About this property

Old, Traditional, Charentaise House, Peaceful Vineyard Location

Hi and welcome to 'Woodsmoke'. This is a charming 3 bedroom old traditional 'Charentaise' house situated right in the middle of 'Pineau wine' vineyards and sunflowered fields. We are located 2km from the centre of the village of Saint Romain de Benet, near the busy market town of Saujon halfway between the coastal resort of Royan and the ancient Roman city of Saintes. We offer weekly breaks (length of stay negotiable outside high season). The house possesses two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom, two bathrooms, spacious traditional style fully-equipped kitchen, large lounge and dining-room. This is the perfect 'getaway from it all' in a 'home from home' location. Perfectly positioned to explore the stunning Atlantic white sandy beaches and islands, marshes, the wine regions of Cognac and Bordeaux among sunflower fields and Charente Maritime's numerous Romanesque and medieval villages and markets.

The house had everything we wanted and is in a superb location to visit that area of France which has so much to offer. We filled 10 days, with ease.

Lovely place to stay

Great house with real character, quiet and out in the sticks, but only 5 minutes from a supermarket and 25 minutes from a beach. Really nice garden with shade and sun and lots of seating. Everything we could need in the kitchen. What's not to like about this place

Cuckoo

As quiet and peaceful as we remembered the cottage. Very handy location if you need a more active environment. Yes you can hear a cuckoo in the forest!

Lovely Charentais House

The owner was very helpful and gave clear instructions about checking in. The owner kindly left us a bottle of wine and there were instructions about the the house which was also helpful. The house is lovely, three large bedrooms with a beautiful garden. Although it was April we had some great sunshine and were able to eat outside. The house is very comfortable and there is a bathroom downstairs as well as upstairs which was very useful with our young boys. We had a great holiday and will return. Thank you Andy.

As advertised, this is a traditional Charentais village home with original features and sympathetic contemporary additions in a lovely quiet hamlet overlooking a vineyard. We slept very comfortably and enjoyed breakfasts on the East facing terrace. The weather was a little variable during our 12 night stay, so evening meals were split between the very practical kitchen dining space and the terrace, with sundowners in the garden by the fishpond. We enjoyed the company of bats in the evenings and Hoopoes in the mornings and some wonderful sunsets from the kitchen window. Everything we needed for cooking and dining was provided. Location was perfect for access to the Cote Sauvage beaches, we particularly recommend La Plage de la Bouverie just North of La Palmyre, and the Super U supermarket at Saujon is the best in the area and just a few minutes from the gîte.Overall a very enjoyable stay and excellent value.

Good - once we managed to gain access..

No word from owner on getting keys in days leading up to arrival despite him saying he would contact us, so we assumed he'd be there to meet us. Not so; he wasn't there. Eventually found keys and gained access. House is pleasant but feels unloved; several lights broken; landline ("for emergencies") was disconnected and hand set broken; don't know if heating system (supposed to cut in below 20 degrees) actually works, There's loads of possible local cycling (boulangeries, fromagerie, honey seller, Abbaye at Sablonceaux) but we were only able to do that having brought our own pump for the tyres. We found puncture repair kit and tyres leavers but no pump. Notwithstanding the above we enjoyed our 8 days there - just felt it was let down by the above and especially no word from the owner on finding the keys.

My apologies it was the end of the season/ I always phone up every person before they arrive this time I had got sidetracked. I would have been available on the phone or by email if you had wanted to give me a nudge in the days leading up, and would have replied very quickly as we had done together in the weeks leading up to your stay. The heating system does work perfectly well but I don't for the moment rent out over the winter months and you would not need the heating system in September (I hope). The telephone is not for use by people staying, everyone has a mobile now if there are emergencies. There was a pump available in the garage but maybe it hadnt been put back by previous holiday makers. Its an old house but which has received over 45k euros of investment in the last 18 months. It sounds like you enjoyed the rest of it and all the other postive sides it has to offer - come back and stay anytime should you want! kind regards

Maison impeccable.

Not recommended

The kitchen was so dirty that it took my wife 4 hours to clean it. The living room was dark as one door was nailed shut. The Wohle house gives a run down unkempt impression. The driveway is very difficult for a larger car. We left the house after 2 days and looked for an alternative accommodation. All in all, the holiday Home is not to be recommended.

I am sincerely touched to read this comment. Shortly before you arrived, one of the window panes of the French window opening onto the terrace was unfortunately broken, the intervention to replace it was only possible after the summer, so I was obliged to partition off this opening. I must admit that the comfort of a living room overlooking the terrace has been removed. That's why I had alerted you before your stay. For information, all the openings of the house are new since the month of March 2023; brand new windows and doors and in May there will be a new roof. Concerning the cleaning, I was also let down somewhat by the person who is in charge of this part, I apologize for that, I reacted accordingly on this point on my side. This is also the reason why I have refunded you a part of your stay. The pleasure and comfort of the people who come and trust me is of utmost importance. I am sorry that your stay disappointed you. It is in a beautiful and pleasant Charentaise house that you can stay, the region is full of treasures to visit. I will do my best to welcome you in the best possible way. Andy.

Great Private Property

Situated on the edge of a vineyard, the garden was large and private. Our 2 German shepherds loved running around the garden. Andy had secured the perimeter for us by installing a temporary fence. The house was as described and was exactly what we expected. 15 to 20 min drive to some lovely secluded beaches and close to supermarket in Saujon for everyday shopping. We cooked every night and found the kitchen was really well appointed. I didnt find that it was missing any equipment I required. The fridge and freezer were large and the oven was easy to use and very efficient. The booking process was made easy by Andy who telephoned me at home and we discussed all of the arrangements in that manner. Really happy with our stay and would book again.

Kust & binnenland Charente
