License to Chill! 3 Bedroom Semi-Oceanfront with Pool and Spa. 20% off Sep/Oct!
A treehouse on Hatteras Island. License to Chill takes advantage of it's unique location and lets you experience the beach from every room. The house has 3 bedrooms and is split into two sides connected by outdoor decks. The west side of the house includes main living area, kitchen, master bedroom and bath. The west side faces the beach and includes 3 sliding glass doors that open to ocean breezes. The East side of the house is connected to the west side by first and second floor decks and includes another master bedroom and bath and twin bedroom upstairs. The house was redecorated and updated in 2012 to include new bedroom furniture, couches, and flat screen T.V.s. The beach is a directly across the street and beach access is less than 100 yards away left or right. The views from the house are enhanced by double lots across the street, rather than houses, dunes and ocean are what you see. A brand new 6 person hottub was purchased in 2012 and moved onto the pool deck so you can soak under the stars. Previous guests rank the pool and large pool deck as the best amenity of the house hands down. This is your chance to experience Hatteras Island as it was meant to be, outdoor living with modern conveniences.

This cute little cottage by the beach was absolutely amazing!! My family had a great time. The property had everything needed beach access was easy and the pool and hot tub were perfect.
The owner Mike was extremely easy to work with and very responsive. The property was in a fantastic location, well stocked kitchen, plenty of linens and blankets, and very clean. Some of our vacationing ‘neighbors’ were complaining about the state of their pools, but I can say for this property it was immaculately kept. Hot tub was amazing as well. Plenty of seating and areas throughout the house to be together and apart very comfortably. Would absolutely stay at this property again.
We had an awesome stay at Licensed to Chill! The unique layout is very different than other Outer Banks homes, but once we settled in it was perfect setup.
The separate bedrooms provided privacy for everyone, while the common areas allowed us to come together comfortably.
The location was unbeatable - multiple access points to the beach and the neighborhood was friendly and quiet! The private pool and the hot tub were perfect after long days on the beach.
The check-in and communication was great and Mike was very attentive to any questions or concerns that we had.
Thanks for good memories made!
Great pool and a neat house in a fantastic, ocean view location close to beach access. Excellent, responsive owner/manager. Home is not outdated (circa 1980s) like so many of the rentals in the area, which is nice. Great, functional kitchen to cook in. These homes take a *beating* from the elements...some investment in decks, window A/C units, hot tub jets, and master bed will be necessary for this unit to keep its appeal at the current rate. Overall a great stay with a fantastic owner and we would come back!
We did experience rain during our stay which led to discovering water leaks from the rain. But it did not damper our overall experience. As far as cleansiness, not sure how much of that was owners fault as much as previous guests and cleaning service. Under the couches we found dog treats from previous guests and some pots and dishes were dirty. No big deal. I cleaned them up and made sure i left the place better than how i found it. Mike was very responsive and sent over his maintenance guy, Chris the following day. Mike also mentioned that he intends to replace the sliding doors where the l
Nice property- placement of bathrooms not convient, a lot of stairs, pool no heating or lighting, below deck outlet didn’t work- had to buy extension cord to listen to music by the pool, grill is tiny for a family of 6. Have no pets but kids tried to play volleyball in the yard and stepped in dog poop from neighbors barking dogs and our 7 year old got cactus burrs in his foot I had to get out with tweezers- honestly ocean view is misconstrued unless you want to climb on top of the house- more stairs! Overall I give it 4/5 stars- it’s Vacation! We slept, we ate, and the kids had a great time! For the price I wish the hike to beach wasn’t so bad, I wish the living room was bigger, the bathrooms were different.
This house had character and personality. In the 20+ years I have been coming to OBX, I have never rented a home so different than the cookie cutter homes you usually have to pick from. We loved the pool, listening to the ocean, ample parking, just enough space, just enough yard, quite and private. We had eight adults and 1 dog and we were very comfortable. The separate living areas make it very roomy. There are some minor repairs that look like are being taken care of. The owner was very helpful and responsive. We had a wonderful vacation. Thanks M.T.
Okay but needs maintenance and updated description
This is a lovely, quiet neighborhood with a pretty beach. The owner is very responsive. However, the house needs a lot of maintenance and attention that it is clearly not getting without onsite management. The description also needs some clarifications. There is no beach view, except in the very top crows next where it fits maybe 2 people standing and there is no place to sit and enjoy it. Beach access is about 100 feet away in either direction, but it's quite a long walk through the dunes and would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues. Description says there is a wall of doors that can be opened to enjoy the breeze, but handwritten in Sharpie is 'do not open, may not close again' on two of the three sets of doors. Fix the doors!
Regarding maintenance, the AC in the main house was broken, which was communicated to us a few days before we arrived. The temporary fix, however, did not keep the living area and upstairs master bedroom cool enough during our stay. Fortunately, the Owner comp'ed us adequately. But there are other issues. The built-in microwave doesn't work and emitted a concerning burned wire smell when we tried to us it. (Owner said he will just cut the wires so it can't be used. Fix it!) The front left eye on the stove doesn't turn down from high position, even when the knob is turned to low, which we discovered the hard way. These potential fire hazzards led us to check the smoke detectors, neither of which (both upstairs) were in working condition. Most of the hot tub jets don't work, so you don't get that bubbly hot tub feel. (Fix them!) Many of the 'upgrades' and 'fixes', even structural to the exposed ceiling beams, appear to not have been professionally done, and it shows.
There are also signs all over the house telling you what NOT to do, yet missing helpful info, like where to buy groceries. I've never experienced anything like it and I've rented a lot of vacation homes in many countries. It's just all around not in the best shape and not particularly renter friendly. It needs some investment of time and money to make it worth renting again. I'd call it bare bones. We would not rent again.
This home was perfect for my family and I. We absolutely loved having the pool! The fact that the house is separated was awesome allowing the kids there own pad. The grill and kitchen proximity made it so easy to bbq and chill. Thank you Michael for sharing your home with us. We definitely want to return!
Our small family of three (plus our dog) loved this uniquely set up home with fenced in pool and hot tub just over the sand dunes. Will absolutely book again!
Owner was very responsive, property was nicely decorated and as described. I left flamingo and unicorn floats as well as pool floating lights to enjoy!
Had a wonderful time at License to Chill. Check-in and out were smooth and easy to manage, owner was super responsive and the location was perfect size for our family of 4, including our 6 and 10 year old boys. Would highly recommend for a close-to-the-beach yet sleepy vibe for relaxation and fun.
Unfortunately, we experienced a rainy week, but the property was comfy and cozy. We completed three puzzles and watched a few movies while we relaxed and enjoyed our time together. Mike was responsive to all our needs.
We enjoyed our stay at License to Chill! The pool was our favorite feature and we were sad to say goodbye to it. The location was prime as it was only a short walk to the beach with 2 beach accesses close by. The structure of the house was unique and offered a good amount of privacy when traveling with another couple. I would definitely return in the future and I would recommend this house to others. We enjoy our OBX vacation.
First vacation at outer banks did not disappoint. So many things to do and see. Wild horses, fishing, lighthouses, memorials, etc.
House was very convenient to beach access, restaurants and stores. Perfect weather around Memorial Day.
As advertised. Right across from beach with awesome pool/hot tub setup. Would highly recommend!

We first experienced the Outer Banks when traveling for business in 2007 and quickly found ourselves returning to Hatteras Island whenever we got the chance. Hatteras Island really seemed to the perfect place to get away from it all and after traveling extensively we knew we had found a place we would always choose to go over any other.
Why they chose this property
After looking at many properties on Hatteras Island we found ourselves ranking the view and character of a place over the number of bedrooms and amenities. License to Chill provides us with a vacation feel because of it's unique character and proximity to the beach.
What makes this property unique
The third floor roof deck is great place for cocktail hour, coffee or stargazing. The pool deck is the perfect way to extend your beach day.
