About this property
Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs!
Luxurious, custom-designed and built private home with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large recreation room in the finished basement downstairs, hand-built furniture and stone fireplace designed by owner, and a magnificent view of the surrounding foothills, pasturelands and Pintlar Mountain Range of the Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness Area in southwestern Montana.
Ours is a single-level house with vaulted ceilings and a finished basement. There is now a ramp for easy accessibility. Amenities include internet WiFi access, streaming netflixs etc.. TV, an indoor jacuzzi in the master bedroom, air conditioning, a pool table, Foosball table, wood-burning chiminea, propane barbecue, a large yard and sheltered patio area, and plenty of space for parking your RV or trailers.
If you decide to bring your horses, we have a barn and a five acre paddock to help make them comfortable.
With only a five minute drive to Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, you can enjoy dining, golf, a relaxing spa day, or take a walk along the Copperway Trail that helps link Butte and Anaconda together in an east-west route through Durant Canyon. Unfortunately only Fairmont guests can use the swimming pools. Thirty minutes from the house, the Mt. Haggin Wildlife Management and Recreation Area offers an abundance of sporting and recreational opportunities, depending on the season, including hiking, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.
If your tastes are inclined toward history, you can explore Butte and Anaconda, which, together, form the nation’s largest National Historic Landmark District; or visit the beautifully restored 19th Century buildings and attractions of Philipsburg, or the vintage car museum or the old prison in Deer Lodge less than an hour away. Numerous ghost towns dot the area, and up at the 10,000 foot level of the nearby wilderness area, the crest of the Anaconda-Pintlar Range helps form a small part of the American West’s spine that is the Continental Divide. If you’re lucky, and careful, you might even spot some white-tail deer, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, elk or perhaps other wildlife while you’re out on a hike or a drive.
Go for a scenic drive past Georgetown Lake, or downhill skiing at Discovery Basin, take a Trolley Tour or one of the guided walking tours of Butte's historic district, visit the Mining Museum, take a drive over Mill Creek Pass, visit the Big Hole Battlefield, enjoy the falls at Lost Creek State Park, get your license and fish one of Montana’s blue ribbon trout rivers or streams, or schedule your visit to coincide with Evel Knievel Days or the Montana Folk Festival.
An abundance of historic and recreational activities await your visit, and so do we. If possible, we’d like to be there when you arrive so we can help you get acquainted with our house. If this is not possible, then please give us a call so we can let you know where the key is.
The attached garage is not available for guests, but there’s plenty of room for parking in the driveway.

We no longer offer an outside hot tub, but the Jacuzzi tub in bedroom is awesome!

About the host
Hosted by Russ and Lisa Scherman
It all started with my great-great grandfather, Hans Henry Peterson, who immigrated from Germany in 1880 and homesteaded a portion of the land that eventually became the family ranch where I grew up. Hans was known locally as the “Sauerkraut King” for his particular sauerkraut, which he cooked with his specific recipe from all of the harvested cabbage! The barrels of sauerkraut were hauled to butcher shops by horse and wagon. From these humble beginnings, he and his children, and theirs, on down to my parents, and the thirteen of us who are their children, built up what is today a successful, multi-generational working ranch. My mother and each of my twelve siblings and their families still live close by!
My husband, Russ, and I built our own beautiful home where we did so we could raise our children and enjoy all the area has to offer, and still be near our large extended family. We have had so many memorable family gatherings around skiing, hiking, fishing, picnicking, snowmobiling, hunting, horseback riding, exploring ghost towns, and following scenic routes on drives that yield one breathtaking view after another. We want to keep our home in our family, and also share its beautiful sunsets and homey atmosphere with those special people who wish to come be our guests here and enjoy our little corner of the world.

Why they chose this property
My husband, Russ, and I chose this site both for the beautiful scenery surrounding it, and its accessibility. Our home is one mile away from the main ranch house where my mother still lives and all the hands gather for lunch, and just a few minutes from Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, where we like to go for regular swims. Russ is in construction, and I taught school in Anaconda, so the location could not have been better for our work. It is also conveniently located only a couple minutes from Interstate 90 (I-90), which is the main artery we take to Butte, Bozeman, Billings, the Dakotas, Missoula, Spokane, Seattle, or the I-15 junction that threads the Canadian border with the Mexican border and all the U.S. towns and parks between. Yet even with such proximity to Interstate access, the property is still quiet and feels secluded.
What makes this property unique
My husband, Russ, designed our beautiful home, as well as several of its furniture pieces, and the stone fireplace. Russ has excellent taste and a keen eye for combinations of material, lines of sight and detail, so our home is rustic, but also classy and elegant. Each window offers a uniquely beautiful view. In fact, with the contours of southwestern Montana’s landscape as a backdrop, all the views, whether from the inside or out of doors, are incredible and change constantly, depending on the light and time of day. Yet, from our place, one can be in any one of several nearby towns within fifteen minutes to an hour, or at the trailhead to a recreation area or local park in similar time. This unique combination of magnificent views and convenient accessibility adds to the overall relaxing feel of being on retreat, nestled into a quiet location.
