The location is perfect for looking into hanging out with locals. Its well situated near everything. Only issue we had was the neighbors and their dogs barking sometimes late at night.
Overall property was nice with some beautiful elements like hard wood floors, nice decor, beautiful deck and bathrooms, etc. There are a few drawbacks - sofas and bedding a bit dated, noisy AC (and note only AC in bedrooms; living room, dining and kitchen can get quite warm), and a musty smell in second bedroom.
If you’re looking for a relaxing Bajan neighborhood experience, this is the perfect place. The patio is so delightful…we spent most of the time outdoors. One night I looked down and a tiny frog was sitting next to me. It can be a bit tricky to find the first time due to Google Maps inaccuracy, but easy to find if you take Dayrell road. Highly recommend…lovely stay.

The property is well taken care of. We had no issues with noise. The trees and plants surrounded us with beauty, with view of the sea. 10 minute walk to beach and could walk, take bus or ZR easily. Great stay
We loved this property. Neighborhood location with distant view of the sea from upper patio. The place was spacious and sunlit! Fans and AC. Walking distance to beach and restaurants!

This was our 2nd stay at Somnia. It's a lovely haven 10 minutes up from the beach in the fantastic neighbourhood of Navy Gardens. The property management is excellent, the place is clean and as advertised. The 2nd floor outdoor terrace is a game-changer. The only thing to be aware of is that it's a bit of an uphill trek (10-15 minutes) from the beach and shops if you don't have a car. Anette is the housekeeper who comes in weekly and she is lovely.

Dear Ren,
Thanks very much for your review. We're so glad you both enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.
We had a really lovely stay at Ian's place - it's comfortable and very well-equipped, with a fabulous terrace. Only a 10 minute walk to the beach but a decent supermarket is about 30 mins walk away, so a car is probably advised for some people. Communication with the hosts was great - they were really helpful and responded quickly. Thank you ;)

Dear Lucy,
Thank you very much for your review. We would love to have you back.
My family and I spent a lovely 10 days at Somnia. Very relaxing, perfectly located, and with all the amenities of home. The only suggestion I have is to put a non-slip shower mat in the master bathroom. It was otherwise perfect! I would definitely book again. Communication with Trudi was also amazing.

Dear Lauren,
Thank you very much for your kind review. We have asked Trudi to provide a non-slip shower mat in the master bathroom as requested. Best wishes.
We loved our stay in Ian and Cecily‘s apartment! The apartment itself is very comfortable and suitable for a couple and friends. It is well appointed and has everything you need for self catering. We particularly loved their second-story terrace, which is huge and surrounded by plants and trees. Ian was extremely flexible and communicative during our process. Trudi, the property manager, and Annette, the cleaner, and Richard, the groundskeeper, were all fabulous. It’s located in a very quiet and safe neighborhood, and we will be sure to come back.

We stayed here in upper level for 10 days of our vacation and had friends join us. Above and beyond, pictures do not do it Justice for space, cleanliness and comfort. Has beach modern decor, air works great in bedrooms. Only improvement could be adding air to living room, but was not a big deal or concern. Had an outside issue which was not our hosts fault but they were on it to ensure it was quickly resolve and treated us to a wonderful Bajan lunch. They are very attentive!!
Location is perfect, 10 min quick to main road and Blakey’s restaurant on the Boardwalk. 10 min by car to Pebbles Beach. Sue’s Market is a quick 5 min walk and she has everything you can think of!! Wonderful lady!!
Jump on ZR for 3.50 BBD to the Gap.
Will not hesitate to come back!

We had no hot water to shower or wash up with.Trouble with the a/c. Had to sleep in the L.R.Bathroom fixture above the sinks had a broken bulb. All ceiling fixturers in need of cleaning. No screens on the windows. Lots of flies and birds in apt.The outside grounds were not kept up. Lots of debris. No garden to relax in as advertised.Poor painting job on the lanai.Laundry outside in a shed.A small quick wash took one hour.Could not find the garden area as advertised, only broken lawn chairs and a pile of rubbish.we had rented three vrbo apts in Rome, Venice and Florence. They were gorgeous. We were very disapointed with this rental and may think twice about doing it again. Not worth the price we paid.Live and learnThere was no hot water for showers or washing up.Main bathroom light fixture bulb broken. Ceiling light dirty with bugs as well as the rest .No screens on the windows. Lots of flies and birds coming in..
We stayed at Somnia for the month of February. The house is divided into two spacious apartments. While we stayed in the upper apartment, I did get the chance to see the lower one (which is equally as lovely as upstairs). Our accommodation consisted of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a very well equipped kitchen and a large dining/sitting room area that opened up onto a huge deck that was surrounded on three sides by trees and shrubs of all kinds. Because of the house’s fairly high location, the deck captured the soft breezes, a godsend particularly in the heat of the day, and attracted all manner of birds. The decor of the apartment was stunning with much attention to detail. I particularly enjoyed the artwork.
The house is an 8-minute walk from the beach and a very fine boardwalk that was built in 2012. It runs from Rockley beach to Hastings beach, some 1.5 kms, and is well used by locals and tourists alike. It was wonderful to walk along the shore and enjoy the ocean without having to dodge traffic. No dogs, bikers, rollerbladers are allowed on the boardwalk - just walkers and joggers. There were plenty of restaurants by the water and a farmers’ market every Wednesday and Saturday.
The owners, Ian and Cecily, were readily available by email as were the caretakers, Trudi and Randy. We had a problem with the a/c one day and within 24 hours, it was fixed. We were impressed. Trudi cooked us a delicious Bajan dinner one day - a real treat.
We didn’t have a car so relied on taxis and the prolific van buses which seemed to come along every two minutes and cost $3.5 Bajan to go anywhere on the island - surely one of the best and most efficient transit systems we’ve encountered in our travels.
All in all, we had a lovely time in Barbados which was made all the lovelier by our stay at Somnia.
My husband and I spent 4 weeks in Somnia looking for a relaxing stay. This was not our first trip to Barbados. We plan on purchasing a property this year in Barbados. Our previous stay on the island was great.
Somnia is a clean, comfortable home away with a lovely veranda. The kitchen appliances aside from the fridge and stove are tired though. The first week the handle to the toaster fell off. It was brought to the attention of the Property Manager, Trudi and we said we'd make due with using a knife to push down the handle. Our coffee maker never worked properly taking over an hour to brew. Before the second week is stopped working all together. Trudi was contacted that day and she quickly responded stating she'd have it replaced. By the 3rd week we still had not seen a replacement coffee maker so we purchased our own. Trudi then offered to pay for it but since we plan having our own place we decided to keep it and store it for our next trip to Barbados.
The neighbouring houses are close and as such sound travels. We understand you cannot choose your neighbours but it should be understood if you're looking to rent this property that there are several noisy dogs. We are dog breeders ourselves and understand dogs bark. Most of the time it's because the owner's don't pay attention or correct them. In this case the neighboring dogs were quite disturbing. They would bark for 10 min at a time, 1/2 hour or 3 hours straight. The one night they barked from 9:30 pm - 11:30 pm non-stop. We only heard 1 owner correct their dog on 1 occasion, only for it to continue and the owner ignore it. Since the house in question is VERY close it be heard in the bedroom very easily with the windows closed and the AC on. We complained the first week to the the Property Manager, Trudi but she didn't seem to acknowledge our concern at that point. We didn't want to be "Karen's" so we didn't complain again until it got too much to ignore. By the end of the 2nd week we couldn't enjoy our stay with the windows open close the patio doors and windows at times just to watch tv. At this point we brought it to the attention of both the Property Manager and the Owner. If it hadn't been for the fact that we had paid good money to stay we would have packed up and found other accommodations. Will we return to Barbados? ABSOLUTELY. Would we ever stay at Somnia? Never again. The house is lovely but not the dogs. Not sure how Ian can resolve this issue.

Our agents took steps to identify the source of the barking and they were assured by the owner that the dogs had been removed. Like many rental apartments on the island, Somnia is located in a residential neighbourhood and while this allows guests to enjoy the full experience of living alongside Bajans it does mean that guests should expect a certain level of noise as they would elsewhere. Our agents will always try to resolve any issues that arise but there are some things beyond our control. A quick read through our reviews should reassure potential guests that this was a rare occurrence and that over 90% of guests have enjoyed their time at Somnia (some are returning guests) and have given us 5* reviews. If you have any concerns at all about booking, please don’t hesitate to contact us and let us know what we can do to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Superb much better than a hotel in the best spot on the island. Convenient for airport and super beaches and restaurant bars, unbeatable. Some neighbouring noise but didn’t spoil the stay and is beyond the propietors control. May improve. Exceptional outside deck and fittings. Recommend this place.
Nice views of the ocean from the balcony and a terrific interior made our stay all we could ask for. Proximity to the sites in Bridgetown and convenient parking accommodations were also plusses.
We really enjoyed our 3 week stay at Somnia. The highlights were the large and breezy deck, the wonderful housekeeper as well as the property manager who clearly put her tenants first. The house is very comfortable for a couple and having the extra full bathroom was great for a short-term additional guest or two. The kitchen is also well equipped for self catering. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed the neighbourhood vibe. The only nuisance was the noise from one adjacent property but that could be ignored most times.
We had a fantastic week stay at the property, appreciating the tasteful decor, well equipped kitchen, and the very spacious and relaxing terrace.
The property is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. We had a car and found the location to be ideal short driving distance to nearby beaches, restaurants and super markets.
Highly recommended!

About the host
Hosted by Cecily and Ian Jones
We are Cecily and Ian, a British/Baijan couple currently living between south-east London, Jamaica and Barbados. We believe that our guests should enjoy their stay with us without interference, but when we are around we are happy to answer any questions, recommend places to visit, pick up groceries and deal with any problems. When we are not around our agent, Trudi, can meet and greet and deal with any issues.
Why they chose this property
What makes Somnia different from other properties is its homely but comfortable feel and its quiet, secluded location. It definitely does not have the soulless hotel feel of many apartments we have stayed at. This means that you can enjoy the peace and serenity of what feels like a rustic setting, yet the bars, beaches and nightlife are close by when you want them.
Barbados holds special significance for us because Cecily was born here - in the "Scotland district", so-called because it is the hilly part of the island. We have have visited many times and spend as much time on the island as we can. Although Barbados is small, there are still many places that we have not yet visited and other places that have changed over the years and are worth a second, third or fourth visit. Some attractions that we believe you will never tire of are the Atlantis submarine trip, St Nicholas Abbey, Harrison's Caves, Hunte's Garden and any boat trip involving rum punch, excellent food and swimming with the turtles. We believe that you too will want to come back, once you have experienced the island.
What makes this property unique
Somnia's location is a perfect compromise between the bustle and noise of a beach front property and something more secluded and tranquil. From here you can conveniently enjoy all the amenities and activities that the island has to offer. What makes Barbados different from many other Caribbean islands is that it is comparatively well-developed but it is still Caribbean in the most important ways: the climate, the sunsets, the beaches, the rum punch, the food and the welcoming spirit of the people. Barbados is also very accessible with frequent direct flights from North America, Europe and the UK.
