About this property

Convenience Of Town, Relaxation Of Country Life, Incredible Views, Kid Friendly

Fall on San Juan Island is special. The crowds are gone, ferry traffic lightens up, the weather is just starting to cool, but winter storms feel far away. It’s also a special time at the Homestead; the clouds over the Straits become increasingly dynamic – often framing the Olympic Mountains – the crickets start chirping their way into winter and spiders’ webs begin to cover the grass. Then there’s the produce from the garden. This is the richest time of year when the main crops all mature. We typically have corn, lettuce, carrots, basil, garlic, pumpkins, and winter squash. Then there’s the orchard; apples of five different varieties, and pears in three varieties.
The garden and orchard are both entirely organic and the products are of a high quality. Our guests are invited to harvest as much as they’d like for their meals and we encourage our guests to fill a bag for meals at home.
Do you want to combine the convenience of downtown Friday Harbor and the relaxation of country life? Consider spending your vacation at our Homestead We are on a narrow, dead-end, country road one mile from the Town’s boundary. We are less than two miles from downtown and the ferry landing and less than 1.5 miles from the airport.
We are on 5 acres and surrounded by large parcels. We look over the farmlands of San Juan Valley on to the Straits of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains. This view has been declared by a citizen committee to be the second best in all of San Juan County.
Our home and property are very child-friendly. Your children are invited to explore the outside games and facilities and the inside children's books, toys, and puzzles.. The very light traffic at the end of Lampard Road ensures that you and your children will be safe if you bike or walk on the road. Is there a runner in your party? We are on Lampard Road which is great for a two mile run and longer runs are available on nearby county roads and trails.
We have a large fenced in garden/orchard that is ideal for kids' play. Plus, you can harvest fruit in season.
Finally, we are very proud of our Internet access. I just ran a speed test: 40 Mbps up and 26 down! And the strength is excellent, too: right now (in the midst of a heavy rain storm) the WiFi strength is RSSI = -29dBm.
Cell phones: our carrier is T Mobile which has excellent service on the property. Verizon is marginal here and other carriers' reception is poor. Except for an emergency 911 phone, there is no landline at the house, requiring that all calls be make via your cell phones, perhaps using your WiFi call options.

Beautiful spot

Larry’s home was a wonderful retreat for our group of three couples. Upon our arrival he was very helpful in showing us the amenities and sharing ideas for our visit on San Juan. The setting was picturesque and quite peaceful. We strolled in the garden daily, had several salads and even made an apple pie from the produce. The house was very spacious, kitchen well supplied and beds were quite comfortable. We would recommend this home to other small groups and families with children.

Friday Harbor Oaisis

Larry's property is amazing. He's available if any issues come up and very generous in allowing guests to access the garden. We stuffed ourselves with plums, cauliflower, lettuce, broccoli, carrots, basil, etc. All fresh from the garden. I would recommend this home to anyone looking for a place in Friday Harbor. Its just a short drive to the ferry but away from the crowds in downtown. Overall, the perfect place for a get away!

TGI Friday Harbor

Four of us adults enjoyed several days at Larry's comfortable, relaxing, well-appointed home. Larry is a terrific, communicative, welcoming host. The family-friendly house is just a short drive down a quiet country road to Friday Harbor, yet the setting is so pristine, it's easy to spend the day gazing at the mountains, lounging on the deck, watching deer, playing croquet, and foraging for plums and apples in the garden.

Great family vacation!

We had a great time spending 4th of July at this house. My almost 3 year old had so much to do. Larry showed us all the plants in the garden and she loved picking her own veggies to make a salad. I was even able to throw together a homemade salad dressing from the stocked pantry/fridge! The property is beautiful with a great view and lots of space to run around. Also a dog run for dog owners. We also have a 6 m/o and he had a pack n play and high chair for her! Master closet was big enough to put the pack n play in, for anyone who's baby needs pitch black like mine 😂 Great time overall!

Tranquil getaway just out of town

I love the location of this home. It's tucked in the wood yet it has a wide open property with a spectacular country side view! The home itself was wide open as well. It's very spacious! We had a great stay! Thanks so much, Larry. I appreciate that you allowed us to pick from your great garden!

Great place to stay!

We loved staying at this home just outside of Friday Harbor. It was quiet and had a nice territorial view. The owner shared his garden and orchard with us which was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you!

Beautiful views, great host, just the right distance from town.

We really enjoyed the home, especially the views. Larry was so responsive and really helped us pick our hikes. We liked being just a little away downtown but we could easily drive a few minutes to walk around.

Wonderful base for cycling

We organized our own cycling tour of the San Juan islands, on San Juan Island and using ferries to go to Orcas and Lopez Islands. The location was perfect for a quick 10-minute cycle downtown to the ferries. We prefer to cook our own meals and the kitchen was spacious and amazingly well-stocked for those of us with vegan and gluten-free dietary restrictions. We also made use of the grill! And the fresh veggies in the garden were wonderful to have available! It was great to have separate bathrooms for 2 couples. There was lots of comfortable seating in the living area to spread out, and a very peaceful setting away from the noise and tourists in town. Larry was extremely helpful during our entire stay, always available to answer questions - the perfect host!

Very comfortable, home away from home!

Was a very relaxing stay in a very homey home! Hope to visit again and bring the family! We were there celebrating our Anniversary and now have a place we would be happy to stay at again or bring along our kids and Grandkids! A great time, we didn't want to leave!

Relaxing, peaceful, homestead retreat

Larry's home is ideal for families looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living, while still having all the convenience of Friday Harbor close by. The property is quiet, with beautiful views of the valley and mountains. Larry maintains a stellar vegetable garden, which we all took full advantage of! In July we enjoyed delicious carrots, broccoli, basil, beets, and plums and cooked lots of meals centered around these items. If you are hoping to settle in to a home away from home, this place is perfect. My toddler loved reading the collection of books, playing with toys, and splashing in the kiddie pool outside. We had a few cookouts using the nice gas grill, and enjoyed many al fresco meals on the deck. There is lots of room for a large family to spread out here between the large home and property, so it's great for a group retreat. Larry is the most generous host, offering us lots of local insight on places to explore and encouraging us to take advantage of all his property's amenities (we did). This is a comfortable, lived-in home, which helped us all feel comfortable and on vacation immediately. Enjoy!

About the host

I've lived here for 32 years. They've been the best years of my life. You will love it on San Juan Island, too! I moved here for a better environment for my young children. Although my previous experience had been in science and engineering, I began working at the public schools and ended up staying for over 20 years. I'm now fully retired, enjoying 5 grandchildren, and helping raise my youngest child, a junior in high school.

Why they chose this property

My house and its surrounding five acres are on the upper edges of San Juan Valley. We, therefore, look out over the valley, across the valley to the Straits, and across the Straits to the Olympic Mountains. Most of the valley is protected farmland which creates this unique environment of being in a rural/agricultural situation but only one mile from town. There's not another place like this on the Island.

What makes this property unique

Living at the end of a single lane, dead-end road one mile from town is dream. The only evening noise is the bleating of lambs or the moaning of cattle. Or maybe it is just very quiet. The most common traffic on the road are walkers and runners.
Having five grandchildren, the property is very kid friendly. There are also a variety of places where adults can gather or separate including the orchard, a large hammock, around the deck furniture, or in a small art studio,
Finally, we are very proud of our Internet access. There is no landline phone (except for an emergency 911 phone) in the house so you will depend on your cell phone for all calls.
