The Garden Wing in the village of Nether Stowey in the Quantock Hills Somerset
A property full of character situated on the ground floor. It has a double bed room with french doors opening onto a private patio area, perfect for that sun drenched breakfast overlooking the garden. It has a bathroom with bath and shower, a loo and wash basin. The large sitting room has an open fire inglenook ideal for those romantic, cosy nights in. The cottage is attached to the Old House which is the main dwelling but has its own independent access and privacy. The area is popular with walkers and the village sits at the foothills of the Quantock Hills, the first to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England. It is also centrally positioned for the local attractions and as we are only 9 miles from the M5 it is easy to venture further afield. Nether Stowey boasts its connection with Coleridge and Wordsworth who are credited with being the founders of the Romantic Movement. In fact some of Coleridge's poems were written in the house library or garden. The property has an acre (2.5 ares) of walled garden in which our guests can enjoy, recline in the loungers or just sit in the shade of the gazebo. It is no wonder that the poets gained inspiration from this delightful spot. Exmoor National Park is just 30 mins away and the delightful villages of Porlock Weir and Dunster are popular destinations. Kilve Beach just 4miles away is on the North Somerset a Jurassic coast and fossils are abundant! The old port of Watchet is 20 mins away and a lovely place to visit in the evenings and wander around the two harbours, There are great walks to enjoy, all easy, moderate standard with fantastic views to enjoy across the Severn Estuary toward Wales, and across to Glastonbury and the Mendip Hills ,Blackdown Hills and Exmoor. You will be spoilt. The Coleridge Way starts at Nether Stowey and crosses the Macmillan Way as well as the Two Moors route. There is so much on offer. For those not so mobile there are plenty of alternatives such as the city of Wells with its wonderful Cathedral and Bishops Palace, Glastonbury Tor and the caves of Cheddar and Wookey. Retail therapy can be met at Clark's Village in Street and several National Trust homes to visit all within easy reach. A week will not be enough !

Lovely place to spend a few days away to relax in front of the grand fireplace! Nice large space for two people. The bed was lovely and comfortable.
However, the WIFI is hit and miss so don't rely on it if you need to work.
Driving through the small gate into the gravelled parking area revealed an impressive building set in tranquil gardens. First impressions - Tick. The Garden Wing was extremely comfortable and spacious and gave us a great base to explore the area. After a hard day sightseeing and exploring it was a delight to return and enjoy the late afternoon waning sun with a cold beer and a good book in the garden.
Anne and Manor treated us like old friends and were ready to impart local knowledge to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
If you are exploring the coastline or traveling more inland, this is a great base to stay.

One owner spoilt our overall experience
Our rating would have been higher were it not for the attitude of one of the owners. Property was nice and comfortable and we had a warm welcome from Manor who was kind and helpful. We were surprised to discover on arrival that main dwelling is a B&B so in the Garden wing you are not only sharing access and garden with owners you share with B&B guests. There is also a self catering outbuilding adjacent (owners sandwiched in middle). Access to B&B is right next to our door so you can hear comings and goings as well as people above. This is not explained on HomeAway advert. As dog owners we discovered on arrival that dogs need to be kept on a lead in garden at all times. Covid guidance apparently. Fair enough but would have been good to know before we booked.
We had not met the other half of operation (presumably Manor's wife) all week but were ambushed by her on our final day. Our dog is 15 years old and on his last legs. We broke a rule snd decided to leave him for a couple of hours to rest whilst we went shopping. We had noticed a decline in his mobility on the holiday. Mrs Manor made her presence felt on our return in reprimanding us for this. Her hostility continued the next morning when she inspected the property in silence without a word to us. When we suggested that information on property and dogs should be on website or made clear during booking process her response was rude, defensive and arrogant. We were told it was our fault for not asking questions before we came! She didn't think us not knowing it was a b&b mattered. Staggering. Well it clearly mattered to us and Mrs Manor clearly has no people or customer service skills! Lesson for owners: being transparent and enabling people to make an informed decision on whether it is the place for them means that people know what to expect and can have no complaints :)

Sadly we feel this review says more about the reviewer than it does the owner as unfortunately house rules were not accepted or respected. Hopefully our fourteen years of positive comments will help to paint the true picture of the way we welcome and enjoy our visiting guests.
Pleasant accommodation overall ,however Settee has seen better days ! We were made to feel very welcome by Manor and Anne who could not have been more helpful . Great location lovely village .
A heritage listed property faithfully maintained, with An astonishingly beautiful garden

Blissful
I stayed in the Garden Wing in early September. It’s a little piece of heaven! A complimentary cream tea awaited us together with milk, butter and a loaf of bread. The accommodation is very comfortably furnished with lovely touches throughout, a super comfy bed and a spacious bathroom with plentiful hot water. Fresh figs from the garden (which is a glorious space) courtesy of Anne, were a very welcome bonus. Would not hesitate to recommend. Thank you Manor & Anne for a lovely stay.

Beautiful private wing of manor house
This was a great base from which to explore the North Somerset coast and countryside and all the lovely walks. Manor and Ann were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I stayed with my 2 cockapoos who also loved it and in particular the stunning garden (although not totally secure for the dogs). A great find!

About the host
Hosted by Manor Scourfield
We were both Headteachers and retired early to change our lifestyle. We purchased The Old House in 2007 and have spent quite some time in upgrading this Grade 2 listed building dating back to the mid 1700s. Ann's hobby is the garden which she spends a lot of money on making it her own! The garden is about an acre (2.5 ares) walled and very sheltered. You can sit in it ( if we had more time ) and not believe you are in the centre of the village. WE do not plan to retire for quite a few more years as we both enjoy it too much.
Why they chose this property
The history, the peace and quiet and the wonderful garden. We also very much enjoy our guests who share our enthusiasm. We see ourselves more as custodians of this place rather than owners.
What makes this property unique
We share this house with friends, family and guests. We enjoy a lifestyle many could only dream of. We are very fortunate and feel lucky to have the experience.
