Spent a weekend here during the ‘25 ski season. Great house, great location! We had a blast here and would recommend this place to anyone wanting to visit Apex. Host was great and quick to respond to any questions we had.
Our group had a great stay here. The wood fireplace was a nice feature; when the power went out in the village and surrounding area we were still warm.
Nice, very funky in a good way. Very convenient to slopes. You may need to tighten bolts to water closet on toilet in upstairs bath. 2 flourescent lights missing.
Cabin was across the street from the Strayhorse Trail making ski-in/ski-out really easy.
We arrived during an extreme cold spell (-25 deg C). It took a couple of hours for the wood stove and baseboards to warm up but the cabin was cozy and warm even with the frigid temperatures for the rest of our stay.
We have faced many issues during our stay.- It is not a ski-in/ski-out cabin as you need to cross the road in front of the cabin and drive to the ski station and there is no other choice to cross it. Same when coming from Grandfather trail, there is no way to come back to the cabin. - No pool table as per description and pictures when booked. Owners should have informed us and not have the disappointment at arrival. It was indeed the only reason that we have finally decided to book for this cabin.- Hot tub not working properly, no bubble despite activating them. it needs to be repaired.- Cleanliness of the cabin and the exterior was a big issue: dirty kitchen stove, dishes, pans, glasses with some glasses broken as well as many spider nets that we have found at check in. - There were even 2 dog droppings in front of the wood storage and the hot tub. When we have informed the owners about it, they replied with sarcasm that they could come to remove them if we pay 30?!- Few cans and some waste were also found all around the property. - We have tried to book previously for a stay in mid February, but the owners declined despite being available and decided to increase the price per night. What a disappointment for our family. Don't recommend at all. Too expensive for the current status of the cabin
property was great. the only problem I had was communicating with the host through the vrbo site. As it will not let me message him through the thread.
The cabin was definitely roomy and stocked . Although the lower level was quite musty. The cabin would benefit from having a map to find the ski in ski out.
Everything was easy to find and we really appreciated the kitchen accessories such as slow cooker and microwave and multitude of pots and pans. The wood stove did a great job of keeping us warm.
We needed a large cabin for all of our family to stay in while hosting our wedding in the Village at Apex. Holy Smoke is a excellent spot for 4-5 couples to all sleep comfortably and have great ski-in, ski-out access.
The pool table is the cherry on top as it provided a great spot to hang out and relax when not out on the hill.
We had a family vacation for eight of us ages 8 to 77. Four skiers so close to the mountain was ideal. Lots of space to gather as a group for dinner and games, while also separate rooms for quiet time. We will absolutely be coming back again!
Cabin is spacious and location is great. Loved the wood burning stove and water pressure was good.
BUT. . . beds are all very uncomfortable, bedding is old and not cozy at all, tv is small and the place is full of trinkets and clutter. Also was not given proper access code and couldn't get in so had to VRBO to get ahold of host. Left us cold, locked outside for hours while wanting to unload before dark.
Two other things to note:
get ready to get hit with a bunch of rules and information at check-in that should really be listed on the listing when booking. I also felt like I was put off cancelling guests that I knew weren't going to be able to make it so I could only get 50% refund. In the end I was offered $75 dollars at check-in for 2 guests not coming which just felt like a kick in the teeth.
But with upgrades and some effort this place could be really great.
We had a great time staying here. We rarely saw anyone in the neighbourhood. The kitchen was fully stocked and there were loads of towels in the bathroom. The beds were fairly comfortable. The TV is older and small and can be used for watching DVD’s only (which was OK with me). It was an adjustment for my husband but worked out fine 😉 Sadly, fires were banned so we didn’t get to enjoy a camp fire on the spacious property. It was a 15 minute drive to get to the bottom of the mountain and then another 15 minutes to Penticton. My kids would like to stay here again.
Apex is a great alternative to staying in the valley during the summer. It's super chill and quiet up on the mountain - with a small group of friends, the cabin was a great spot to gather.
This was a excellent rustic cabin. Just my GF and I stayed, but it sleeps a lot more. It was 40 min from Penticton and 50 min from Oysoss. Hot summer days at the beaches and cool summer evening at the cabin. My GF and I would like to come back again and bring are family’s. Thanks John and Krista for sharing your family cabin. 😊
The cabin is a short drive from Penticton (35 min) with a scenic view that gave us the chance to see a bear! We were happy to be far from the fires and the heat of the valley. This is not the place if you want to be near the beaches but this is if you want fresh Mountain air. The basement was a bit humid but was ok with open windows. Very cozy for two families with teenagers!

Someone dropped the ball
My family and I arrived 10 minutes early before our 4 PM check-in,so we just explored the outside of the cabin. At 4 o’clock we tried the door as it was locked, checked our emails/ spam to see if they sent us a code for the door (Nothing received)
Tried the TWOnumbers on their website TWICE and just had to leave messages, now it is 4:45 and we contacted VRBO where then they contacted the owners to email us the pass code for the door. Didn’t enter the home till 4:50pm

About the host
Hosted by John Redenbach
John and Krista both grew up in the valley and love spending their year round at the hill with family and friends. they hope the family cabin adds warmth and fun to your stay.
Why they chose this property
This cabin has character and feels like home, with ample room for the whole family. With views of the hill and within a short walk (30meters) to stray horse trail, it is perfectly situated. Experience the full deal at this property. It offers a wood burning stove. Holy smoke has something for everyone year round!
What makes this property unique
The Big windows in the main living area are great to sit back in front of the wood stove and watch the snow fall or gaze out at the stars. It truly helps you unwind the second you walk in the door and feel like your away from it all, even though your so close to the ski hill, Nickel Plate Nordic Centre, Nickel Plate Lake/ Provincial Park and even Penticton (30 mins away).
