About this property

Raphaël at our 'Clos Lussault' near Amboise in the Loire Valley

Here you are reading about our 'Raphaël', a part-traditional, part-troglodyte 130m² jewel that can sleep up to six. There is the ground-level bedroom with ensuite bathroom, then a fairytale circular stair tower takes you up to the main living spaces. There you have the living room, dining room and kitchen in the majestic cave spaces, plus a veranda and small private patio. The second bedroom and separate bathroom are in the non-cave part of the house, as is the sleeping loft, which is accessed by a ladder.

The kitchen has a full size refrigerator and freezer, four burner electric stove top, electric oven, dishwasher and small appliances. There is a bathtub in the downstairs bathroom and a shower in the upstairs bathroom. There is a clothes washer and dryer in the laundry room. There is a large screen TV with internet and Netflix. You have a barbecue on the patio.

There is a 'secret passage' that leads to the Donatello gîte if you are taking the two together. Parking, shared by our vacation rentals, is right across the road, as is a delightful shared small garden with a little pond, and a path down to our other enclosed garden. The parking offers one space per gite, but if you arrive with more than one car there is also free public parking at the foot of the street.

Frankly, I never thought I'd end up living here but - you see, I met a man. On a ski trip - Alps - chalet - fireplace - well, it's been over twenty years. I can't give you the complete insider's guide to France yet, (I believe that takes three generations) but I can give you an ex-New Yorker's guide to this fabulous Valley of Kings. We'd started in Paris, of course - our first studio was my husbands - that's where we lived once we decided to share a continent. We were there until our son was about negative-one-month old, and we didn't want to have to convert the bidet into a bassinet. Once we moved, I started renting out that apartment and everything fell into place. As an architect, I loved fixing up the apartments, and as an ex-pat, I loved meeting the people who come to enjoy their vacations here.

Now, we’ve made the move out to the Loire Valley. We've renovated two glorious properties, creating several fabulous vacation homes, you’ve got to see the pictures. The locations are perfect for exploring the region – it has so much to offer! Castles, vineyards, hiking, canoeing, bicycle riding - I never get tired of the walk from the Clos Lussault along the Loire River to Amboise. I can't give you the complete insider's guide to this fabulous region yet (I believe that takes minimally three generations) but I can give you an ex-New Yorker's guide to our adoptive Valley of the Kings.

Why they chose this property

If you are looking to spend some time in the Loire Valley, this location is perfect – Amboise is about five kilometers in one direction, Montlouis is about 6 kilometers in the other direction. In Amboise, you have the royal castle and Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s residence, which houses many of his experiments, designs and paintings. The Loire River is just down the road, there are beautiful hikes and trails, we are right on the principle bicycle route of the Loire Valley, there are canoe rentals on the Ile d'Or and hot air balloon excursions. You are close to a plethora of castles, in the heart of the wine region and a half-hour drive to Tours, to Beauval Zoo and many other parks and places of interest.

What makes this property unique

Our 'Clos Lussault" runs along the rue du Village in the small hamlet of Lussult-sur-Loire, about 5 kilometers from Amboise, 6 kilometers from Montlouis and 23 kilometers from Tours. It has three traditional houses with caves, plus an entirely troglodytic vacation rental home, three courtyards, a garden and private parking. The vacation rental houses are connected by a series of caves which we have renovated. They had previously been used in winemaking and as a museum of viticulture, we have preserved all of the wine presses and fascinating materials left from that era. The entire ambiance creates an extraordinary, unique experience.
