Red Gate Retreat - Nestled In Nature, Walk To Main Street!
>> Please note that your reservation will NOT be confirmed until we talk on the phone. Please pay attention to our VRBO email correspondence and be prepared to talk within 24 hours of your reservation request. <<
GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD WINES, GOOD TIMES Take a well-deserved break, and visit the Red Gate Retreat! Located in the historic gold rush town of Murphys, CA, this fully furnished, 1275 square foot home is a perfect getaway for those who want to make some great memories! With two bedrooms, a loft, and an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings, it’s a cozy place to gather friends and family for precious time together - relaxing, rejuvenating, and enjoying the gold country.
Its unique location is just steps away from Main Street, but nestled in the trees up a sweet country road. The deck in the front invites you to enjoy the “Sheep Shack” vineyard across the road, and the deck in the back invites you to enjoy the oaks, pines, and redwoods that surround the home. The preserved land behind our home is an old gold mine, echoing Murphys’ gold rush history. (Our natural yard and the land behind us is off limits to our guests.)
ALL RENEWED WITH RUSTIC CHARM! The Red Gate Retreat has recently been reincarnated – Everything has been remodeled and renewed in 2015, and new furniture in 2021, perfect for your relaxing retreat from normal life. The home feels cozy yet spacious, with a modern cabin-like charm with its vast windows, interesting angles, vaulted ceilings and skylights. As the remodel progressed, the unique character of the home revealed itself – we call it “clean, industrial, rustic, cottage.” (You have to be there to get it!) PLEASE NOTE: We're sorry, but due to the design of our staircase, our home is NOT suitable for children under 6 years old. Also, our natural yard beyond our decks is off limits.
MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME As soon as you walk in the door, you know you’re going to unwind and enjoy. The entire back of the home is all windows, floor to ceiling, giving you a panoramic view of your perch. The open floor plan allows you to get snacks ready in the kitchen while talking to those clustered at the cement island, as well as those chatting in the living room. You can’t miss the occasional splash of red – just for fun!
The kitchen boasts granite counters, a custom cement island, beautiful birch cupboards, and all new appliances. It’s fully stocked for cooking and eating in, when you don’t want to get out of your slippers.
The spacious living room is the hub of entertainment and relaxation. The gas log fireplace keeps you toasty on chilly mornings and adds the glow to the evening conversation. The 50 inch flat screen TV is "smart" so you can watch your own Netflix (or any other) entertainment, or pick a blue ray DVD from our selection, or simply cuddle up with a good book beside the fire. Of course we have WIFI so you don't have to totally disconnect...unless you want to!
BEDS, BATHS, AND LAUNDRY Both bedrooms have European pillow-top queen beds. The master bedroom’s rustic barn door slides open to reveal its antique metal bed frame and its own en-suite full bathroom with shower. With a whole wall of windows and sliding glass door, you can step right onto the back deck for your first fresh breaths of the day.
The second bedroom is set apart from the rest of the house, allowing a quiet sanctuary, with its own flat screen TV. Up the unique floating staircase, you’ll find the loft. Its bi-fold doors close off the twin trundle and a twin captain’s bed that allow three to sleep comfortably.
The guest bathroom has a shower over a tub and beautiful frosted windows. The new washer and dryer will be handy for those enjoying a longer stay.
COUNTRY ROAD & GOLD RUSH COUNTRY While the inside of the Red Gate Retreat is beautiful, you'll love exploring the historic town of Murphys. Enjoy the 10 minute stroll down the country road to Main Street, and walk in the footsteps of famous Mark Twain, Ulysses S Grant, Horatio Alger and notorious Black Bart. Known as the “Queen of the Sierra,” Murphys was named “One of The Top 10 Coolest Towns in America” by Frommers. Main Street is the heart of this gold rush town - it's lined with a variety of great restaurants, unique shops, and more than 22 wine tasting rooms! Yum!
The community park is just steps away from Main Street. Like a scene from a movie, the gazebo welcomes brides and grooms or live bands, the creek rushes by to the delight of children’s toes, and the barbeque pits host good grill for parties, big and small. Town loves to host several events throughout the year, making Murphys a destination for big celebrations or any relaxing weekend escape from your every-day life.
NEARBY ADVENTURES Most find all they need for a memorable getaway right here and never get in the car until they return home. But if you’re looking for adventures, you can find everything from skiing and biking, to world-famous giant sequoias, to boating and golf, to spectacular caverns, to amazing art and horseback riding, all nearby. At 2,000 feet elevation, Murphys climate is perfect all year round – bright springs, warm summers, crisp falls, and a snow dusting or two in the winter (but never have to scoop one shovel!)
SECURITY Please note that we have exterior security cameras around the perimeter of our home to protect it and you. We check our cameras regularly. We capture recordings only for issues of safety, security, or violation of our policies. We are still fighting the coronavirus. Please take precautions to keep yourselves and others safe and well.
WE'LL TALK TO CONFIRM RESERVATIONS Please be ready to talk on the phone as we confirm your reservation request. We should talk within 24 hours of your tentative confirmation to be sure our home is a good fit. This will help avoid unnecessary cancellations.
LARGER GROUP? Check out our other home, the ROCKY HILL RETREAT (VRBO #397794). It's just a 5-10 minute walk from the RED GATE RETREAT. Walk to Main Street from each of them.
WE LOVE RE-TREATERS! Make the RED GATE RETREAT or the ROCKY HILL RETREAT your favorite getaway, and make it a tradition. We hope to be part of your cherished memories of GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD WINES, AND GOOD TIMES!

Had a great few days here. House is clean, well stocked, and good communal areas and enough space for the four of us. It’s also an easy walk into town which made it perfect when we wanted to stretch our legs, walk to wine tasting, etc. overall was a lovely stay.

About the host
Hosted by Jackie Alcalde Marr
We're Jeff and Jackie (Alcalde) Marr. We love wine tasting (we like to practice, practice practice...!) We were married at beautiful Ironstone Winery on Grape Stomp weekend, so Murphys has a special place in our hearts. Jeff's a mortgage broker, and Jackie's an organization development consultant and leadership & life coach. We live in Folsom and love to do mini getaways to Mendocino, Yosemite, and Tahoe. But of course, our favorite getaway is to Murphys! It's hard to find a place where you feel totally at home (but totally away from home!) We hope you come to enjoy the Red Gate Retreat, stock up special memories, and make it a cherished tradition to come back again and again!
Why they chose this property
Murphys was Jackie's home away from home growing up - her sister has been an integral part of the community for more than 50 years. After getting married in Murphys, we knew we wanted a place of our own, and a place others could enjoy as well. In 2011 we found our Rocky Hill Retreat and completed a total remodel.
Then the home two doors down from Jackie’s sister went up for sale, and we couldn’t resist doing it again! This unique home needed a total remodel – just the kind of project we love. So we rolled up our sleeves, and created the Red Gate Retreat! The two homes are only 5-10 minute walk from each other and from Main Street!
What makes this property unique
While there are so many adventurous activities to enjoy nearby (Calaveras Big Trees, Bear Valley, New Melones Reservoir, Mercer Caverns, golfing, horseback riding, Mercer Caverns, zip lines...gosh, the list goes on and on...), we have to admit, we're pretty lazy. We enjoy hanging out in town and talking with the local shop owners and vintners. It's a wonderful community of interesting people, and we like to count ourselves among them. For us, the best weekend includes coffee on the deck, hours reading beside our gas stove/fireplace, a game and a good movie. When we need to stretch our legs, we love the short walk to Main Street for great food, fantastic wine, and good chat with our friends.
