Located within a short 3 minute walk to our local lake, the featured house is located on a short, quiet, up hill cul-de-sac, where we're surrounded by mature evergreen trees that even grow through our huge wraparound deck, which can be the perfect place to relax with your morning coffee, a place in the fresh air to start your day, an evening destination for a cocktail or two, or a stop over on your way to luxuriate in the 4 - 6 person hot tub on the lower deck.
After your day is finally done, retire to your private comfortably appointed luxurious bedrooms (with European Style featherbed mattresses or Tempurpedic foundations. 560 - 680 thread count sheets with down like and down alternative memory pillows that will cradle you for the ultimate in a good night's rest.

All bedrooms have ceiling fans and cozy electric baseboard heating, perfect for those of you that like to sleep with your windows open.
The master bedroom comes with one of the two gas fireplaces so you don't have haul firewood to create a 'spark'.
Our lake has a upgraded multi-million dollar boat concreted launch ramp, which will be perfect to put in your ski boat, sailboat, or fishing boat. As it's a drinking water reservoir, jet skis and sea-doos are not allowed. Calif. State Mussel inspection in force.
The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper has described our lake (which is called Scott's Flat Reservoir), as one of the Sierra Nevada's best kept secrets.
At approximately 760 acres, the lake is roughly 3 1/2 X 1 mile long with up to 7 miles of shoreline. It is actually large enough that a resident fleet of sailboats can dot the water's surface during the sailing season. Most mornings, the lake's water is like glass.....
Wildlife and solitude abound here. Bald eagles, ospreys, geese, deer and coyotes are residents here along with the occasional bear, mountain lion, bobcat and fox. Watch where you step!
A local community store is within easy walking distance (perfect for the morning or an after dinner stroll). Downtown Nevada City is approximately 10 - 12 minutes away by car.
Most days and nights (with the exception of the boating season), there can be little to no noise except the wind in the trees. It's hard to describe that to those that live in a world of 'white noise'.
Come, we invite you and your family friends, co-workers or that someone special to escape to our retreat from the real world. It truly can be a retreat to relax, refresh and recharge your body and your inner spirit.
Whether your life is full, or you're now looking for something off the beaten path, we look forward to providing you an fulfilling experience very few people may ever be able to have, where ever you hail from. Our retreat is as nice as Lake Tahoe, but closer to where you may come from, and without the noise, the traffic and the crowds.

Thanks for your nice review. Nice that you were able to have some family and friends share our little Camp Run A Muck.
Thank you also for finding us in NC
Cheers,
Caroline and Craig
We found this gem while searching for a house near a campsite our family was staying. My mom is elderly & I have a bad back so camping wasn’t an option. The house is beautiful with many special touches & the comforts of home. The host was responsive & very hospitable, making sure all questions were answered & that our stay was comfortable. I loved the notes left for us to navigate through the area and the house. We really enjoyed our stay. The kids also had a blast.

Thanks for the great review of your recent stay with us, Colin. We hope that you found everything to your expectations and are glad that the summer weather co-operated with the time you spent at our Camp Run A Muck.
It was great that everyone in your party enjoyed the lake and your time on the Yuba River and that you all can look back and remember what a great getaway the Sierra Nevada foothills can do for ones' mindset when returning to your regular routine in your normal world.
Thanks for choosing us for your get together with the boys.

Michael and his family and friends stayed with us for the last week of June in 2019.
We are so pleased that they truly enjoyed our "home in the trees" in Nevada City during their time with us.
The weather was absolutely perfect and our neighborhood lake was completely full, almost guaranteeing a perfect week for our guests with their own boat to bring such as Michael's family.
We would welcome Michael and his group back anytime and we are so glad that they chose us for their vacation getaway, hopefully with memories to last their lifetimes.
Cheers,
Caroline and Craig
Very cute cabin, so close to the lake. Kids loved the movies and game room, plenty of firewood to keep us all cozy. Small kitchen but incredibly well stocked and very functional. Very kind hosts. Comfortable bed and TV set up in each room. Overall lovely place to stay.

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness
the dark windows were depressing and the throws on the furniture were insulting. the worst was the swamp gasses coming up from both toilets and the underpants left in the dresser.

Response from VrboOwner on 12 Sept, 2025
Sorry your stay with us was less than perfect.
Your feedback about the dark windows was concerning as we have a 2 story house and the removeable window tint could have easily been removed by you to allow more sunlight in. We installed the removeable tint to help cool the house during the height of summer. The tint was strategically placed on some but not all of the windows and doors facing the afternoon sun. There is plenty of non-depressive wide-open windows in the other 3 bedrooms, the 2 bathrooms, the kitchen and the living room that flood the house with natural outdoor light. A phone call or msg to us would have mitigated your depressive state.
The sewer gases you experienced and complained about were and still are NON-EXISTANT, and the toilets (2) are in perfect working order with myself and our cleaners were unable to sense anything related to your complaint.
Our furniture pieces in the house are covered by white fabric slipcovers (since COVID) and installed to protect our guests and laundered and re-installed after each rental. They are far from hideous.
Believe you should have asked your family for input on your review as it looks like everyone (besides you) had a great time, (video games were used, DVD movies were watched, multiple beach towels ended up being washed (after your departure) and the hot tub was used successfully (with no complaint from you) .
A bottle of wine, multiple imported beers and a ! /2 case of assorted sodas and drinks that we left for you, were completely consumed by your group.
You even asked for an early check-in which we allowed.
It's too bad that you didn't check in earlier than you did (approximately 4:45 PM instead of the 3:30 PM (you requested) and probably spent at least 2 hours sitting in Friday get away traffic (from the Bay Area) with bumper-to-bumper traffic.
We find it extremely odd that you had nothing positive to say about your stay with us - only complaints. We also find it concerning that at no time during your stay you called or msged us with any complaints or concerns (as specifically noted in our rental agreement to report to us that you agreed to) as we might have come to a solution remotely.
We have had multiple groups of guests before your stay, (and a few after your group) that did not find any issues with our home that you did.
We have had our property listed on this platform since 2013 and have NEVER encountered any complaints such as yours.
We absolutely loved our stay at Camp Run-A-Muck. We came to celebrate a wedding that was nearby. It was the perfect home base. Comfy beds, lots of amenities, and very responsive and helpful owners!

We loved everything! The house is stocked with everything you need. The location was absolutely serene--exactly what we all needed. Scott's Lake is gorgeous, but the secret watering hole was the best! We are already talking about coming again next year. Can't wait to come back!

Great house for City getaway
This house was more than we expected, hot tub, right by the lake, comfortable, cosy, with great attention to detail and the comfort of guests. The location is excellent for any time of the year. Craig was generous and accomodating and even returned some items we had left behind at no cost to us. We hope to return.

Dear Eithne,
Thank you for your most generous review of our Camp Run A Muck in the beautiful Sierra Nevada's. Our main goal as a VRBO property is to open our house to families such as yours from the Bay Area and let other folks enjoy the property and all that the Nevada City area offers.
I am truly pleased that you enjoyed the house and the way that we have set it up to be as comfortable and relaxing as you found it to be during your stay.
We know that your vacation days and anytime that you can be with your family and friends is truly precious and we are grateful that you chose our "little slice of heaven" in The Northern California Gold Rush region.
We look forward to your next visit and hope it will be one of many.
Cheers,
Craig

We really enjoyed our stay and were greeted by wonderful Christmas decor in the home! What a treat to have a bottle of wine and See's candies waiting for us.
The owners were very thoughtful of every detail and even with rain predicted for most of our stay they proved extra umbrellas! We would love to come back during the summer to enjoy the lake!

We hope that they had a great time and made lots of memories at Camp Run A Muck, as the weather was perfect and our lake was completely full.
We recommend them higihly to other hosts.
This is our second time staying at this house. It’s a very short walk down to the lake. The house is in a beautiful spot with mature trees all around it. It is off the main road so it is quiet. Caroline and Craig are very responsive and easy to deal with. We would definitely rent again.

This property was perfect for 4 adults and three toddlers. We have a pontoon boat; it was very easy to park and only a block from the launch ramp. Scott's Valley is a great lake, lots of places to pull the boat to the shore and watch the kids play.
Good communication with the manager and everything was well labeled, plentry of dishes and the pantry well stocked.

Hiya Shirley and Jim,
We are so glad that our home worked out well for you and your family during your recent stay with us in May of 2021.
Our lake is so big that it offers any of our guests a perfect way to enjoy themselves, whether they are just wanting to get their toes wet, or to take the time to bring their own boat with them and cruise to an attractive secluded cove to find a “special spot” to enjoy with their family.
Thank you for finding us, and many thanks for your kind words.
Cheers,
Caroline and Craig
Rented this beautiful home for a local outdoor wedding at a nearby venue. Coming together amongst friends and family, our group was able to spend quality time, cook meals, lounge, relax together all on the property. The hot tub was a beautiful luxury amenity given the stay being in a winter month; the neighborhood is tranquil, peaceful, and respectful. I highly recommend a stay at Craig/Caroline’s home. They are amazing hosts and have an amazing cottage home.

We enjoyed our family getaway to Nevada City. Craig was a great host. The was a fire going in the wood stove when we arrived, and stocked wood for the rest of our stay. Cozy home, easy to relax. Really comfy beds.
Cute town with many restaurants. We would hike during the day, get great take out and play games at night.

We are very pleased that you enjoyed our home for your vacation get away. We are so pleased that our going the extra mile (even setting a fire in our amazing woodstove, so the house was cozy to start your stay with us) made your stay with us possibly a little more special.
Nevada City has always been trendy and welcoming (even now so in the age of COVID) and prefect for that morning or evening stroll (Victorian Christmas and 4th of July are really special in "our little tourist town".
Thanks for choosing us for your getaway.

About the host
Hosted by Caroline and Craig
Caroline and Craig still reside in the San Francisco area and devote time to our stunning Nevada City home and our other vacation rentals throughout Northern California.
We've designed and set up this property to be a home away from home for our family and guests to experience all the luxury and details that we know everyone will enjoy.
We have been associated with the hotel and guest client industries and know how to please people. We have been fortunate to extensively travel the world for the last 30 years and have stayed in many upscale hotels and other traveler's accommodations. This has made us realize the little touches and creature comforts that we can provide to make your stay truly memorable.
Luxury, ambiance and discretion are paramount with us and is our guiding philosophy for this property. We will be continually posting more pictures of this stunning property to showcase all of its amenities.
Why they chose this property
Camp-Run-A-Muck fit every desire we had for a lakeside mountain getaway that we looked for years to find.
Combined with all of the local attractions, plus an easy drive from anywhere in Northern California, and located in the "heart of gold country", it was an easy choice for us.
Almost everything on the property has been updated and to some extent modernized to take full advantage of progress.
We know that you'll enjoy this mountain getaway almost as much as we do.
What makes this property unique
Crafted in the European style, this A-Frame style home boasts a stunning view, location and solitude, all set in a mature evergreen forest bordering the Tahoe Douglas National Forest in Nevada City, California towards the end of Gold Rush Highway 49.
Extensive woodwork with open beamed ceilings, most rooms come with intricate wooden detailed walls and hand crafted touches.
A mixture of unique and modern furnishings and appointments, we have chosen to reflect the historic ambiance of the locale to add to our guest's experience of the property.
Vaulted ceilings for the upper Master and rear bedrooms. Spectacular 180 degree panoramic views from the Master bedroom, provide a filtered view through mature towering evergreen trees of our own personal lake.
3 fireplaces provide cozy encompassing warmth should you desire. A well stocked woodshed can guarantee a romantic fire every evening.
Crisp evenings, warm days, fresh air and gentle breezes provide that mountain ambiance and feeling intune with the 'real world'.
On demand hot water means never running out. Wait till you experience our hot tub while looking up to a field of stars. No local streetlights means almost perfect stargazing. If the conditions are right, our semi-resident flock of bats may delight and entertain you.
