While the exact origin of wine keys is unknown, they are assumed to have originated from gunsmiths, who derived them from gun worms, which were used to remove jammed bullets from rifles. The rise of new glass blowing technology in the 18th century led to the modern innovation of wine corks. Bottles could be constructed into its conventional, skinny shape, which has allowed winemakers to seal and age their wine.
