Step back into time with this late 18th century, gorgeously-preserved home, steeped in American history and rural charm. Located in the once-upon-a time village of Scuffleburg, this idyllic, secluded hollow was once a center for early American craftsman.
During the Civil War, the hamlet was a frequent rendezvous point for Confederate calvary and John Mosby's Rangers (for more details, see: https://gallivantingthroughvirginia.com/2020/10/27/scuffling-out-to-scuffleburg/). Later incorporated into the nearby town of Delaplane, Scuffleburg’s original architecture and rural splendor continue to thrive.
This unique home, which provides the charm of early American craftsmanship with modern amenities, is the perfect getaway for history buffs, wine aficionados (check out the July 18, 2024 article in the Wall Street Journal), nature lovers, or those just looking for some good, old-fashioned peace and quiet.
Its five beds and two baths comfortably sleeps up to 7 people. The impeccably-preserved late 18th century dining room, complete with original stone floors and walls, will transport you back to the distant past, while its more modern screened-in porch is a perfect setting for morning coffee until evening drinks.
A large, inviting front yard leads to the ground level, well-stocked eat-in kitchen, dining room and utility room with full size washer and dryer.
The second level boasts a generous living room with attached sun porch (including a daybed) and a king bedroom with accompanying bath with clawfoot tub. A peaceful east-facing screened-in porch attaches to both the king bedroom and living room. A cozy stone patio with fire pit sits just outside the sun porch.
The upper level includes an additional king-size bedroom and a bedroom with two queen beds. Between, luxuriate in the large bath with skylights, a clawfoot tub and a new designer walk-in shower.
If you enjoy the great outdoors, take advantage of the home’s 2+ acre shaded yard with adjacent woods and stream, complete with Adirondack chairs, outdoor dining area, and fire pit. Abundant hiking and birdwatching options, including Sky Meadows State Park, are conveniently located nearby.
Parking pad includes room for three vehicles and two mountain bikes are readily available for guest use. All interior fireplaces are decorative only.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay at this lovely historical house in beautiful Delaplane. Our host, Greg, responded quickly to our questions about the house and nearby attractions.
We had the most wonderful time! Greg is fantastic and his home is beautiful! The rustic charm of the home with the modern amenities was just what we were looking for for our 50th bday wine weekend celebration. The beds were very comfortable and Greg was so accommodating. We will be back for sure!

Why they chose this property
We (Greg Love and Chris Mills) own the two adjacent houses to the property. Our families have been enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful hollow for many years now. The area has everything...nature, history (the Scuffleburg hollow changed hands dozens of times during the Civil War), wineries, great food and towns galore to explore. We dearly love the area, and we hope our guests will, too.
