Gingerhill Farm Retreat. Commune with Nature In South Kona.
Gingerhill Farm is located on five acres of organic orchards and gardens nestled just above famous Kealakekua Bay. We offer serenity and escape mere minutes away from local restaurants and shops.
The Sunset Suite is a large room in the main house with private bathroom and shower. It has a queen and a twin bed. Relax on the deck in the evenings as you enjoy breathtaking images of the sun setting over the Pacific.
Take a stroll through our gardens and then marvel at the sunset from one of various scenic decks. Hike down to Kealakekua Bay and swim with the Dolphins. Gingerhill Farm offers an exotic escape from the hustle and bustle of 21st century living.
In our commitment to promoting transparency we would like to say that there is more to sustainable agriculture than whether you use chemical fertilizer or organic pellets. Here at Gingerhill Farm we heed our role as stewards of the land and commit to practices which improve the health of our acreage year after year. This means we spray no insecticides or herbicides. It also means that in Hawaii, a subtropical island, we experience intervals of mosquito or termite pressure. Resonant Coqui frogs, native to Puerto Rico, sing at night and sound like crickets. We consider these players as part of our ecosystem, and strive to maintain a balance. Our grounds are beautiful and fertile, partly tamed and partly wild. We ask that guests understand these dynamics and book accordingly.

We loved our stay in this uniquely quiet, fecund, friendly and beautiful spot. Our space was lovely and well-appointed, Sylvia was a competent and beyond-friendly host and we delighted in all the fruit trees, flowers and most especially, the animals. We hope to return and offer all the bright beings of Gingerhill Farm our aloha and mahalo.

Beautiful grounds, good room
Staying on the farm was lovely. I would've given 5 stars except that the shower in the suite was clogged and quickly filled with water. Otherwise, the hosts were nice, easygoing, and helpful, and we had a great stay.

Lovely farm, quiet, peaceful, loved watching sunsets. Access to cooking facility might have been nice also. It was a little hard to find, maybe a sign on the gate to know we are there. Overall a very pleasant and relaxing experience. Thank you
The property is beautiful, it is in the jungle. There are lots of animals, we saw tons of birds, geckos, frogs (they chirped all night), chickens, cats, and heard at least one cow every day. The room was spacious and had a fridge, a burner to cook on and a good bathroom. I made the mistake of using the washer, as it was outside and thought it was OK and had to pay 20. Otherwise it was a nice stay and the host helped us to start the rental car which was dead on our last day. I did not do the yoga class, but if I was in better shape I would have.

It sounds like you made the most of your time here, and we’d love to welcome you back anytime, maybe even for a yoga class next time!
Mahalo,
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Gingerhill Farm. The room was spacious with the beautiful view over the garden and the ocean - perfect place to watch Sunsets. Iris and Zach welcomed us with fruits and eggs from their farm; this was a perfect snack after a long flight.
We were worried about mosquitoes, haven't had a single bite around our room and patio. I did find some mosquitoes around the area with the chicken when the local cat was showing me around the place.
The location was perfect for us. It is close to all the main snorkeling spots: 5 mins from the trail to Captain Cook Monument, 15 mins to Two Steps and Kahalu'u Park. It's close to some great restaurant, but it feels very quiet and remote. I loved the sound of frogs and beautiful starry skies on a clear night. We would love to come back next time we are visiting big island.

So glads you enjoyed your stay. Our Cat, Black Bean misses you.
PROS: We loved the charming room and its private location that's far enough away from the busy resorts/hotels/tourist traps. Great local eats nearby. The kitchen had most of what we need and the volunteer staff was responsive and very friendly. Not a lot of room but just enough for two people who left each morning and returned each night after driving all over the big island. The frogs greeted us each night and on clear nights the stars are visible from the little porch. Snorkeling gear and body boards we made available to us. and when we asked they let us borrow a cooler to take to the beach.CONS: We had hoped to have more interactions with the volunteers and owners/cofounders but they kept mostly to themselves. For those who are extremely squeamish about bugs in the room, this may not be a good stay for you. We had several visitors in our room and in the walls/ceilings: roach (one very pregnant), termite (frass on the ceiling), grasshopper (harmless-we captured & released), unknown animals (scrambling around at night in the walls next to the toilet and right above the ceiling). The management is unphased by these reports (except perhaps for the termite frass) and reminded us that we are on a farm. ;-) So, again, it's a charming stay but if you are sensitive to the farm activities above, this may not be a good fit for you. I do hope the management takes care of the animals and termites because those two can do serious damage to their building structurally & electrically

One of the best views on the island
We enjoyed a very special week at GingerHill in February. The room was clean, bright, and spacious. Despite being very close to town, the environment is quiet and reminiscent of old Hawaii. The best feature is sitting on the deck and gazing upon the distant ocean through gorgeous, gorgeous landscaping! Mayomi, Zach, and Lisa were particularly kind and friendly hosts. This will absolutely be our first choice when we return. Mahalo.

Peaceful setting
We were welcomed to this peaceful setting by the owner. Our bedroom overlooked a beautiful setting and our shared kitchen was adequate for our needs. The private shower was hot and the bathroom was clean and functional. The owner was very gentle and provided us with pots and pans to fix our dinner and pleasant conversation and information. The isolated location provided privacy and the night sky was beautiful with no ambient light to interfere with star gazing. An enjoyable stay with adequate parking. Local farmers market nearby and a zen ambiance in effect at this rental. I would stay here again.

Unique experience
You get a large bedroom with a double bed and a single bed with a very nice bathroom. The room is attached to the house and some house noises come through. Looks right out onto the ocean from 1500 feet or so up. Chairs are available if you ask.
This is an active and beautiful 4 acre organic farm and for us much of the appeal came from chances to talk to the proprietors, interns and guests and to see some of the artwork of Mayumi Oda who founded the farm 15 years ago.
For an extra $40 per day you can participate in the program, which includes meditation, breakfast, work on the farm, yoga, and lunch. We didn't choose to do this, and it really is just another option for your stay.
Everyone was very friendly and the setting is wonderful.
It is close to all of the sights along the southern Kona coast, e.g. the Painted Church, Peace Garden and Place of Sanctuary.

Tranquil, peaceful, Big Island Farmstay - a Hawaiian vacation without the rush and the chaos.
When my husband, my daughter and I planned our vacation to Hawaii we were searching for something special, something that did not make us feel like time-limited tourists. We found Big Island Farmstay to be that special place. The peace and quiet...the stars at night...in the morning, the sound of Roosters crowing in the distance. Waking up to see the ocean peering through the tranquility of the lush vegetation made us feel like we slept in a botanical garden. Beautiful, tropical, and green. The owner most graciously offered us fruit from her garden...there is nothing like a banana or a papaya fresh picked. A good place for the soul and to experience the true meaning of Aloha.

About the host
Hosted by owner/property manager
Iris and Zach, met on Iris's native island of 'Magic' in Brazil. It is their dream to one day teach people from all over the world how to live sustainably in community, a return to the village model. As co directors of Gingerhill Farm on the Big Island, they teach the Sustainable Living Course and host guests from all over the world who come to grow and cook the healthiest foods and practice yoga and meditation. Come and try the Gingerhill Farm lifestyle and see if it doesnt agree with you. Namastê.
Why they chose this property
South Kona's "Greenbelt," has long been known for farming, especially coffee. Lush growth and farms, cute stores, antiques and cafes dot the road down to Historic Kealakekua Bay where Captain Cook once "discovered" Hawaii and where tourists now swim with the Dolphins. We chose this property because of its deep volcanic soil, ideal elevation and breathtaking ocean views.
What makes this property unique
Now that the gardens and orchards are mature, we love being able to harvest a huge variety of nutrient-dense food from our land. Visitors are always blown away by our Garden of Eden-style food forests.
