This lakehouse getaway was an absolute delight! The home was spotlessly clean, charmingly quaint, and offered excellent accommodations that made our stay comfortable and memorable. The neighbors were incredibly friendly, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. David, the host, went above and beyond with communication, ensuring every detail was covered. Highly recommend this gem for a relaxing retreat!
Eileen's family were perfect guests. They communicated easily and were helpful when I needed a couple helping hands. They know Stone Lake which is a big plus and I hope that can stay with us again.
What a perfect location! This is a great property on a lovely little lake. Very quiet and a peaceful lake community. Just what we needed to recharge and unwind. We’ll definitely be back! (We don’t want to leave.)

Kelli was the perfect guest and communicated very well during her stay. They took advantage of the attractions in the area and easily recognized the best one. The lake. It's been a favorite of ours with it's laid back environment and friendly, safe community. Welcome back anytime and looking forward to your next stay.
Loved our stay! The house was nicely furnished, clean, and very well equipped with everything we needed to be comfortable. My husband and grandkids had great luck fishing from the dock. The swimming area was shallow and safe for the kids. The lake (and view from the porch) was beautiful! David was easy to reach and very accommodating.
The house was clean, comfortable and had everything you needed to cook with. David has a big closet with plenty of hangers I like that little touch. He really does have all the supplies you need. We especially liked the front porch and the comfortable chairs and pillows. The water is super clear with a sandy bottom. What we didn’t like about it. To rent any of the boats you had to go through PayPal. There’s no other credit option.

I'm glad you enjoyed the property and the amenities. Regarding renting the boats, I appreciate your feedback and will look into other options. I wish I had known so I could have explored them with you . PayPal or cash has always worked in the past as well as Venmo and I hadn't considered the credit option.
We had a wonderful time this past week at the house by the lake. The view from inside the house and the porch looks right out in the lake which is beautiful. I enjoyed swimming and kayaking each day from the dock. Not sure how people with young children would like that the dock is across the street but for me it was fine. Most times there was not much traffic so it was a very, very short trip down the driveway and over to the dock. Everything that we needed was in the house. For just the 2 of us, it was nice and comfy with views of the lake from the main rooms including the master bedroom. We have already discussed going there again. Can't wait! It is definitely a peaceful place apart from the world.
This is our 3rd time renting with Dave and hopefully will not be our last. We absolutely LOVE the location, the front porch which affords a wonderful view of the lake and spectacular sunsets. It's nice to find a rental that is not too big and one we can afford. We are very comfortable while there and feel like we're coming "Home". Over the years, we've become very comfortable with Dave, feeling like he's more of a friend.
Feel free to leave this out of the review . . .
If we could change one thing, it would be the mandatory potential damage fees. After 3 rentals, he knows we are trustworthy, don't drink or smoke and will naturally not damage anything. That would help financially. I suppose it could be a VRBO requirement, but there should be instances where it could be waived.

Carol and cfamily are my favorites. I could almost just give them the key and say enjoy. They have sat and enjoyed the quiet surroundings when some would over look that. Making the physical access for them easy reminds us that someday we'll all need 'no stairs' but still want to experience the setting. Like friends, they are.

Our OK stay
The best part of our stay was the Amish community & seeing their horse ridden carriages everywhere! The rental was quaint. And yes, there is a street that you have to cross to get to your part of the lake which mind you had some a tad aggressive driver's coming through. I was also kind of disappointed that when I specified my son who has Down Syndrome was scheduled to have surgery a day before our scheduled leave which ,unfortunately required us to cut our stay one day short I did not even get an email saying sorry about our situation, not even offered a credit toward another stay for a future stay or even half off for that one day. I get it was a week before our stay that our situation changed beyond our control but, having empathy as opposed to always being about profit speaks volumes..it left a bad impression. David did say we could utilize the paddle boat/kayaks that he does normally charge for free since we were leaving a day earlier. Yes we used paddle boat but the control & rudder were out of sync & impossible to maneuver! We just turned back! I also wish I was informed prior to our stay the policies of what a renter is required to do before we head out. When we were texted in the morning at 10:45 am asking when we would be heading out I told David that we were heading out the door in 2 min, only then did he tell us we were to strip every bed/pillow we used during our stay & put all plugs back in sockets! His reasoning was "O I wasn't sure when we were heading out!" Um you knew we had to cut our vacay one day short so a text the day before would have made sense but, we never got one!! Communication was lacking! Overall, the rental was clean & the view of lake was eye pleasing no doubt. I did keep my cool despite these frustrations! Please buy or bring all your spices and cooking oil if you plan to cook!!

We take our guests comfort and convenience very seriously and the feedback we receive helps us improve our services. The request for stripping beds isn't a requirement just something most guests do without incident. When I ask if a credit or extend an offer of something for free I try to be fair in meeting the needs of all. With COVID we've drawn back on the amount left for all renters for safety
We spent a week at this cozy cabin and it felt like going home to mom's. Very clean, well supplied in all ways, close to local activities, great porch for rain or shine, and beautiful sunsets! Kitchen is supplied with everything you need, including sharp knives! The cabin is not large but there is plenty of space for everything we brought for our own convenience. There are new stainless kitchen appliances and a new washer and dryer. We only used the master bedroom and can say it slept mighty good. David was awesome to work with and promptly answered our questions. Upon leaving, he asked for input to improve the place. Only thing I could come up with is that more washcloths would be helpful, the water is very soft so a bathmat and handicap bar would be safer and the loft stairs may be a bit challenging for for old folks like us. The place is just plain great! We hit the sights in Middlebury and Shipsee but also the Rise N Roll Bakery and dinner with friends at Jay Walkers, at David's suggestion. (Menu is in the basket} Recommend it all! Steaks and peppered bacon from Yoder's Meat and Cheese were great hits, too!
This is an amazing place to relax and enjoy the weather. We had such a great time swimming and fishing. My grandchildren had so much fun that they did not want to leave. David was a wonderful host and made sure our vacation was perfect.

Candace and family enjoyed the lake and cottage by being outside in the water or near it almost everyday. The communication was easy and timely when there were questions and interest in areas around the lake and community. These are the guests we enjoy sharing our lake home with as they respect it as if their own. They welcome back anytime.
Nice peaceful place to enjoy some R&R and shopping if you want to go to town.

Katie and her family were very easy to host and enjoyed the lake from the water and the deck. I invite them to come back anytime and they are welcome to bring family and friends.
We had wonderful weather, and the neighborhood quiet. It does not get much better! Owner was very helpful. The only negatives, which did not affect our stay greatly: the screens on doors and windows are damaged so we could not let in fresh air without letting in bugs and the kayaks/canoes were not something we would choose to use.
The patio is wonderful - fire on the beach and sunset amazing, just all very comfortable.

A couple screens have small tears but most of the windows can be opened. The kayaks and canoe have some miles inn them but are functional albeit not brand new.
We just left beautiful Stone Lake and already miss it. We've enjoyed our stay more than we can express and are already looking forward to next year. Dave is wonderful to work with, and always responded quickly when we needed information. He shared valuable tips about the area and even though we knew it well, we discovered a great new restaurant. Sunset views off the awesome new deck are spectacular. Recommend highly!
Enjoyed our stay. Large deck with a great view of Stone Lake. The sunsets were beautiful. House has everything we needed. Close to Shipshewa and Middlebury. Would stay there again if we're in the area.
This home had it all. The loft space with the three beds was an extra bonus. The two beds in the second bedroom was a nice surprise. Kitchen cabinets were well stocked for all cooking needs. My husband has COPD. He could watch our grandchildren enjoy the dock and the lake from the spacious deck or from the living room window. David was always available for any questions. Would definitely stay again and recommend staying here to friends and family.
This cottage was completely furnished with all the comforts of home.
Lake community lifestyle safe and secure.

Heather and her husband were our last guests of the season. They were easy to communicate with and if there could have been a little less rain it would have been better. We hope to have them back next summer to enjoy the lake and beach.

Peaceful, charming and all the conveniences of home on the lake.
My husband, mom and I just spent a week at this cottage. Very convenient to Shipshewana and other area attractions. The view is beautiful and the cottage had all the comforts that we needed. Dave was very helpful and checked on us during our stay to see if we needed assistance. Mom loved being close enough to family to visit and make many lasting memories. Weather was cooler than we had hoped for Lake use but we plan to return again in summer months to enjoy fishing and boating. If you are looking g for a great home away from home stay and lake as a bonus then I would suggest this place. Thanks Dave and hope to be visiting again soon.

Nice quiet place to relax.
Wife and I spent three days on Stone Lake in September and enjoyed this quiet home. The house was steps from the lake and the large porch had a great view of the sunset. I spent quite a bit of time swimming. The lake deepens gradually and has a sand bottom going out. This would be a great spot for a family to vacation and play in the water all day. It's also close to Goshen and Middlebury if you are looking for brewpubs and restaurants outside the Amish palate. And Shipshewana is right down the road. Owner was easy to deal with.

I'd stay here again!
It was just as advertised. The lake is beautiful, the house is decorated tastefully, the location is near to the Shipshewana sales we came for. My only concerns were relatively minor...The lighting in the kitchen/livingroom is quite dim. And, since we are baby boomers and therefore technologically challenged, we would have liked to be able to watch our favorite shows live. But we could only do that in the master bedroom and then only if we wanted CBS or Fox. There are plenty of things to watch if you're into streaming (which we are not). Dave was very accommodating and spent a lot of time on the phone with my wife trying to make things work. I'm sure those issues will be corrected by the time we want to return.

About the host
Hosted by David Shilharvey
My wife's parents owned a cottage directly behind ours and it's still a mecca for her and her sisters. Many of them have homes around us. Multiple generations have kids, grandkids, weddings in the area. We currently live in Tennessee and love to come back home to Indiana often.
Why they chose this property
The lake is known for its quiet, relaxing environment. There are all sports lakes within easy driving distance if you'd like to enjoy renting a speedboat, jet ski, etc. Our lake is safer and quieter with the 10mph speed limit. The Amish county of LaGrange adds to the back in the country appeal.
What makes this property unique
The largest deck on west side of the lake is the stand out feature. The owner will be at your call to help with questions and make available tips for the area and all questions you have before and during your stay.
