About this property
The Appleton Retreat - Newly constructed 3 Bedroom barn....house Mid-Coast Maine
Peter & Toby, who manage The Appleton Retreat, have over 2,100 five-star reviews on another travel platform,,,,,
The Red Barn may appear to be a renovated barn but it is actually a totally new contemporary structure that is based on the design style of a monitor barn - which aimed to maximize space and improve the living conditions for animals housed inside the barn, or in this case people. The architecture incorporates a raised center aisle with clerestory windows, allowing for excellent air circulation and natural light. Located at The Appleton Retreat the Red Barn has a spectacular view of Appleton Ridge.
There are 3 bedrooms: Two on the 1st floor and one on the ground floor.
The Master bedroom suite on the 1st floor features a King size bed, AC, black out blinds & TV. There are two large closets. The Bathroom has a bathtub, shower and toilet with bidet.
Please note: When a Guest booking is for two people it is assumed they are a couple and require one bedroom - the Master bedroom suite is booked - the other two bedrooms are locked. Guests must state 3 guests to have the Guest bedroom available which will incur an additional charge. (If the 3rd bedroom is required please contact the host.)
The Guest bedroom suite on the 1st floor features a Queen size bed, AC, & black out blinds. There are two large closets and a full bathroom.
The third bedroom on the ground floor features a Queen size bed. A full bathroom is just down the hall.
All the floors incorporate radiant heating.
The large deck on the 1st floor looks out at the Appleton Ridge and is a great place to grill. Enjoy viewing the starry nights in the 4-person hot tub ....... maybe with a fire in the firepit.
The Appleton Retreat encompasses 120 acres hosting six other unique retreats. To the south is the Pettengill Stream, a resource protected area. (There are two kayaks for Guest use at the Pettengill Stream.) To the north is the Nature Conservancy's 1300 acre reserve.
The trails on the 120 acres at The Appleton Retreat as well as the trail on the 1300 acres on the abutting Nature Conservancy are available to Guests for hiking and cross country skiing. We do not permit snowmobiles or all terrain vehicles at The Appleton Retreat.
In addition to your own private hot tub - The sauna and wood fired cedar hot tub, located on the property, may be reserved, at an additional charge. (It is NOT shared.)
For longer stays guests may take advantage of the washer & dryer located on the ground floor - No Charge
EV level II charging is located in the garage and by permission only.

About the host
Hosted by Peter DeWalt
Toby and Peter, are Super Hosts with over 2,300 5-star reviews, they look forward to hosting you at The Appleton Retreat. (Check out their guest reviews by searching The Appleton Retreat.)
Peter and Toby thought they were retired. The couple sailed their boat WHIZZBANG from Maine to New Zealand and while there traveled around North and South Island, staying at several memorable vacation rentals. A great adventure for sure and the seed of thought was planted to create their own vacation rental to host.
After returning to the States they relocated from Massachusetts to Portland Maine to be closer to their kids and live in a thriving, diversified city. They renovated a very cool historic building at 141 Spring Street planning to live in the Studio apartment. However, it wasn’t long before the two realized they needed a “MISSION”. So, call it crazy, they purchased a contemporary log home, located on 120 acres of land in the tiny town of Appleton, and got to work.
As The Appleton Retreat began to consume most of the couple’s time and energy excursions to Portland became less and less frequent. It was a difficult decision to part with the building in Portland, that they had worked so hard to restore, but it was time. Toby and Peter welcome you to head down east to the mid-coast for a getaway at The Appleton Retreat. You may now choose which of the 7-unique retreats suits you best to enjoy a memorable, relaxing time away from the outside world.(All retreats are named after brands of apples, if you hadn’t guessed!)
