About this property

Beach Front House, Msambweni, Kenya South Coast

A rare combination of attractions is found along the 2km near-empty sandy beach, lapped by the warm Indian Ocean. The balcony is the perfect place for relaxing, from early morning tea to sundowners at sunset. Chale Reefs is a comfortable, fully-staffed, family house situated on a vast white sandy beach in the far south of Kenya. Spend your days swimming in the sea or the pool, snorkelling, fishing, playing tennis, reading from the well-stocked shelves, bird watching and, if you are lucky, watching newly hatched turtles make their first dangerous journey down to the sea. Visit the colourful market in Msambweni, the traditional village down the beach and wonder at the shellfish, barracuda, snapper delivered to the door on a daily basis by local fishermen. Chale Reefs is a stunning setting for a memorable holiday which can be as active or as relaxing as you want.

Wonderful, relaxing stay!

No words can describe the charm and beauty of Chale Reefs, the pictures on the website do not do it justice. The house is large and spacious with stunning views over the gardens and the sea. The beach literally feels like an extension of the garden, and is nearly always totally empty. The staff were excellent, helpful and friendly and Bakari could not do enough to help and show us around the local villages. The pool and tennis court are great and there is a great book selection around the house. It is the perfect place to unwind and relax, with lots of area's to sit both inside the house, on the balcony and outside. The bathrooms are quite old and the water pressure unpredictable but overall the house has a charm that is impossible to describe unless you actually stay there. we would definitely think of going back in the future.

We built Chale Reefs, our family holiday home, 31 years ago. Since then we have tried to make it an attractive place for relaxation and fun on this beautiful unspoiled beach. We are delighted it is now being enjoyed by others. The renovations of the bathrooms starts this November and new showers to try to improve the water pressure have already been purchased.

Very tranquil - loved it!!

We had 7 glorious days at Chale Reefs. The staff were all excellent and the cook - Wima - prepared some amazing meals. We walked along the beach in the mornings, swam in the ocean and the pool. Read a lot and generally did not a lot and we both feel better for it. A walk along the beach to the village is well worth the effort to see the friendly locals in their own environment. Would we go again? Of course we would!!!

About the host

Hosted by Judith Lindgren

Host profile image
When the owner retired from an international company in 1986, after 20 years of living in Kenya, the family wanted to retain a connection with this wonderful country and its people. By chance they came upon Msambweni and were at once taken by its relative remoteness and lack of tourist development. The beach was very uncrowded then and remains so now. The whole family was excited by the idea of building a house on the beach and the house was completed in 1988. Chale Reefs is regularly visited by the family, including the five grandchildren, who now live in the UK. We support village efforts particularly the voluntary Msambweni Orphans Programme and an educational charity set up by our daughter (www.etatu.org.uk)

Why they chose this property

The beauty and peace of the beach and the friendliness of the people and the staff at Chale Reefs.

What makes this property unique

The beach, the people, the family-friendly facilities, the tennis court and pool, the air conditioning in one room, the fresh fish from the sea.
