About this property

Bliss Place - On the Wild & Scenic Smith River

Thirty minutes from Crescent City, this charming, hand-built, off-the-grid cabin on the South Fork of the Smith River is the perfect blend of funky/rustic and cozy/comfy. In the winter, curl up in a rocking chair and enjoy a roaring fire in the cast iron woodstove. In the summer, open up the windows and let the forest breezes refresh you. Three large bedrooms sleeps up to 7 comfortably. The master bedroom upstairs opens onto an enormous deck perfect for yoga or enjoying your morning coffee while planning your days on the river or coast. Cook up the fresh fish you catch on the world-class Smith River or buy from the fishing boats in the Crescent City harbor in the well-appointed kitchen complete with gas range. Enjoy your meals on the wrap-around deck, under the shade of the dogwood tree. Help yourself to apples, Asian pears and figs from our home orchard in season. Spend your evenings outside listening to the river around the fire circle, or watching a DVD from our eclectic video library.

A short trail thru the woods takes you down to the River, where you can spend the day reading a book borrowed from our extensive in-house library, or kayaking, rafting or swimming in the cool waters of the river or sunning on the flat, warm boulders at the water’s edge.

Adjacent to the National Forest, our cabin is in the heart of the Six Rivers National Recreation Area; a hiker’s Paradise. The historic Kelsey Trail is literally steps away. This recently rediscovered trail was the original route from Fort Jones to Crescent City, and has just been rebuilt with the help of the California Conservation Corps. The southern trailhead is a 5-minute walk from the cabin, and hikers can walk upriver up to 8 miles along the trail as it follows the South Fork and beyond. Or just go far enough to take advantage of some of the emerald green swimming holes less than a mile away.

We don’t have satellite or cable television, cell phone service or wireless internet access, AND WE LIKE IT THAT WAY! We invite you to unplug, unwind, put the screens away, and experience the truly interactive worldwide web of life. See Nature: the original 3D…Cell phone service is available from a number of spots along South Fork road and Highway 199, and Crescent City has all the modern conveniences, including internet coffee shops.

If you appreciate solitude, privacy, wildlife, birdsong, and the music of the river that runs through it, we look forward to sharing our “Bliss Place” with you.

We live in the Sacramento and both work in environmental careers where we can exercise our shared passion of saving the planet. Spending time here on the Smith River is a way for us to recharge our souls and reconnect with the natural world we cherish. We call this cabin our 'Bliss Place' in honor of our beloved friend, mentor and poet-jester Peter Douglas, who followed his bliss all the way to the South Fork, and then brought us along for the ride. We hope it inspires you to protect something you love.
