About this property
Meadow House near Crater Lake South entrance, upper Rogue River, 100 acre trails
The Meadow House is named for the expansive meadow it is sited on, and for it’s amazing views and surrounding abundance of natural beauty and wildlife.
Located on the historic 100-acre Katydid Ranch in the rural Cascade mountains, (1 mile from the Rogue River, 28.9 miles from Crater Lake south entrance), this 2-story house is nestled between old timber forest woodlands and meadow. A Protected Wildlife Habitat Area, it includes two large ponds, miles of walking/hiking trails, the equine barn and bunkhouse. Owners also reside on the ranch. Available during all four seasons, the Meadow House is as spectacular in the snow-covered winter as it is in the warm weather of summer.
INTERIOR. The Meadow House (part of the historic Katydid Ranch of the early 1900's), has been rebuilt with custom details throughout and is a lovely way to enjoy extra creature comforts indoors while taking in gorgeous views of meadows and mountains through its many windows. Hardwood floors throughout, custom cabinetry, granite counters, large tiled bathrooms, a wood-burning fireplace (living room) and a large bright kitchen (set up for convenience of meal preparation) provide quality comfort.
Take your pick of the upstairs spacious master (king sized bed-new and very comfortable) or the downstairs corner bedroom (queen sized bed-also new and comfy) which is located next to a full bath. Additionally, there is a small private sleeping room located off the upstairs enclosed balcony which we dub the "eagle's nest". It's a small loft room with a double/full bed and works for a single person or two teenagers that share a bed. The Eagle's nest is small and probably not comfortable for an adult couple.
The house is in pristine condition, designed for comfort, and offers views all around. The wrap around deck is great for reading, relaxing, or barbecuing. It's also wonderful at day end for enjoying a glass of wine and waiting for the wildlife to visit.
OUTSIDE. Just outside the front door, guests will find the entrance to the “pinecone trail” which leads up a small hill to a secluded sanctuary perfect for star-gazing (the night skies are magnificent!) or side-by-side hammock-style relaxation, and a cozy camp-fire pit. It's a very short walk back to the house if you decide to spread out your tablecloth for a romantic picnic on the knoll. At summer end, the ranch berry bushes are available to guests in abundance. Pick enough for your special treat of sweet wild blackberries when in season.
WINTER. On a winter day, you might see wild turkeys and deer browsing in the meadow and then catch the elk coming in for moonlight grazing after dusk. The winter months bring clear cold crisp weather and there is nothing more gorgeous than when the fresh blanket of snow covers the meadow. That’s when it’s time to cozy up to the wood-burning fireplace and relax as you watch the gentle white flakes fall. Crater Lake National Park offers free ranger-guided snow-shoe walks on weekends and even loan you the snow-shoes! Snow-mobiling and cross-country skiing are popular too. We love spotting all of the animal tracks in the snow!
SPRING. Wildflowers, bulbs, and by the end of May, the Iris are blooming. The meadow grasses are lush with spring showers and warming weather. A gorgeous time of year to visit.
SUMMER. During the summer months the meadow is shared with the ranch horses for daytime grazing who return to the barn at day end just in time for other wildlife visitors to arrive.
FALL. End of summer visitors are invited to indulge in the abundance of wild-blackberry picking (usually beginning by mid-August and lasting through most of September) If you can actually get the sweet berries in a bucket (supplied) you might decide to make a pie later on, or serve them over ice-cream. Yum! If not, just eat them off the bush and enjoy!
Relaxing is an important all-season activity, but not to the exclusion of hiking the numerous trails, bird/wildlife spotting, horse shoes, mountain biking, visiting the ponds, or checking out the old Boise-Cascade tree nursery on the property.
Guests are welcome, if they wish, to join us at the barn at feeding time to enjoy that special time of day with the horses and say hello to the owners whose home is also situated on the meadow; close enough to be available for any unexpected needs and far enough for privacy.

Meadow House is beautiful and a perfect location if you want to visit Crater Lake. There are also some great hikes in the immediate area of Prospect. Had a great time enjoying the view from the porch. Would definitely recommend Meadow House!
The view from the porch was beautiful. We enjoyed viewing the wildlife while drinking our morning coffee. Barb and Russell were very informative. The house was gorgeous. We definitely enjoyed our stay.
A great place to stay and relax in the country. Quiet, comfortable, very spacious and did I say QUIET!!!We used this rental for a base to go visit Crater Lake ( AMAZING) and the surrounding river gorge and waterfalls.
We stay in a lot of Vrbo-listed properties and Barbara & Don provide one of the very best. Loved picking blackberries on the nearby trails and enjoying views of deer, turkeys & other wildlife from the deck. Very close to Crater Lake NP & spectacular hiking in the Rogue River National Forest. Special place!

Thanks for letting us know how much you enjoyed your stay at the Meadow House, wildlife viewing, and hikes. What a beautiful time to enjoy nearby Crater Lake. We enjoyed hosting you on the Ranch and hope to see you again.
My husband, I, and our adult son stayed here while visiting Crater Lake and loved the spacious, immaculate house and beautiful views of the meadow, trees, and mountain. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Thanks again to our gracious host.
We loved staying here. The entire property is beautiful. The home is large with high end finishes. The meadow view is idilic and the trails were delightful. We wished we could have stayed longer!
Visited Crater Lake and surrounding area with adult family members in late Sept of 2025. Meadow House was as close as one could find to the park and still have all the conveniences of home. Barbara's house was perfect for our stay of 3 nights. It was large and accommodating, comfortable and equipped, secluded yet easily reached. Would highly recommend Meadow House for your visit to Crater Lake or Klamath Falls. And if you have any reservations about the 3rd bedroom-don't . I had no issues accessing it via the master bedroom upstairs.
What a beautiful location and the ranch house oh my goodness. I loved the design and the plan. The view from the dining area: my granddaughter said “right out of a fairytale”!
Tranquility surrounds this spacious rental. We enjoyed the many hiking trails, the porch overlooking the meadow, Turtle Pond with its croaking bull frogs, comfortable beds, an abundance of quality linens and the well equipped kitchen. There is a peace and ease about the property. Property manager was quick and effectively responsive to a couple of issues.I will rent again as I often stay in Prospect,

About the host
Hosted by Barbara Long
Owners Barbara and Dan fell in love with the historic 100 acre Katydid Ranch at first sight and soon after went about restoring its two homes, barn, bunkhouse, outbuildings, and beautiful grounds. A couple of years down the highway, they completed their move , and now live in paradise full time...just across the meadow from the Meadow House. The Meadow House, the first of the renovations to be completed, is a welcome retreat for guests. We hope you love it as much as we do!
Why they chose this property
The original house (where the Meadow House now stands) was first used as the ‘half-way to Crater Lake’ overnight lodging. Its first owner, Katy Grieve, welcomed horse and buggy travelers who had left Medford for the first day of travel, arriving at Katydid Ranch in time to rest the horses and have a meal before dark. The next morning they made the 2nd leg of the journey to Crater Lake. As Barbara and Dan went about restoring the ranch, it seemed only natural to make the Meadow House a vacation rental. The 100 acre property is a Protected Wildlife Habitat Area where birds, deer, elk, fox, turkeys, raccoons and other wildlife call home. Some of the property highlights are two large ponds found deep in the woods, creeks, springs, meadows, hiking trails and a mixed forest and woodlands of conifers, Pacific Madrone and broadleaf. In the spring, wildflowers are abundant in the meadows and under the trees, and the fruit tree blossoms are gorgeous. Shining through the woodlands are nature's stars, the dogwood trees, abundant with white flowers. At the end of May, wild daisies create a blanket of white and the forest floors are lush with triliums and the most beautiful variety of wildflowers. Naturalized iris, from the original ranch along with some new additions, create a rainbow of color the first couple weeks of June. The intent is for guests to experience the renewing energy of natural surroundings, the amazing clarity of light, and the majestic beauty of the Cascades.
