About this property
Secluded Cabin on 132 Acres, 2 Miles to Purgatory Ski Area, Dogs Welcome
Our 1200 Sq ft, 3 bedroom, 3 bath, custom home was completely remodeled in 2013 and offers the most privacy and seclusion of any property near Purgatory as it sits on 132 acres, yet is less then 2 miles from the ski resort and 25 miles from downtown Durango. VRBO Listing 716605 is also on the property (1/4 mile away) and features 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and sleeps 6, if your group is bigger than our 3 bedroom alone can accommodate.
The kitchen is outfitted with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. The main living space features a 46 inch flat screen TV and wood burning fireplace (wood provided).
The master bedroom has a king size bed, the other two bedrooms both have queen beds.
The property borders the Weminuche national Forest on the North and East, which is the largest and most unused wilderness area in the continental U.S. Their are numerous lakes and ponds on the property, and a road to higher elevations where the views of the surrounding mountains and lakes are spectacular. It is common to see bear, deer, elk, big horn sheep, snow shoe hares, ducks, geese, turkey, coyote, marmot, and the occasional mountain lion or moose. All of the pictures in the listing were taken from the property.
A 4WD/AWD with good tires is required December through March. If you plan to drive a vehicle not so equipped, please book elsewhere. Although the roads are extremely well maintained, we want to ensure our neighbors are not adversely impacted by our guests who may not regularly drive on snow packed roads.
Lastly, we love dogs, and they are totally welcome as long as they are well behaved and get along with people and other dogs. Lucy runs free on the property.

Mountain house in a beautiful area close to Purgatory. Comfortable setup in house with three bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Close to Durango for dinners. Nugget Bar is really close with decent food and a lively atmosphere.
We had a wonderful stay and really appreciated how remote and quiet the property was—it made for such a peaceful escape. The views were beautiful and added to the overall relaxing atmosphere. It was also great that there were plenty of extra towels available, which made it easy to bring some along for our trip to the hot springs. The living room furniture was very comfortable and perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. While we didn’t end up using the indoor fireplace, it was a thoughtful touch that wood was provided. We did bring our own fire-starting kindling, but having matches or a fire starter on hand would have made it even easier to use. We were also fortunate there were no fire restrictions during our stay, and we really enjoyed making s’mores at the outdoor fire pit.One thing that would have been helpful is a map of the 132 acres. Since the property is so expansive, it would be nice to know where guests can explore freely without worrying about crossing into other areas.Overall, this was a great place to stay during our road trip to Southern Colorado. The drive into Durango was easy, and we loved spending time downtown, visiting the hot springs, and taking the train to Silverton. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet getaway with beautiful surroundings.
The location was great. The cabin was perfect for us and our adult children, with 3 beds and 3 baths and a nice, well equipped kitchen. The setting was beautiful and we enjoyed the big front porch.
Everything was absolutely perfect and all expectations (which were set pretty high) met. The excellent covered porch, quiet solitude to enjoy nature, loads of firewood ready to use, walking trails and outstanding/thorough access and instructions made this the perfect vacation stay. Many "Thanks" to the owner (Sean) for thinking ahead to meet a clients needs and wants.
Beautiful cabin on beautiful land. Cabin was spotlessly clean, with comfortable beds and a well equipoed, well organized kitchen. The covered porch is perfect for peacefully reading a book or just watching nature. Lots of excellent hiking trails nearby. I will very likely stay here again. My dog & I had a great time.
It doesn't get any better than this! Gorgeous views of Hermosa cliffs with aspens surrounding the cabin. Big surround deck with comfortable outdoor furniture to enjoy the scenery. Well-stocked kitchen. Responsive host.
Loved this house and location. If you want luxury in a secluded house with views out of every window and serenity at your door step this is the place for you. The only car driving to your house will be your own. Sean The host is available for assistance at anytime and is a great host. My dog loved the place too.
Great cabin that is away from it all, so peaceful and relaxing! Would definitely recommend!

About the host
Hosted by Sean McCormack
Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.
Why they chose this property
This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings on the property, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.
What makes this property unique
There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.
