First off: “LOFT” is our newest vacation rental in Betzenstein, and it’s part of the Schlossberg vacation home. We’ve only been offering it for rent since this past September. That’s why it doesn’t have any reviews yet. But if you’re interested in this topic, feel free to check out the listings for the “Burgcafé Vacation Home,” also in Betzenstein. You’ll find what you’re looking for there :) Best regards, the host
Our “Schlossberg” vacation home:
Our approximately 200-year-old former farmhouse is located at the foot of the Schlossberg, right in the heart of the historic, protected town center of Franconia’s smallest town—the beautiful little town of Betzenstein. Within the town walls, which are still largely intact, there are about 60 historic houses and barns, and only a few hundred people live in the historic town center itself. This, combined with its location in the midst of Franconia’s most beautiful natural surroundings and the fact that there is no through traffic passing through the town, is what gives this place its very special charm. Within no time at all, you’ll feel yourself slowing down and finding peace here—and as a result, you’ll be able to truly unwind and recharge. That’s exactly what makes for a great vacation, and Betzenstein offers all of that. The entire house is used exclusively by our vacation guests.
The “LOFT”:
Our “LOFT” vacation suite has been prepared and designed for you over many years with great care, using predominantly eco-friendly construction methods and with uncompromising attention to detail. We’ve designed it in a modern country-chic style that feels fresh and contemporary. The color scheme inside the apartment and on the terrace has a Mediterranean feel. All the amenities are geared toward a stylish, high-quality family vacation. The suite has its own private entrance.
The entire unit features natural clay plaster, which ensures a particularly pleasant indoor climate—often noticeably soothing even for those with allergies. Beneath the stylish oak herringbone parquet flooring lies modern underfloor heating, which transforms the apartment into a cozy home during the colder months. The unit also includes a private sun terrace with high-quality furnishings—ideal for lovely barbecue evenings.
For a fee of 10.00 EUR per person, a linen package can be optionally booked. It includes bed linens, towels, and kitchen linens.
Who is the “LOFT” best suited for?
The “LOFT” is probably best suited for a high-quality couple’s or family vacation, as well as for discerning climbing groups—accommodating up to 4 people.
For younger guests, there’s a truly beautiful, large adventure playground behind the Schlossberg with a zip line and other great attractions (about a 5-minute romantic walk away).
What amenities are available locally?
In Betzenstein’s old town, everything is just a few steps away—100 meters is considered a long way here.
Wirth Butcher Shop (about a 1.5-minute walk):
Now that the Kolb Bakery has unfortunately closed its doors for good, the long-established Wirth family—who have been based in Betzenstein since 1911—has fortunately expanded its offerings accordingly. Our town is very grateful to them for this. In addition to the very best handmade Franconian meats, grilled items, and sausages from their own slaughterhouse, they now offer fresh bakery items daily (rolls, baguettes, croissants, etc.) as well as a rotating selection of homemade cakes and/or sweet pastries. The selection is rounded out by a small ice cream freezer and a refrigerated display case featuring cheese, yogurt, butter, homemade jam, and other regionally sourced products. Yay—so we still have our little village store—and we’re all very happy about that.
Also brand-new (since July 2026) is “Wirth’s HÄUSLA,” run by the same family—a small wooden hut not far from the store: There, you can stock up on sausages and meats, cold drinks, milk, cream, yogurt, cheese, cakes, and regional ice cream around the clock—even outside of store hours—on a self-service basis—a lovely little oasis with a view of the Badersberg. In addition, Betzenstein is served three times a week by various bakery trucks.
Blumen-Otto (about a 1-minute walk):
Here you can buy flowers as well as fresh fruit and vegetables—and, of course, enjoy a nice little chat if you’d like.
Eier-Otto (a few houses away):
Three houses down, they sell fresh eggs from their own local farm—large, bright yellow, and really delicious. We practically don’t buy any other eggs anymore.
Restaurants:
Within walking distance, you’ll find two lovely restaurants, both with inviting outdoor patios. One of them caters to discerning tastes and is located just about 100 meters away. There are also many other great dining options around Betzenstein—a personalized list of recommendations is posted on-site.
Supermarkets:
The nearest large supermarkets, Rewe and Aldi, are located about 5 km away in Plech.
What can you do?
The possibilities are virtually endless. Of course, you’ll have more options by car, but there’s plenty to experience on foot or by bike as well.
• A truly beautiful, heated outdoor pool is just a romantic 10-minute walk away (season typically runs from May through September, weather permitting). If your children would like to earn a swimming certificate in a safe environment, they can do so there during your vacation.
• Right next to it is a truly beautiful climbing garden.
• Numerous hiking trails run through Betzenstein—for both short and long hikes. The same applies to bike tours; some of them are among the most scenic in the region. The Way of St. James also passes directly through the town.
• In addition to a tourist information office (about a 1-minute walk; the same building also houses a small local history museum), Betzenstein itself features several medieval landmarks, such as historic city gates, a fountain, and the town church.
• In winter, depending on snow conditions, you can enjoy a bit of downhill skiing at the “Spies” ski lift (about a 5-minute drive) or go cross-country skiing on one of the loop trails around Betzenstein.
• City tours to Nuremberg, Bayreuth, or Bamberg are ideal for day trips.
• Betzenstein is located in the heart of one of the world’s premier climbing and bouldering regions. From here, you can reach some of the region’s most exciting climbing areas on foot. In town, you’ll also find the “Rockstore Frankenjura,” a specialty shop for climbing gear with a small attached bouldering gym.
• Therme Obernsees: an impressive sauna complex with a variety of saunas and pools—one of the most beautiful facilities in the region.
• The surrounding area is home to numerous old castles and palaces, as well as stalactite caves. You can explore them up close, as many are privately owned.
• Pottenstein is home to the “Erlebnisfelsen”—a sort of Franconian amusement park, if you will: featuring several summer toboggan runs, the 130-meter-long Skywalk high above the valley gorge, and other attractions such as climbing stations, trampolines, and bumper boats. You can also go pedal boating on the adjacent Schöngrundsee. One of the region’s truly beautiful and impressive stalactite caves, the “Teufelshöhle,” is also located nearby.
• Within a radius of just 35 km, you’ll find a total of seven 18-hole golf courses, each with its own unique character. This certainly allows us to proudly bear the label “Golf Vacation in Franconian Switzerland.”
• … and much more—we could fill entire pages with it! In any case, there’s something for everyone.
