About this property

'Breads on Oak Bakery' Guesthouse: 1 King Bed, Private, Walk to Streetcar

Attached to the Breads on Oak plant-based bakery is this beautiful 100 year old house with part of the house is available--1 king bedroom, kitchen, laundry room and full bath with shower. The space includes a full kitchen stocked with all appliances. (Also see our modern "Bakery Studio for 1 to 2 guests, VRBO #691222). The living room of the house has been converted to Cafe seating. The bakery is open every day 7:30am-3pm for organic artisan breads, coffees, sandwiches, soups, salads & pastries! Bakery House is located on New Orleans' famous & fun (yet non-touristy) Oak Street, full of restaurants, music clubs, antique stores and clothing shops. And we're only six blocks from the streetcar line for easy access to the Historic French Quarter, Garden District, Universities, Audubon Zoo and Park, Convention Center and Superdome, and just 1 block from the paved river levee path for miles of walking, running or biking.

Bakery House is part of the bakery which gets going at 5am but guests rarely hear it, and if they do the smell of fresh baked bread make it worth it! The house is fully furnished and decorated with a cool collection of vintage and modern furniture and art.

Amenities include free WiFi and Cox cable with a tv in the bedroom.

Fantastic and Peaceful Stay in the Bakery House

I had such an incredible month at the cozy Bakery House next to Breads on Oak. I had everything I needed to make my stay comfortable, Chamain was such a joy to interact with and was incredibly responsive and hospitable, and to top it off, the sweet patio was such a plus, and the food and drinks next door were fantastic. Love the neighborhood, the restaurants and bars nearby, the access to a grocery store walking distance, and the streetcar was less than a 10 min walk from this location. This spot is such a special place and I look forward to coming back many more times in the future!

Christmas 2019

We rented the property to be close to my daughter’s family. Being within a mile was amazing as we had to coordinate moves for people ranging in age of 3 months to 88 years old. The rental was great and we all had a good time.

The stay was more than we expected . The place was a home away from home. The owners were family oriented people and made you feel that you would not b homesick. The amenities were made available to the tenants. I would highly recommend this location to my family and friends for their stay in New Irleans. Once again Charmaine Thank you foruour warm hospitality Vivian

Loved the friendly and tasty restaurants and great bakery at our doorstep. It was a good home base all the festivities surrounding a 4 -day Tulane graduation. Thanks for your hospitality!

Great Space and Location!

The Guesthouse was a wonderful spot to stay with plenty of room to spread out, spacious bathrooms, and three common areas on the ground floor. The courtyard was great to hang out in while the bakery was open and after hours with a couple of super friendly adopted stray cats. The personal door into Breads on Oak Bakery was also a treat! The folks at the bakery were awesome and we really appreciated their help.

Wonderful sweet place in the Big Easy

This is a great home, easily sleeps 5-6. Super comfortable and clean, comfortable beds, nice character and style. Being attached to an amazing bakery is a big plus!! And Chamain was a delight to work with- incredibly accommodating and helpful. Neighborhood is good with restaurants, bars and shops to walk to. Easy walk to the St Charles streetcar. For JazzFest have to uber/Lyft. Great place!!!

Comfy stay, great location

Chamain was great!! We had a couple of issues come up, and she was concerned and addressed the issues on the same day. The beds were comfortable and you can't beat the location. We were able to bake pizzas and have a fun game night.

Nice, cosy place in a convenient location.

The house was nice and clean with all the necessary comforts of home and it was set in a relatively safe neighbourhood with eating places, grocery shop and pharmacy, all within walking distance. The bakery next door is an added bonus. The location is about 20 minutes from the airport and within a 10 minute walk of the street car line. The only downside is that there is a railway crossing not too far away and one can hear the whistle of a passing train at odd hours of the day and night but you soon get adjusted to it. The hosts, Charmin and Sean, are friendly and helpful too. Would certainly stay there again.

Superb southern hospitality

The house is quite large with a quirky layout but really nice overall. There are bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs (carfeful about jumping in the shower sometimes the hot water is lacking upstairs). There was only two of us so we slept in the downstairs bedroom which is really nice. Kitchen is well stocked but the range is a kenmoore from the 1960s. My parents had the exact same one. Since we dont go on vacation to cook this was funny but not bothersome. The A/C is a godsend since temperatures are in the nineties and humidity near 100%. The house is near downtown without being in the thick of it. There are some really good resteraunts with in walking distance, try Jacq imos ( think thats how its spelt.) The bakery is vegan with some non vegan bakery products and superb coffees. We used uber/ lift which was pretty cheap. If you want you can use the street cars but they are slow, noisy quaint but if you have time they're cute. Great place to stay but the train runs 24/7 and is only about a block away, at night it can disturb light sleepers. Would stay again.

Charming, roomy, comfortable.

This was a perfect base of operations for a relaxed visit to the Big Easy. Close enough to the French Quarter when that was what you felt like doing, but substantial enough that we were perfectly happy to stay in the Oak Street corridor as an option on other days/evenings. FYI: parking in the French Quarter is steep enough that Uber is a cheaper alternative, especially if you take the street car into town.

The Bakery House at Breads on Oak is absolute perfection! A great house in an amazing neighborhood!

We were in town for our daughter's graduation from Tulane, so we had a fairly large group of 20. Six of our group stayed at the house, but it definitely became the hub of activity and the place to gather. With the spacious common areas, all 20 of us were able to commune in one place for meals or just to hang out. Having a fully functioning kitchen was invaluable, as it cut down on 20 of us storming a restaurant for every meal! The six who stayed gushed about how comfortable the rooms were and how quickly they felt at home. It was quite warm and muggy most of the week, even for New Orleans in May, but the central A/C kept us so perfectly comfortabe and gave us a sanctuary from the heat. I can't emphasise enough, how wonderful it is to stay at a place that is attached to a bakery! With both vegans and non-vegans in our group, everyone was overjoyed at the incredible selection of delicious pastries at Breads on Oak. On graduation day, there were two separate ceremonies for our daughter, one large one at the Superdome and a smaller one at the college. In between, we had Breads on Oak cater a lunch at the house and man, was that an inspired decision! They prepared a sandwich platter of a variety of their signature sandwiches that were so fresh and tasty, my mouth is watering just thinking back on it! The desert tray of amazing cookies and brownies put the finishing touches on the lunch. It was such a perfect way to keep the flow of the day going and everyone agreed, that was so much better than trying to pile 20 people into a restaurant between the two events. Again, sheer perfection. All this and the amazing extras like off street parking and a laundry room make this such a special place to house a group of weary travelers. In the vicinity of the house is the funkiest, artsy neighborhood. Oak St., itself, has plenty of coffee houses, restaurants and bars and is just a short walk to the trolley that will quickly take you to much more! Chamain is a most gracious host and made us feel a part of her family by being so attentive to making sure we had everything we needed during our stay. I would recommend this house to anyone, from just a few folks to a large group, because although only a few of your party can sleep there, it is an amazing spot to gather for meals and to plan your excursions into the different areas of the city. Five stars is, simply, not enough for this fabulous house.

Another great week at Bakery House - Breads On Oak

This is a wonderful location and layout for a family or friends vacation. Kitchen is fully stocked. The new dishwasher and refrigerator are very nice. The beds are comfortable - 2 full baths with plenty of room in each bathroom is welcome. Large screen tv, plenty of seating and space. We all have our privacy. The living areas are large enough to have us all together when we wanted to be. The added bonus is the bakery right there. The breads, baguettes, croissants and brioches are the perfect way to start a day. The highlight of the stay is the hospitality, happiness and sincerity of Chamaine & Sean. They love life, it shows and it is contagious. We will be back - again.

About the host

Hosted by Chamain O'Mahony

Host profile image
Sean & Chamain bought the building & house in December of 2011 to create a bakery for artisan breads with an attached guesthouse. Sean has been a financial systems consultant, traveling the country to universities and Fortune 100 businesses, but would rather bake bread. Chamain is an artist (paints the Creole Cat) and principal with The BOS Group, a business consulting firm, who loves healthy baking and eating vegan muffins & sweets.

Chamain was born and raised in New Orleans, graduating from Tulane in chemistry with an MBA from Emory. While in Atlanta, Chamain met Sean in an Italian Restaurant where they both worked. They married and later moved home to New Orleans while Sean received his MBA from Tulane. That was almost 20 years ago. Sean & Chamain have been married 25 years and have 2 precious Siamese cats & 2 rescue kitties at their primary home. They love traveling abroad and discovering healthy, new & exotic foods. They both enjoy exercising--Sean likes running and Chamain prefers yoga--but both loves walking on the levee right outside of Bakery House!

Why they chose this property

The bakery & guesthouse are 5 minutes from the O'Mahony home, which is right between the airport and the French Quarter--and only a block from the river for biking, running or walking the levee. Oak Street, is the coolest neighborhood in NOLA, too!

What makes this property unique

We love walking Oak Street, with all the fun antique shops, restaurants, coffeehouses, consignment shops and the streetcar line. And the river, where you can walk, bike or run the levee (no cars allowed), is only a block away!
