return!

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay. We cant wait for your return.
Unique experience staying in the yellow caboose! It’s located on a hill that overlooks the train tracks and from afar you can see the traffic on hwy 58. The deck is perfect for sitting and enjoying the wildlife (deer) and for birdwatching. Indoors everything is perfectly furnished and immaculately clean. It’s a cozy VRBO and we’d book it again. Hosts respond quickly to any questions which was very much appreciated.
They did an amazing job rennovating this caboose into a cozy get away. The location is incredible with the view of the mountains, passing trains, and wildlife. Everything was above and beyond our expectations. While the caboose puts you just far away from everything for a nice retreat but all the shops and restaurants in town were just a short drive away. My family had an awesome time staying here and we cant recommend it enough. We will definitely be back in the summer!

About the host
Hosted by Dan and Janine Tufts
Growing up around trains with my dad being the influencer, the caboose was my favorite part of the train. Now living next to one of the busier railroad main lines in the country (Union Pacific owned, BNSF shared) ,my wife and I owning our own Caboose idea came to mind when a local short-line was selling off some of their rolling stock. Ex-Union Pacific CA-6 Caboose #25322 built in September of '55 spent most of its working career in Kansas, Colorado, Utah And Idaho. We couldn't have imagined having our own caboose, but as the wheels start spinning (no pun intended), the idea snow balled into a reality. Initial intent was to do an exterior make-over to bring it back to life. Well, that simple idea didn't last very long as friends would come over suggesting how the location, nostalgia, and the many others out there from all ages with the same railroad interest, -'This has to be shared!' So the complete overhaul began to what we can now offer as a comfortable, relaxing stay to create memories with family of friends.
