About the host
Hosted by Steph Moore
Our property manager, Stephanie Calhoun and her husband of 15 years are proud to say they are now Colorado residents.
"Both of us were born and raised in California and traded in the beaches for the mountains of Colorado which were calling us. The decision to move to Pagosa Springs was the best thing we could have done for once we were settled in were presented with the opportunity to manage a historic house right in the middle of the amazing hot springs and wonderful town. As the property manager, I aim to give each and every guest the experience they deserve."
Why they chose this property
The owners Martha and Matt fell in love with the property for what it is and not what it looks like. The house is just chock full of fun history. The first structure, whatever it was, was constructed in 1849, 34 years before the town of Pagosa Springs was incorporated. The property was used as a barracks before the Ft Lewis military outpost was moved to Durango to protect the silver mines in 1882, the home of a retired Texas Ranger James L. O'Neal from 1896-1915, and in most recent times Herman Willett 1951-1997 and his son and long time resident of Pagosa Springs, Billy Willett who is source of the afore mentioned history. Remodels have produced a 1878 Springfield rifle in the wall of the chicken coup and a tobacco pouch that contained small gold nuggets still embedded in rock from the wall of the coal bin. We also loved the hands-on hospitality that Chris and Anna Dennis had provided, prior to our ownership, and felt it was just exactly the kind of place we wanted to be involved in. Anna no longer manages the property as of 2016 and we thank her for her wonderful efforts. We have been fortunate to find Stephanie Calhoun and her husband to pick up where Anna left off.
What makes this property unique
This home could not be more conveniently located for those who want to be in the heart of it all, soaking in the downtown Pagosa experience during the day. From great restaurants, to lively bars, to snow skiing, to fishing, to cool weather and gorgeous vistas, a two block walk for dip in the hot springs or river, to a great game of Bingo right across the street during the summer months. Pagosa and Historic 408 Lewis Street have much to offer. Really a great place to visit!
