The garden is completely enclosed and private and is mainly lawned with generous terracing around the pool and a separate patio area with a built-in barbecue ideal for al-fresco dining. The property, with decor and furnishings in a rural French style, affords comfortable and spacious accommodation for a family to enjoy the delights of the French countryside. The cottage is in a small quiet hamlet surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields. Walks and cycle routes are on the doorstep; bike hire can be arranged from the cottage with delivery and pick up available. Only a short drive away are the nearest sandy beaches at Meschers and St Georges de Didonne, with the popular tourist resort of Royan only 20 mins away. The nearest village, at Arces-sur-Gironde, boasts a recommended Epicerie and Depot de Pain where you can also enjoy a drink on the terrace and sample the local wines. The nearest supermarket is at Cozes, a 10 minute drive away, where you will also find a weekly market, banks, shops, bars, restaurants and pharmacies.

We live in North Yorkshire, England but have always loved holidaying in France with our twin daughters and over many years have explored a number of regions. We kept coming back to this part of Charente-Maritime so decided to buy our own home here and it has become our ‘retreat’ , where we have shared many memorable holidays with friends and family.

Why they chose this property

Arces is a small village among a friendly farming community and benefits from an excellent bar/restaurant and ‘epicerie’ and the workshop of a local artisan sculptor. It's such a relaxing place to spend time, in a tranquil rural setting amid fields and vineyards and yet only a very short distance from some of the best beaches in France. And with lots of opportunities close by to get involved in a wide range of activities including horse riding, golf, cycling, walking and all the water sports you can think of! And the resorts of Royan and La Rochelle, towns steeped in history like Saintes and Cognac, the beautiful Ile d’Oleron and the city of Bordeaux all a short drive away.

Or within a short cycle ride are some beautiful sandy beaches and the port at Meschers, with bars, restaurants and shops, the picturesque Romanesque 12th century church at Talmont and the busy market town of Cozes. And a short drive gets you into the wine-growing region of Bordeaux boasting some of the finest wines in the world or the prime Oyster and Mussel beds at Marennes-Oleron if your tastes are more gastronomic!
