Peaceful village

Wonderful stay at Prancing Pony. Laura was responsive and great at communicating. The house was clean and provided everything we needed for a great relaxing stay in Door Co. The neighborhood is quiet and a small public beach just down the road provided a great place for morning and evening walks along the shore of Lake Michigan.

Perfect Door County Get Away

The Prancing Pony is a lovely, quiet spot perfectly situated to be away from the hustle and bustle of Door County towns but close enough to access everything you want to do. Super comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen and good community spaces large enough for games and an occasional sporting event on the large flat screen tv met of family’s needs.

August Getaway

Very nice, rustic, well kept property. Plenty of room for my family of 4 plus 1. Property had a beautiful view of Lake MI from the deck and access to the lake was only a few doors down across the street. The sandy beach was great for long walks and just hangin’ out.

The Prancing Pony is a Door County Gem!

We are from St. Louis, but used to live in Wisconsin, so have been to Door County several times. We were looking for a quiet spot for a week of relaxing vacation for our two high school and two college kids - our full family of six. The Prancing Pony was PERFECT! The property itself worked well for a family of our size. A very nice outdoor patio over the garage where I drank my coffee every morning with a nice view of the lake through the trees across the road. The kitchen was well appointed and a fun place to cook and serve food on the nights we stayed in. The living room offered a quiet reading spot and the back TV room was a bonus that the teenagers definitely took advantage of. This is a rustic Norwegian-style house, with beautiful wood beams and antique furniture throughout. It was clean and comfortable. There is no air conditioning for our mid-August visit, but the weather was fine, and we loved sleeping in the cool evenings with the windows open. The location was close enough for many fun day trips. Close to Donny's Glidden Lodge Restaurant and the Hitching Post - we ate at both - excellent. A small, but nice public beach across and down the street - maybe a 5 minute walk? Convenient location for all the activities and we did a lot. Boating/fishing in Bailey's Harbor. Taking the ferry over to Washington Island. Great hiking everywhere - we loved nearby Cave Point County Park. Golf. Fish Boil. Shopping. An amazing trip!

The Pony does not disappoint

This is a great rustic and spacious home to access a very special beach. I’ve been roaming these shores since I was a little, and now I bring my own kids. It has the feel of a classic Door County getaway.

Beautiful craftsmanship

This home is rustic built with beautiful craftsmanship. The second floor is open at to the beams they support the roof. I am good with construction styles, but beam work in this home is truly beautiful . The walls that separate the rooms on the second floor do not go all the way up to the walls to show case this impressive work . The first floor is open, the kitchen is well equipped , the deck outside is large and comfortable . It is a bit of a walk to the private beach. The public beach entrance is a very short drive away. There are houses very close by. It is close to sturgeon bay for any needs you have. Very close to 2 parks .

Had a wonderful time.

We had a wonderful 5 day stay. Our hostess was very communicative and helpful. The location could not have been nicer. We were steps from the beach. Places you could sit on the beach were limited but within a few minutes walk and perfect for kids. If you are beach walker as we were there was no limitation to access. The home was very comfortable and spacious and had everything we needed. I would happily stay again.

Lovely Rustic Home Close to a Fabulous Beach

My husband and I, our two adult daughters, and our dog thoroughly enjoyed the week we spent at the Prancing Pony. We had everything we needed for our stay and were wowed by the beauty of the sandy beach that is a five minute walk from the property. It was great to be on the quiet side of Door County but within a quick drive of some of the more touresty towns, restaurants, and shopping. We hope to book again next summer.

Peace and Tranquillity Exemplified

1st time renting on the “quiet side” of DC. It was wonderful! Everbody loved the deck, the sound of the waves outside our bedroom windows, the flying squirrels at night, the cozy wood timber interior and the daily strolls up and down this quiet stretch of road. A great “base camp” for our Door County adventures!

We really enjoyed our stay. Great location. We weren't able to get the TV to work, but we didn't need it and it was actually nice not to have it. We played games, went to beach, walked and loved sitting out on the patio.

Cute house in a Great Lake Michigan location

Really enjoyed our stay here! There is a quiet road between the house and the beach (hard to see in photos) and then the beach access is just four houses down. Also close by is the pier which was perfect for taking our kayaks out. This stretch of beach is the best there is in Door County. Been going to this area my whole life and sometimes the beach is wide and sometimes it’s narrow. This season it was nice and wide! Thanks for a cute rental with all the comforts of home!

I loved drinking my morning coffee and gazing out at the lake from the deck. We all enjoyed walking along the private beach, and the Whitefish Bay neighborhood. Plenty of options for sleeping. Fully equipped kitchen and even bowls, toys and gates for our pampered pooch. Thanks Prancing Pony for a relaxing week!

Wonderful Time!

We had a wonderful week away in one of our favorite places to vacation -- Door County, Wisconsin. The location of this property was perfect in that it was right across from Lake Michigan with beautiful views and also far enough away from the main touristy towns. The property was very clean, with ample amenities (kitchen lacked nothing which is HUGE in my book!). Property manager was very responsive to inquiries before and during our stay. We would definitely stay here again!

Great Fall Getaway

This house was clean, comfortable and in a great neighborhood. My husband and I spent 5 nights with another couple and our dog and it was a great getaway. Lots to do in the area and the location made it super easy to get around. The biking was awesome and my husband and I walked/ran every morning with our dog on the quiet road. The only negative was that the upstairs is all open air and so there isn’t much to keep noise down. It was fine for 4 of us, but anymore would be hard I think. All in all it was a great place to hang out!

About the host

Host profile image
We are a family of 8 (which include 3 grandchildren). We love outdoor activities Door County has to offer - hiking, kayaking, biking, climbing, swimming, antiquing, and exploring. Our home is filled with antiques, folk art and original oil paintings. We continually add special touches to the home. On the outside of the house under each of the eves are hand carved finials.

I grew up in Northwest Illinois and vacationed in Wisconsin with my sisters and brother. We always loved the water and outdoor activites. As children, my kids loved playing on the beach or in the woods. As they have grown, they still do the same - it's a place to be young again! The grandchildren are following in the same foot steps, by enjoying the water, learning about and appreciating nature. My dogs love swimming and running on the beach - it is their favorite part of coming up to Whitefish Bay.

The Prancing Pony has become a special place where our family gathers to get away, explore, play games, do crafts, cook and laugh A LOT! There are several hiking trails accessible on foot from the home, including a trail into Whitefish Bay Dunes State Park at the end of the deadend street, Old Baldy (with wooden platforms and a overlook platform), incrediable single track biking trails near the home, and kayaking right from the pier (4 doors down).

Why they chose this property

When my children were small we used to camp in Door County. It was the perfect place that was close to home with everything we needed - outdoor activities, great beaches and a place to relax. I would take the kids to Whitefish Dunes State Park where they would swim and participate in the kids activities run by the park. We would look down the beach and imagine what it would be like to have property 'down there'. When the the opportunity presented itself to buy a home, I looked all around the Peninsula, found this home and knew it was the one. It reminded me of Switzerland and I instantly fell in love with the craftsmanship and charm of the home, not to mention the area.

Named from Lord of the Rings, The Prancing Pony was a safe haven and place for all walks of life to gather. Our family considers the home to be that special place where all can gather for a peaceful get away. I have been blessed with this beautiful home and love the chance to share it with family, friends and vacationers -- extended friends.

Please sign our guest book and tell us about your trip. I love reading about your adventures.

What makes this property unique

You will love the craftsmanship of the open beam structure and love that went into building this home by the original owner who was a carpenter. The home is filled with antiques, folk art and original oil paintings.

We love going to bed listening to the waves and waking up in the morning looking at the beautiful architecture. It is so relaxing to sit on the large porch and read a book or stare up at the night sky and watch for satellites and falling stars. We take walks several times a day down the beach, down the street or on the many trails in the state park. People of all ages and their dogs love the beach -- there's simply nothing like it. The sandbars make it a lot of fun to walk way out and only be knee deep. The lake is different each day and ever day is a new adventure.

Bed linens and towels are provided, unlike properties managed by other rental companies.
