About the host
Hosted by Kristin O'Connell
Originally from Boston, I moved to Tahoe in my 20's to ski and decided to make it my home base. I continued to return to Cape Cod every summer per my family tradition and still do now with my own children. Shortly after building this dream home, my husband and I started traveling to Costa Rica to surf and rented out our home to pay for our trips. In 2011, we traded in our skis for surfboards and made the full time move to Nosara, Costa Rica. However, the mountains were calling us back, so recently we decided to start spending more time back in Truckee. Since I love creative projects I decided to redecorate and refurnish our entire home with custom furniture imported from Bali. Now we split our time between Truckee, Costa Rica, and Cape Cod.
Why they chose this property
I moved to Lake Tahoe in 1997 years ago and a few years later bought my first home just a few streets over from this property. I used to hike the trails and when I saw that there was land for sale I jumped at the opportunity. I built this house years ago and it was my ultimate dream project. I wanted to build something modern and different than the typical cabin but that still felt like a mountain home. I loved creating a different look using many different materials like steel, concrete, glass and fir wood. I feel it has a unique yet timeless style and more so now with the new decor and interior design. The new furnishings are antique and custom made teak furniture from Bali which offer an eclectic and Bohemian style that blends nicely with the modern features. I absolutely love it, I hope you do too!
What makes this property unique
I love entertaining and this home was built to have friends and family come and enjoy the mountains. It was built with the intention of providing a spacious and relaxed retreat feeling and a place where you never wanted to leave. Since the upstairs family room and second master have large doors, it feels like a separate apartment. This is great for sharing the house with another family or letting children or teenagers have their lounge area without hearing them! The downstairs great room is my favorite to just stare out the windows and get lost in the peacefulness of the trees. Nearly every window looks out to huge ponderosa pine trees. The kitchen is my absolute favorite and if you like to cook you will love all the space, 2 dishwashers, and my special treat...a steam oven! The extra large island has 5 chairs around it so you can hold court while cooking, and still socialize with others in the living and dining areas. We have had many great holidays here! I hope you enjoy our home as much as we do!
