Gorgeous Lake View, next to meadow, WiFi, Game Room, wildlife
Looking for your escape? Have fun playing in the game-room, taking in the incredible unobstructed views, and watching the wildlife venture by! We have WIFI internet, so you can stay connected during your get-away. This beautiful, fully stocked home has an amazing view of Lake Cuyamaca and is a short drive to the historic gold mining town of Julian. The house features two queen beds and 4 twin beds. A large kitchen and dining area is ideal for cooking and gathering together with direct access to the redwood deck which stretches the front length of the house, great for enjoying the unobstructed views. Both the master bedroom and the loft have views of the lake. A fireplace is found in the family room, along with a HDTV, Roku media streamer in "guest mode" (you use your own streaming accounts), Blu-Ray/DVD player, and surround-sound audio system with bluetooth receiver. We have over-the-air HDTV and wireless internet, but not cable/dish. In the basement you will find the game room, where everyone wants to spend their time shooting pool, playing air hockey, foosball, a vintage Super Nintendo gaming system, or many of the table games. Younger kids will love setting up giant Brio train sets or using their imagination as they build fantasy worlds with the buckets of toys available to them.
A washer and dryer are also located in the basement.
The kitchen is fully stocked with all standard utensils, cookware, and appliances. Linens are also provided for your use.
We have central air and heating, but all times of the year offer something unique. Fall and winter are the most popular for the local San Diegans to visit the mountains due to the fall colors and 'Apple Days' in Julian, and the snow and cold weather that can come with winter. Spring can be beautiful as the hills turn deeply green and flowers are in abundance, and summer offers warm evenings that are easily spent on the deck marveling at all the stars which you just can't see from urban areas.
Please be aware that the cabin is on septic and the septic system cannot handle volume of use beyond the listed occupancy. We cannot accept requests for parties, wedding receptions, or any other gatherings of people for this reason.
There is also no refuse collection and the county closed the nearby dump - most residents carry their trash out with them when they go "down the hill". We are not a hotel, it can be days between guest departure and when housekeeping cleans. Trash left behind invites insects and bad smells if indoors, animals tear it apart if left outdoors. Thus, trash needs to be taken with you when you leave, which is not uncommon for cabin rentals. We have a powered trash compactor and provide bags, it does an amazing job of minimizing the size of your trash!

Everything was clean and the location was great. The view from the main room was unreal, with the lake and mountains right there. It was a little different having to put our own sheets on the beds, but I understand their reasoning. It ensures that the sheets are clean because they were folded up on the bed and you put them on yourself. The game room was great! My kids spent hours down there whenever we were not out exploring. The owners left detailed notes/signs and explanations throughout the house, so It was easy to know what to do and what not to do, or why something was a certain way. It was a great experience, and we hope to come stay there again in the future.
Family of 7, grandparents celebrating Valentines and Birthday. Lori was great, answered each and every questions with grace and thoroughness. House is very well stocked with everything needed for a great time. Playroom downstairs has adult and kiddos toys. Kitchen also, even necessities - sugar, coffee, hot choc, S&P. Just bring clothing and food; everything is too hand. I did bring my kettle and teabags as I cannot survive without! View is marvelous. We will definitely return.
We have stayed at many VRBO listings in different places from the South to the west coast. This is absolutely the most beautiful homes we have stayed at. From all the great amenities to the gorgeous views for the mountains and lake. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us and I would love to stay there again soon!!!
Relaxing cabin with scenic lake view, game room, and many nearby hiking options. We stayed in spring, with a family group of kids, parents, and grandparents. Multiple entertainment options make this a great place for family groups. The cabin is far enough away from the main road that it is very peaceful. Birds were plentiful, with sightings of turkey vultures, woodpeckers, and scrub jays visible from the large windows of the living room or deck. It’s great for birdwatching, and the option to sit inside or outside is nice. The game room and the collection of board games is great for unwinding. We got unlucky with a broken air hocky table during our stay. Fortunately, there were plenty of other gaming options. We stayed Monday through Friday, so the owners were not available to drive out to make a repair, but they were very responsive by text. For those that prefer home-cooked meals, the kitchen is well-furnished with appliances, cookware, and dishware. We enjoyed the convenience of being able to cook family meals. In addition to bringing food, plan on bringing your own Ziploc bags, napkins, coffee filters or k-cups, etc. The general store at Lake Cuyamaca is not consistently stocked, and the store shelves were over half empty when we went looking for more coffee filters to supplement the few that the housekeeper had set out in the coffee/tea nook. Also, the air can be very dry in the mountains, so plan on sealing your coffee / k-cups well to keep them fresh.
We’ve stayed here multiple times and always have a great time. It’s clean, comfortable and has lots to do for all ages. If you are looking for a spot to get away near Julian, we’d highly recommend the hideaway.

Thank you for staying with us again, Mike, and for the positive review!
This was our 3rd time coming here, and once again a wonderful get away. My boys (and my husband and I) loved the game room. Look forward to our next trip!
Great location. Amazing view. Loved the game room.
Game room had a pool table, foosball table, and an air hockey table. There were video games and toys. There was always something for the kiddos to do.

Awesome stay! Beautiful lake view, walking distance from the lake, fun playroom for kids overall comfortable and clean and well stocked. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks for a peaceful stay!
My family and I had a great time at the cabin it was everything you can expect for a great getaway and much much more. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. I’m looking forward to staying here again next year
This place is AMAZING! This is our second year renting this get away and my family love’s it here. The game room is what my kids love the most ,they have everything you need. The owner were very responsive and gave us a lot of good tips since it was snowing. Till next year Hansen property!
We celebrated my 60th birthday at this lovely and spacious home with a gorgeous view of Lake Cuyamaca. We enjoyed cooking in the well equipped kitchen and hiking on the many nearby trails. Instructions were ample and easy to follow. I hope to return in the future.
We loved staying at this home. Wonderful lake view, and well equipped home. Kitchen has plenty of what is needed and we had more than enough towels for five us. The downstairs game room was a lot of fun. The trip to Julian is short and having the trails walkable distance away was perfect! We’ll definitely be back. Thank you!

wonderful place
This place is great for everyone, but ideal for families. It is updated, clean, and very comfortable. The views from the deck are incredible. And the basement game room kept the kids happy and entertained whenever we had some downtime. Just make sure you download your digital music, no streaming up here. :)
We arrived to find the perfect location for our weekend of celebrating our friend's last days as a bachelor. The cabin was nestled on the hillside with an inspiring sweeping view of Lake Cuyamaca and surrounding mountains. At night, billions of stars shine bright and the Milky Way is seen streaking across the abyss of space. The cabin comes with everything we needed to enjoy our weekend and we appreciate the Hansen's for having us at their humble hillside home. It was such a fun time at the perfect lakeside spot!!
The cabin / house was clean, the host was outstanding in regard to response and requests. Towels, coffee, plates bowls, TP, PT, everything was there, even soap and shampoo. Thank you!
Look forward to staying there again, great time.
The game room could use better lighting over the Foose ball table and the air hockey table. Other than that, Great Place!
We had such a blast at the Hansen cabin. It's even more awesome than the photos... Check in was a breeze and the owners were quick to answer any questions by text. The view of the lake is fantastic and we spent some lovely moments on the deck just relaxing. I was grateful for the big kitchen and comfy beds, while the kids enjoyed the big TV and the game room (which is waaayy bigger and has more games than the photos show). Only downside was having to pack out our trash, but with the trash compactor we got it down to a reasonable size, so it was really no problem. Highly recommend!

Thanks for the review, Jill! We have to admit, a lot of our photos are old, and do not use the “fish eye” type settings available on some of todays phones and cameras that make things look bigger than reality! We are also happy to hear the trash compactor helped out, it’s quite amazing how much that reduces trash size down. We wish we could provide collection service for that, but once the county closed the dump location on the way to Julian, it got difficult and expensive. Plus, we do have wildlife that would love to get into some trash left behind!!
About the host
Hosted by Lori Hansen
Hello! We are Lori and Jeremy Hansen. We live about an hour away from this property with our three children who range in age from 16 through 22. When we're not busy with kids or work, we enjoy visiting the cabin for some peace and quiet and to just 'unplug' if only for a couple of days.
This property has been in Jeremy's family for almost 50 years - since the early 1970s. It's been witness to several generations of Hansen kids' visits, engagements, and honeymoons. It is a very special place to all of us.
We started renting it as a weekend vacation destination in the mid-90s but lost the original structure in the Cedar Fire of 2003 that ravaged Southern California and much of the Cuyamaca hillside.
By 2007, construction of the new and improved cabin was complete. We took some more time to furnish and decorate it just right. Once we felt it was ready to share, we resumed renting it. We are experienced hosts and we are excited to share our property with you!
Why they chose this property
Located above Lake Cuyamaca, the property offers a breath-taking view of the lake and Fletcher Island. The lake is within walking distance, where you can rent a row boat, motor boat, pedal boat; go fishing; enjoy lunch or dinner at the lake's restaurant; picnic; not to mention take one of the myriad of hiking trails and enjoy nature!
Nearby are the Laguna Mountains where, in late winter, snow is often blanketing the ground and providing you with opportunities to sled and build snowmen. The cabin sits at an elevation of 4,600ft which is often high enough for snow, as well. We have an excellent driveway for sledding, and even have sleds and snow toys available for your use!
Also nearby is the historic gold mining town of Julian where you will find more restaurants, apple pie, shopping, apple pie, local winery tasting rooms, apple pie, gold mine tours, and did I mention Julian's famous apple pies?!
What makes this property unique
We have open views and a meadow to the east, so you can experience wildlife without ever leaving the cabin. Keep an eye out for deer, wild turkey, and all varieties of birds - finch, hawk, bluejay, vulture, woodpecker, and more! In winter, the long, sloping driveway is great for sledding, and we always get more snow than Julian. Dusk or night hiking during summer, or seeing a billion stars in the sky (and the milky way) when the sun goes down are things you never forget. Even when the weather is harsh and stormy, opening up the big picture windows and seeing nature's fury coming through the mountain pass can be quite spectacular while sitting under a blanket with a fire roaring in the fireplace!
