About this property
Private Creekside Calhoun Homeplace Cabin Close to Grandfather Mountain
This rustic pioneer old homeplace has been passed down through 4 generations of the Calhoun Family. It sits creek side along banjo branch and is perfect for a quick getaway with plenty of privacy and tranquility. Located just 1mile to town, groceries, restaurants, CVS and more. We have preserved and protected this property in a beautiful hollow filled with laurels, rhododendrons, and native fauna with dirt gravel roads throughout the hollow. There are many streams' creeks, and springs that flow throughout the property with a large creek called "Banjo Branch" and waterfall flowing directly in front of the home in the front yard. I encourage our guests to paint a rock and hide it in the creek for others to find while playing in the water or searching for Gold and Gems. We also have walking trails and a scavenger hunt in the guest book and encourage exploring our property.
Our Family home place is over 100 years old built in the late 1890's by my great-grandfather, Starlin Calhoun. It is one of the oldest homesteads still in operation in Avery County, NC.
It has a master bedroom downstairs with a Queen Size bed. Upstairs their is (2) Queen Beds and (3) Twin Beds.
There is (1) full bathroom with a walk-in shower and (1) half bathroom both downstairs. I provide towels and wash cloths for guests and all Linens are provided as well. The cabin has a full Kitchen with electric stove/oven, all utensils, pots, pans, dishes, 10 cup coffee maker, a Keurig coffee maker, blender, toaster, microwave, refrigerator, and automatic dishwaher. The Den has an electric Organ, soap stone wood burning fireplace, Cable Direct TV 100+ channels, WIFI internet service, and board games from old and new eras. The cabin is Heated by the fireplace, electric heaters & baseboard heaters. NO AC, it's Air conditioned by Nature with open windows/screens and fans. (it rarely gets above 70 here). There is a covered front porch with rockers and bench seating to listen to the sounds of the creek & waterfall in the front yard, and a tin roof for the sounds of the rain to lull you to sleep, outdoor fire pit, charcoal grill, quite peaceful and secluded on a gravel road. **** Four Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive is needed in winter months and snow season (Oct. - Mar.) to get to the cabin and to drive on the roads up here! *** We offer lots of roads and trails for walking, hiking, and exploring. We have made many memories to last a lifetime here while getting back to basics of life and finding the meaning of Self Serenity. If your looking for new and modern this is NOT IT! The cabin is made of wood and bark, covered with a Tin roof, has a 40 year old honey comb bee hive between the old wooden chimney and newer stone chimney and has a woodsy musky odor at times. (We have attempted to get rid of the bees in the chimney now and so far so good! No honeybees now.) Nonetheless, it's still a place of peace and quiet that you can't get anywhere else. I take great pride in making sure that the place stays properly cleaned, sanitized and treated for each guests prior to their arrival. However, with wooden floors, wooden walls, being in the woods, and so forth there is going to be the occasional cobweb, bee, mouse, boomer, moth or bug that sometimes reappear somewhere during your visit. We do have an exterminator that treats the home on a regular monthly schedule. This place is like stepping back in time to a simpler era where phones were not invented, family meant everything, and conversation was essential to our lives. If you ever visited a farm house, or had relatives that grew up in a rural setting you will appreciate this cabin and it's roots. If your a city mouse with champagne dreams and caviar wishes this will disappoint you. I'm sorry.
Almost everyone that visits can't wait to come back and we now have several families that have made this spot their annual tradition for bonding and escaping from the real world. People either love it or they hate it. Everybody is different in their expectations of a vacation rental cabin.
We hope you enjoy it's rich history, unique character, rustic charm and down to earth simplicity as much as we have over the last 100 years and look forward to sharing our little piece of heaven with you too.

About the host
Hosted by Nancy Calhoun Thomason
We are the Calhoun family. This property was the birthplace of my grandfather, Coye Calhoun. He grew up there the only boy out of 9 children. Starlin Calhoun, my great grandfather, built this house in the late 1890's. His family of brothers all owned this Calhoun hollow that we live in, There is over 200 acres in Calhoun Hollow owned by the siblings of the Calhoun Brothers. The Calhoun's played an important role in our history of the Tweetsie railroad. They helped to build this railroad and worked on it right her in our hollow. In fact my driveway down in front of the Old Toe River was the Tweetsie Railroad bed when it was running. Today the Tweetsie Train can be experienced and enjoyed by familes of all ages in Blowing Rock just miuntes from here at the Tweetsie Railroad Amusement park. We proudly preserve the property and share it with you to enjoy a piece of history and God's country.
Why they chose this property
This home is over 100 years old. It was built by my great grandfather, then passed down to his only son, Coye Calhoun. In 1970 Coye sold the property to two Doctor brothers from Florida. They owned the cabin as their mountain vacation home for years. In the early 1990's my father, Doyle Calhoun had the opportunity to buy it back from the Vildibill's. We have owned it ever since and have turned it into our vacation rental and family fun place to escape reality and rat race of the world. It is rustic and vintage in appearance and furnishings, however, it is also a lot of fun to revert back to your imagination and creativity to keep you entertained while staying here. There is NEWLY ADDED Cable TV, WIFI Internet Service, CD player and an Electric organ for your entertainment. It has a soap stone fireplace that burns real wood, a tin roof, two porches for relaxing on, a creek with waterfall in the front yard that my ancestors used to bathe in before indoor plumbing.
The original out house is on site, original barn, grainery, and smoke house out buildings on the property. Only the cabin is opened to the public for use and enjoyment. We have a Christmas tree farm on the property too that my father has ran since the late 90's. At Thanksgiving and Christmas I like to decorate the cabin accordingly and offer my guests a chance to learn how to make a wreath or pick out a real tree to take home for the holidays.
We are centrally located in the town of Newland just 10 minutes to Grandfather Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. 25 minutes to Beech Mountain, Boone, Appalachian Ski Resort, ASU, Blowing Rock, Linville Gorge, Linville Caverns and Roan Mountain State Park in TN. Watauga Lake in Butler TN is also a great place for families and fun just 30 minutes from us. The mountains always offer LOTS to do and see. Come experience a magical, memory filled, majestic vacation with us in the heart of God's country Avery county North Carolina.

What makes this property unique
The natural sounds of running water are most relaxing. We have a bon fire pit as well as charcoal grill for cook outs. The house has a musky woodsy smell to it. It is after all an old farm house that lacks nothing including character. Warning unique history and extinction to the cabin: The chimney rock was added on in the early 70's. Since then there has been a honey bee hive develop over the years in the chimney between the rock and the original exterior of the cabin chimney. The honey bees are against the law to kill and would destroy the cabins chimney all together at a very high cost to remove them. Therefore, if you are allergic to bees this is not for you. They usually do not bother you or get inside the house. The Boomer Squirrel is also a resident at the cabin. This is a little red squirrel that is also extinct and lives in the attic of the cabin. Sometimes you will hear them in the walls. They are scared of people so you will not see them just hear them. We do sometimes have mice and spiders in the cabin but try and control them with mice control and frequent exterminating schedules. After all this is a 100 year old house with wooden walls, floors and on a rock foundation in the woods surrounded by nature.
