Highly recommend this place. Hosts are the best. Overall view and cottage are superb.

This property is perfect. Exactly as presented. Superb view of the village and fruit trees on the yard. Wonderful deck outside for dining or just taking in the surrounding. Listen to the birds or church bells and enjoy a glass of wine. The hosts are very responsive and helpful in every way. Highly recommend this place to release your stress. Small grocer in the village but you have to drive to another town to find a restaurant.

Magical...

Wow… where to begin. My two sisters, my daughter and I scheduled 2 nights stay at the lovely rose-covered cottage on our first trip to Hungary in September. Our choice was random… the cottage was in the area we wanted to visit and it looked lovely. I truly think fate had something to do with it… We fell so in love after those 2 days that we cancelled our plans for the next 2 days and remained in Kapolcs Village and at ‘our’ gorgeous cottage. The cottage is a beautifully renovated stone cottage in a picture perfect setting, decorated tastefully and comfortably in order to make your stay a welcoming and delightful experience. Linda and Laszlo were so wonderful, helping us with dining options, where to shop for groceries and filling us in on many Hungarian history lessons! The patio area was perfect for morning breakfasts, evening wine and late night discussions! Linda and Laszlo were the perfect hosts and while we are a precocious group and welcomed them into our family, I also felt that they were extremely respectful of our privacy and had we preferred ‘alone’ time, they would have completely respected and honored that. In addition to the fact that the cottage and hosts were amazing, there are many things to see and do in the area! We day-tripped to Heviz Spa, Sumeg Castle, Szigligeti Castle and the monastery on Lake Balaton in Tihany. Had we not been so comfortable at our cottage, we would surely have seen more but the desire to enjoy the scenery and beautiful weather kept us close to ‘home’. Linda is a complete darling and helped us (in about 2 minutes!) figure out why our cell phones were having issues. Laszlo was a font of information concerning what we should take the time to see in the area and we left feeling like we had made a real connection with Hungary and its history. I truly cannot express how lovely our time at the cottage was!! I’ve never been so far from home and felt so ‘at home’… The only issue that we had in our four days was leaving and saying goodbye. That and not having a day of adventure with Linda! Köszönöm, Linda and Laszlo and give Maximus a hug for us!!! Until we meet again!

Thank you for your kind words and with such enthusiasm. What a wonderful time it was for us as well....we are often amused that we have such a good time with our guests, like good friends, and then get compensated for it! WOW Hungary is like a really extraordinary secret recipe, full of so many delights, unique and complicated and eager to share the secret! Come....you will be enchanted.

Magical place

A beautiful little cottage loaded with vines in the stunning countryside of Kopolcs. Everything you need for an enjoyable stay is there in the cottage which is close to amazing towns, one nicer than another. Veszprém is absolutely beautiful as is Sümeg castle, we stayed for 1 week but could have stayed longer. The weather in September is amazing. Thanks to our wonderful hosts Latszo & Linda who were extremely hospitable, bringing us goodies from their garden. I can’t forget Gaby who was there always when we needed her with her amazing knowledge of Hungary. We will be back!!

Cosy cottage

We spent two weeks at the cottage and did enjoy our stay very much. We particularly liked the location in the picturesque village Kapolcs. The cottage is clean, has a good size for two people and is equipped with marvellous antique furnitures. The breakfast we enjoyed in the wonderful big garden. We also found very useful that there is a washing machine. The owner was always very nice and helpful. All in all we had a wonderful holiday!!

A Family getaway- relaxing green countryside escape from our urban bustlling life

An Easter weekend for the family of four, we turned off the electronics and enjoyed each other, explored artisanal farmer's markets, and experianced Easter in a hand painted chapel with glorious songs! The church chorus in Kapolcs was a wonderful discovery.... The underwater lake in nearby Tapolca was a memorable and mysterious place for learning for my awed children. We will escape again to this cottage...only 2.5 hours from Budapest. Oh the neighbors dog was a welcome treat too, for my pet starved children.

Landidylle pur

Herzlichst Frank & Ilse Umbreit

We think the stone cottage must have hosted many happy people in its romantic history - as it continues to charm today. Years ago we found it roofless and abandoned, just a whisper of its former self, with one huge wall proudly standing - rumored to be part of a former hilltop monastery. We were possessed and did not hesitate, this must be restored... Today this little ruin is now one of many in Kapolcs village being lovingly restored and renovated, and voices again ring in happiness to occupy them. Thank you to all our guests that continue the tradition. Join us!

Lovely cottage and landlords.

Lovely cottage with beautiful garden in the quiet village of Kapolcs at 25 min from lake Balaton. Good bed and thanks to the thick stone walls the house stays cool during hot summer days. Landlord provided us with tips on what to do and where to eat on a daily basis . They were kind very approachable and helpful. Highly recommended.

Thank you for the kind review. Yes - you too discovered that Lake Balaton is a world-class location for a summer holiday, and a popular and busy-busy place! A stay in a Kapolcs village cottage (on a old Roman road) offers easy access to Balaton and then one can return to the peace and quiet in this gorgeous Northern Balaton Village. This is one of the many reasons we acquired a summer home in Kapolcs Village. The best of both! Come and see for yourself, the cottage is waiting!

The most lovely place we've ever have been!

We came as a Family from Germany, Berlin, to the Kapolcs Village Cottage and found a place that was more lovely than we've dreamed about. The house, the garden, the village, the nature gave us the best athmosphere to relax from the big city. The owners were from the very first moment like realy good friends. We had a great time there and it was hard to say good bye. We would like to come back as soon as possible! Thank you Linda and Laszlo!

Lovely, quaint and charming cottage

We know that every summer there Is the "Valley of Arts" festival which takes place in the village. We wanted to be in the heart of the festival but also wanted a place to retreat to when we wanted peace. The cottage is wonderful with everthing that you would want for a country retreat. The views from the cottage are lovely and it has gardens, cellar and terrace for eating and sunbathing. It is 1/2 hour drive to Lake Balaton (Hungarian Sea) and 1/2 hour drive to the Picturesque county town of Veszprem. The owners are lovely people and are very approachable.
Response from VrboOwner on 24 Mar, 2020
We are glad that you enjoyed your stay, and pleased that you came especially for the annual Valley of the Arts festival. Such a unique festival, the village's gardens, schools, mills, old estates, churches and town halls are the venue. Kapolcs is transformed from a sleepy village to an art and music and food extravaganza for ten days. Next year is the 25th anniversary....promises to be really an international event! Please come again!

A perfect getaway!

A hidden gem in the Hungarian countryside. Enjoyed the view, privacy of the cottage & well kept garden with rose bushes. The kitchen was very well equipped. Enjoyed hiking & cycling trips (bicycles in very good condition) in the neighbouring villages. Linda & Laszlo are great hosts and were an invaluable source of information concerning life in the village of Kapolcs as well as in Hungary in general . Two weeks there went by too fast - need to revisit some day! Jaana & Jarmo from Finland Loistava lomapaikka rauhallisella Unkarin maaseudulla Balatonin pohjoispuolella. Mökki on hyvin varusteltu, pihapiiri kokonaan omassa käytössä.

Thank you to our Finnish friends for the great review - it raises an interesting question for home owners, (especially if the rental property is close) as to how much or how little interaction there will be with guests.... Some guests seek privacy and they want to be completely independent. Some want a total immersion into the local customs and culture, and especially seek our company and assistance. We of course look to our guests to set the relationship they want. We as retired re-repatriates and ex-expatriates, feel lucky to live in Hungary, and it is a joy for us to meet so many world-travellers wishing to get to know Hungarians and Hungary. We do have a unique insiders view, with an understanding of the outsider's perspective. But perhaps it is Hungarians unkind preference for their own unique language. Whatever the magic is, we are glad to continue being there if needed...

Always happy to go back to Kapolcs

This was the second time we stayed here and we had a lovely experience once again. Linda and Lászlo offered to take us to the celebrations on the 1st of May in the village (the villagers were decorating their "May tree") and we had a chance to eat and drink with everyone gathered at the village centre and go for a walk around the village. Really nice! But the hosts also gave us space to wander on our own on the next days and to relax and they provided us with very nice tips on where to go, eat and drink. When the weather turned rainy, they kindly left us a basket full of DVDs to watch at "home". Very nice cottage, lovely village and surroundings and welcoming hosts. We would like to be back again.

We are always pleased when a guest notices so much wonder around them...thank you for the kind comments.... In addition to the adorable feral cats that wander in and out of our lives all summer, we were delighted this winter when a beautiful male peacock came to the garden to feast on the ivy berries on the cottage wall. Perhaps he will stay for our future guests....

Tolle Gegend, liebenswerte Vermieter

Sehr sauber, sehr freundlich, sehr gut gelegen.

Nice house, friendly hosts in beautifull part of HU

The house is very nice and quiet, overlooking the village. It has a very nice garden, perfect for relaxing or having breakfast on the sun. Linda and Lászlo were extremely nice, welcoming us to the house and making sure our stay was perfect (eg. the bicycle had a flat tire that Laszlo quickly fixed it). They also had very nice tips for walks in the woods and vineyards, restaurants and other places to visit. We would strongly recommend this house and may well go back there in the future.

Just what we needed!!!!!

This property is perfect for getting away from it all!!! Me and my husband spent a week here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The pictures on the website do not do this cottage the justice it deserves. We were overjoyed when we arrived as it was so much better than we had anticipated. The cottage was clean and spacious and Linda and Laszlo were so welcoming and knowledgeable. You definitely need a car if you are wanting to explore the area and unfortunately the restaurant down the road was closed during our stay due to refurbishments so unfortunately we had to cook every night but the cottage is so well equipped we didn't want for anything utensil wise. We would definitely go back to this cottage for a break as it is so peaceful and ideal for anyone wanting to relax and get away from it all! We are so glad we came across this property and we really hope that other people are able to do the same.

R&R Away from the City

My wife, baby, and I traveled to Budapest for a two week stay. We wanted some rest and relaxation away from the city and found it here at the hillside cottage in Kapolcs Village. The accommodations were great, complete with standalone house, parking, and yard for our little one to run around in. Our hosts even supplied a crib so we didn't need to bring ours from California. We highly recommend this location for some peace and quite, access to the lake, and enjoying the Arts.

Wonderful for holiday / Wunderbares Urlaubsziel

------- We came on Saturday afternoon. Linda and Lazlo already expected us and were very helpful from beginning till the end. The house is very nice and comfortable. Linda and Lazlo had many ideas and were always helpful and available. Defects in the house were repaired immediately again. One simply wishes such landlords. The house lies in a very small village. A car is required. Within 30 minutes one is in different bigger towns. Otherwise the location is very beautiful and quiet. On a mountain, in the middle of the rest. The house, as well as Hungary are recommended without limitation. Many thanks for the 2 great weeks.

Easter in Hungary with baby

We arrived late on Good Friday to this beautiful peaceful farming village of Kapolcs with only the sounds of nature to be heard as the locals were attending the easter ceremonies in the beautiful churches located on hill tops everywhere in the area. From the local Saturday morning market we got fresh bread, butter and eggs; very special! The location of the Kondor cottage introduces us to areas which we probably would have missed out on had we stayd in one of the many resorts on the lake. The apartment was beautiful and equiped for the weather which had just started showing signs of spring arriving - beautiful flowers. Birds singing and the tune of the daily delivery of fresh produce to the village are sounds which we shall remember forever. We love Hungary!
Response from VrboOwner on 24 Mar, 2020
We are glad that you found Hungary so lovely at this time, it is a bit of an insider's secret that spring is so astonishingly and colourfully beautiful. Every village is awash with Lilacs, Forsythia and an army of tulips and Irises in every colour. The fields are wide swatches of yellow or red, the Acacia trees are in bloom and the hills are buzzing with bees, brought in by their keepers to collect that sweet acacia honey..... When mother nature wakes up in Hungary...It is really lovely. Thank you for reminding us of this...

Splendid Cottage in Rural Northern Balaton area

We've just had an excellent holiday in the northern Balaton area. Linda and Lazlo's cottage provided an excellent base, well equipped, the thick walls ensured it was nice and cool inside on the hotter days. There is a nice eating out area and large garden. As stated in the listing a car is required, there are many places to explore in under half and hour's drive, a week wasn't really enough. We had a wander around the village most evenings learning to greet the locals with a "Jo Estet" our attempt at Hungarian for "good evening". Thanks to Linda and Laszlo who respected our privacy but were there next door if we needed anything. All in all recommeded.

Kapolcs Cottage Country Estate of former Chicagoans.

Once, we would have been entertained by the idea that the very urban Linda and László Kondor would be living in Kapolcs Cottage, a countryside estate in Hungary. We had lived, loved and worked for decades in Chicago Illinois, but late 1997 found us doing exactly that and walking away from all we owned and settling permanently overseas - one house at a time.

It seems my husband and I are a bit nomadic and share a restless twinge to experience a lifestyle shakeup - every ten years or so. After a decade of happily living in a Bauhaus penthouse in the exquisite city of Budapest, a romantic getaway to Hungary’s Northern Balaton Region turned out to be the next chapter of our rather artistic, eclectic, lives. Summer of 2007 found us on-the-move again. László, my Hungarian-born-American husband, former photographer to Chicago’s late Mayor Richard J. Daley, intuitively found his way home to the Hungarian countryside, and after a resurrection of a shattered country house, settled in with wife & dogs to manage a holiday cottage.

Why they chose this property

Discovering this 200 year farmhouse & even older stone cottage on a vineyard estate, rumoured to be built on the former site of a medieval monastery, stole our romantic hearts. We fell completely in love. On the spot we decided to leave the bustling city and move into an environment where the beauty of nature is all around. We bought the ruin of a property, with approx. 2 1/2 acres / 3,800 Sm of overgrown weed-chocked garden. It took a lot of exhausting coming and going and we certainly had moments when we questioned our sanity, but there was no going back as we were completely seduced by to the exhilarating views. The cottage sits on a summit that overlooks the red-tiled roofs of Kapolcs Village. The village itself lies in a green valley on the edge of the Upper Balaton Region National Park, a nature preserve. This beautiful region is rightly called - the Hungarian Tuscany.

What makes this property unique

The joy (and simultaneous terror) on approaching such a restoration project - mixing the past and present - creating a modern home and holiday guest cottage in such a beautiful setting, was intimidating. Years before we had bought a design book, a sort of dream book that became our visual inspiration. Designer Tricia Guild’s gorgeously restored Italian Tuscan farmhouse is showcased in her book, COUNTRY COLOR. A must-see for anyone considering what can be done in restoring a country house. We practically slept with this book! We went to our first meeting with Erika Pécsi, our local genius designer with book in hand, and were delighted when she came up with her own copy.
