About this property

Ancient Roman Village House with Roof Terrace

La Belle Ancienne (Ancient Beauty) is nestled in the quaint village of Assignan (936 AD), built on a hill near St Chinian, in the heart of a region steeped in history, as well as wine: the Languedoc. Exposed stonework, large wooden beams, a classic winding staircase from cellar to roof terrace, fireplace, marble sink and original tiles preserve the antiquity and charm of its medieval character. Though authentically restored, you will find modern comforts, such as deluxe bedding and towels, French press, smart tv (internet only) and dvd player. To the north from Assignan, you'll see the Montagne Noire and to the south, the Pyrenees. Wandering through landscapes of vineyards whilst enjoying the scents of lavender, rosemary and thyme, you are on the edge the Parc Natural du Haut Languedoc, with its majestic views. Hiking, cycling, canoeing and horse riding are only a few of the many activities in the area.

About the host

I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US - in Washington State - where the land is lush but completely opposite from the sunny climate in southern France. I wear many hats - most of them connecting to the arts (musician, composer, audio engineer, graphic artist and gardener).

Why they chose this property

Being a musician allows me the freedom to travel extensively on my own time and initially provided the impetus to find this lovely retreat in the south of France. The people here are so warm and friendly; the language is beautiful; the scenery is spectacular; the history is amazing; the food superb... I could go on and on!
I chose Assignan because of its tranquility. The village, which sits high on a hill, has an energy that I find easy to create in. I can understand why some of the great artists came to the Languedoc - it is a magical place indeed.

What makes this property unique

When stepping outside the house you only need to walk a few minutes to be in the beauty of the countryside; the many vineyards that surround Assignan go in every direction. You can find dolmens and other ancient artifacts along your journey whilst catching a spectacular view of the Pyrenees or Montagne Noire.
The village itself boasts several 'caves' - some organically produced.
