I live in DC with my wife, Ujjwala, and our fluffy sidekick Reine, a 5-year-old Chow Chow with a big personality. Outside of my role as a software engineering leader, I volunteer at our local dog park and enjoy curating elevated guest experiences as host of The Ascent.

Why they chose this property

We discovered Basye in December 2023, and it was love at first sight. We instantly fell in love with how accessible it is from Washington D.C., just a two-hour drive away, yet it feels like a complete escape from city life. Even the drive itself feels like a reset.

What drew us in was the unique mix of adventure, nature, and small-town charm. We love spending time at Bryce Resort for its year-round activities, enjoying summer days at Lake Laura, exploring endless hiking trails, and discovering local breweries and wineries throughout the region.

Most of all, we fell in love with the opportunity to find the perfect lot and build our own interpretation of a modern mountain chalet completely from the ground up — a space designed to bring together elevated design, comfort, and the beauty of the Shenandoah mountains.

What makes this property unique

What makes The Ascent unique is that it was intentionally designed from the ground up to feel less like a rental and more like a modern mountain experience. Every detail, from the architecture and interiors to the guest flow and amenities, was created to blend elevated design with warmth, comfort, and connection to nature.

Unlike many traditional cabins in the area, The Ascent brings a more contemporary, design-forward approach to the mountains while still feeling cozy and welcoming. Large windows, natural textures, curated lighting, and indoor-outdoor spaces were all designed to make guests feel immersed in the landscape year-round.

We also wanted the experience to feel memorable beyond just the stay itself. Whether it’s slow mornings with coffee overlooking the trees, evenings around the firepit, relaxing in the hot tub after skiing, or gathering with friends and family in thoughtfully designed common spaces, the property was built to encourage meaningful moments together.
