About this property

Waterfront Romantic Chuckanut Bay Cottage with Beach

Beachfront Cottage on Chuckanut Bay

Chuckanut Bay Cottage is just steps from the beach and a close trip down scenic Chuckanut Drive to historic Fairhaven in beautiful Bellingham, Washington. Perfect for a couple needing a romantic getaway, or the outdoor enthusiast who wants water for their kayaking or SUPing out the front door or miles of trails for biking and hiking out the backdoor.

This beachfront cottage is situated on a bluff 40ft above the pristine waters of the Salish Sea with gorgeous views of Chuckanut Bay, Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands. The sunset view is spectacular all year long!

The 600 square foot cottage is well appointed. The main floor is one large room with a fully equipped kitchen on one side looking through the sitting area and out a picture window facing Chuckanut Bay. There is a large comfortable sofa, flat screen,Apple TV and wifi throughout the cottage. The full bath features a tub and shower. The cottage has naturally finished reclaimed-original wood floors throughout. In the corner of the room is a gas-wood stove making this a very cozy cottage any time of the year.

Upstairs you will find one large room that partially overlooks the main floor. There is a luxurious king size bed facing the bay and islands, wonderful sleeper sofa and ample shelving and hanging space. Both floors are private. Although open to below.

From the cottage it is a short walk down a stairway to the beach. At beach level there is a wonderful private sitting area where you can swim or enjoy the calm bay by kayak or rowboat.

It is a quick bike ride on Chuckanut Drive where one can get on the interurban trail and ride just 4 miles north to Fairhaven, a historic seaside village with great shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Fairhaven is also the gateway to the San Juan Islands, Victoria and Alaska by ferry and hosts the Amtrack train station if one wants a quick trip to Vancouver BC or Seattle. Imagine all of that without getting into your car! Go south and find the public boat launch, beaches and access to phenomenal mt. biking and hiking of Larabee St. Pk., just minutes from the cottage. Further down Chuckanut Drive are oysterbeds, gorgeous farmland and further yet is Seattle, which is 90 minutes by car. To the northeast Mt. Baker and the foothills of the Cascades offer world class snowboarding and skiing as well as endless miles of backcountry exploring.

Like all the houses on Chuckanut Bay, it is close to the main railway line that links Seattle and Vancouver BC. When the cottage was renovated the owner/builders who live next door, went to great lengths to quiet the cottage as much as possible. If you wish to further diminish the train sounds, earplugs are provided.

I am a semi-retired custom home designer/builder and now work as a construction consultant. I started working at a very young age and eventually owned and ran a large local residential construction company. I designed and built many local homes. Presently I am concentrating my efforts on our VRBO as well as clients that need my expertise. My wife has also worked her way up through the Medical Profession and currently works for a NW Native Tribe.

Why they chose this property

After living in the Northwest for many years in several locations we have settled in one of the very best. Many locals know it as the 'Bahamas of Bellingham'. You can see what they mean by checking out the garden. The waterfront opportunities our property provides has been limitless, more than we could explore in our lifetime! One of our favorite things to do is just sit and watch what the change in tide brings; the magnificent sunsets, weather over the water, the birds and boats.

What makes this property unique

Whatcom county is a wonderful place to recreate but it is also is a great community. It has great environmental consciousness and diversity. WWU contributes a great deal to the community. It is a mountain bike destination with one of the greatest jewels of the region right out front, the San Juan Islands. Sunsets at our property are truly some of the best. A short paddle from the beach is Chuckanut Island, a Nature Conservancy island, with nesting seabirds and fine white shell beaches at low tide. Along the way to the Island you will likely spot an Eagle, Blue Heron, Otter or a Seal that share this wonderful bay with us. The island environment is protected so only day visitors are allowed.
In addition to Chuckanut Mt., nearby Galbraith mountain has great trails for mt. biking and hiking. Hang gliders land on the Bow valley just off Chuckanut drive. Fairhaven is a stone's throw from the property and offers many great options for eating out. Restaurants along Chuckanut Drive offer seafood and other gourmet meals for a special dining experience and offer great romance too. Those that wish to cook their own food, the kitchen is fully appointed and if anything extra is needed we may have it at our house. We love the Taylor Shellfish Farm which is a few minutes from the house and there is a Wednesday Farmer's market in Fairhaven for fresh produce and local arts and crafts. Haggen's grocery, a NWFRESH store, is in nearby Fairhaven as well and offers many organic choices.
