The house was not just untidy but appeared not to have been cleaned for a very long time. We had to wash all cutlery, crockery, and kitchen utensils before use, while the kitchen, bathrooms, windows, sofas, pillows, and even the beds were dirty. When we raised these concerns, the owner told us she could not clean the house after every guest and that this was one reason for the lower rental price. In our opinion, basic cleanliness should always be expected, regardless of price. Many parts of the house were broken or poorly maintained. The pool became increasingly cloudy, and despite repeatedly asking about the filtration system, our concerns were ignored. The beds were broken with slatted bases and mattresse where worn out,The outdoor lighting did not work, making the terrace unusable in the evenings. The advertised barbecue area was overgrown and filled with rubbish, the wardrobes smelled so strongly that we could not use them, and the upstairs “children’s bedroom” looked more like a dirty storage room. We also had to repair the terrace table before using it, and we fixed the toilet flush ourselves several times. We enjoy staying in older houses with character, but age is no excuse for poor hygiene and lack of maintenance. The property was not in a condition that should have been rented to paying guests. After contacting VRBO, we reached an agreement with the owner and received a 25% refund, which we appreciate, but it does not change our overall experience.
