It's healthy to climb... ... ... and it's rewarded, because freedom lives in the mountains; an old saying reminds us that hiking is the most beautiful and most agreeable form of encountering the countryside.

Saxon Switzerland is an ideal area for mountain hiking, which, in contrast to the high mountains, rewards the delicious summit victory with a panoramic view, often stretching over a wide arc, on paved paths, via safe climbing routes and without the threat of a change in the weather.

In contrast to mountaineers, who traditionally only climb the free-standing rock towers, hikers reach the same altitude, but can choose a route from the valley or start the tour from the car park or bus stop on the mountain shoulder, depending on their strength. If you follow the simple rules of behaviour, the national park area in particular offers undreamt-of opportunities for encounters with nature... Weesenstein Castle, founded around 1200, built on a rocky outcrop above the Müglitz Valley, initially to secure the Meissen-Bohemian trade route and as an outpost against the Bohemian neighbour, expanded into a residential castle in the 15th century, outer castle with Renaissance portal built in the 16th century, worth seeing stucco work, Chinese leather and picture wallpaper, rococo murals and furniture, castle chapel, baroque French garden Stolpen Castle built in the 12th century as a border fortress.Stolpen Castle, built in the 12th century as a border fortress, rises visibly between the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and Lusatia on a 35 metre-high basalt hilltop, owned by the bishops of Meissen for over 300 years, later in electoral possession, buildings made of local basalt, later also sandstone as building material, mainly a prison in electoral times, fate of the Countess v. Cosel, the most important mistress of Elector Augustus the Strong, detained at the castle from 1716 to 1765, various buildings blown up by Napoleonic troops in 1813, today: Historical museum, various tours such as castle courtyards, weapons collection, stables, torture chamber, granaries, Cosel Tower, Seven Peaks Tower, castle dungeons, 82m deep well driven into basalt Kuckuckstein Castle Construction started around 1450, in the Müglitz Valley in Liebstadt on rocks 364m above sea level, rebuilt and extended several times, extensions in the late Gothic style, until the 20th century. Century. Family property, Napoleon stayed overnight in 1813, imposing keep, romantic courtyard, hunting, court and Napoleon rooms, medieval paintings, masonic lodge Großsedlitz Baroque garden laid out by Count Wackerbarth in 1719, planned as a symmetrical complex by Augustus the Strong in 1733 and designed by Knöffel, Languelune and Pöppelmann, Friedrichschlößchen, orangeries, fountains, cascades, pools, sandstone sculptures, hedges, lawns Königstein Fortress first mentioned in 1241, important monument to European fortress architecture, sandstone table mountain, 3 drawbridges lead to the rock massif 245 metres above the Elbe, rock faces up to 40 metres high, eventful history of the complex: originally a medieval border castle, later expanded into a fortress, state prison, most famous prisoner in 1706/07 Johann Friedrich Böttger, inventor of European porcelain, refuge of Saxon electors and kings, kept art treasures and state treasure, excursion destination for the court, late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and pre-modern buildings, 152.5m deep well driven into the rock, ornate bronze gun barrels, tour along 2.2km long fortress wall: Comprehensive panoramic view over large parts of Saxon Switzerland

Hiking idyll - castles and palaces Kirnitzschtalbahn - Felsenbühne RathenLilienstein The most striking table mountain in Saxon Switzerland, located near Königstein and Waltersdorf, rises 300 metres above the Elbe valley and offers fantastic views. Ascent via the 110-metre-high foot slope and a 70-metre-high set of steps to a heavily disintegrated summit plateau, which reveals the remains of a 14th century castle complex. The Lilienstein is a control point for the "Eisenach-Budapest International Mountain Hiking Trail". Kuhstall (Neuer Wildenstein) The Kuhstall is a gateway to nature! The striking rock massif lies in the middle of a densely wooded area. A short climb from the Lichtenhain waterfall on well-surfaced paths. The impressive layered cave (24 metres long, 17 metres wide and 11 metres high!), used as stables by robber barons in the Middle Ages, is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Saxon Switzerland. The Himmelsleiter, a narrow set of steps, leads through the shoulder-wide Ritterschlucht gorge up to a spacious plateau. A fantastic view of the bizarre rocky backdrop of the Schrammsteine and Affensteine awaits you here. Don't miss out on getting to know the gastronomic side of the Kuhstall - an inn offers welcome refreshments before the descent. Pfaffenstein Impressive: the rugged table mountain near Königstein and Pfaffendorf. 349 metres high, 600 metres long, 300 metres wide. Its treasures: the largest layered joint cave in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Bronze Age ring wall, 43 metre high rock needle in front of the southern tip - called Barbarine, goldsmith's cave, around 30 climbing rocks. After the steep ascent through the eye of the needle, you can enjoy a marvellous panorama. A snack and refreshing drinks are available on site! Bastei The "Bastei", a 194 metre high rocky ridge that offers the most famous view in Saxon Switzerland, towers picturesquely above the Elbe as it meanders past the spa town of Rathen. There are reasons to hike and to linger: Ascent and descent through narrow gorges, fascinating rocky landscape, views far into Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland. Walk through the rock garden, over the 76 metre long stone Bastei Bridge to Neurathen Castle. Stop off at the idyllic hotel and restaurant ensemble. Amselgrund Romantic gorge near Rathen, crossed by the Grünbach stream, which plunges as the Amselfall over a 10 m high rock step and disappears into the Amselsee lake (boat hire, circular path around the Amselsee lake, 6 m high dam wall). Climb up to the Bastei - through the Schwedenlöcher, over more than 700 steps. Schrammsteine These are peaks to storm! Vertical rock faces, drops into wooded gorges - the rugged rock massif in the rear part of Saxon Switzerland is an excellent hiking and climbing area that rewards your efforts with fascinating views from the ridge path with views of the Elbe and Schrammstein. It stretches from the rocky base of the Kleiner Winterberg and the Affensteine to the Hoher Torstein. Hinteres Raubschloß (Winterstein) Knightly romance and adventure for nature lovers. The 40 metre high Winterstein massif rises proudly and darkly from the surrounding forests. Iron ladders lead up to the oldest castle site in Saxon Switzerland with the remains of walls and rock chambers carved deep into the stone. A gripping view into misty gorges and yawning chasms. Descent to the Zeughaus, one of the national park's traditional inns. Kirnitzschklamm gorge boat trip Embe
