La Plata Mountains Bunkhouse - Cozy/Comfortable/Economical
BUNKHOUSE/CABIN: This little cabin is perfect for a couple or small close knit family. It was originally a one room log structure build in 1989 for the owners of the main cabin for sleeping quarters for grand kids and other visitors. In 2015 my Dad refinished it inside and out and added a bathroom, kitchenette and covered deck. It is uniquely handcrafted, comfortable, cozy and cute as a bugs ear. Although, it is close to the main cabin, the separate parking, entry, deck and grill are positioned in an effort to achieve privacy even when the main cabin is occupied. The main room has a full sized bed with new mattress, twin bunk beds and a living area. The kitchenette has granite counter top with drop in cook-top and compact oven. Every bit of space is utilized to provide the well equipped cooking utensils and food storage for those who enjoy good home cooked meals. The patio table and chairs on the outside deck offer a great place to dine. The bathroom (toilet and shower) is new and well appointed.
LOCATION/SETTING: This property lies in the foothills of the La Plata Mountain Range just 5 miles of paved country road from Mancos, Colorado. It sets on 3 acres of pine, juniper and gambel's oak trees. At an elevation of 7820 feet the summer evenings are generally cool and daytime temperatures are mild. The mesa top of Mesa Verde NP marks the horizon of the evening sunsets. A 30 minute drives gets you to historic downtown Durango. This proximity offers scenic beauty and too many outdoor activities and attractions to list. Take some time to relax on the deck and enjoy the resident birds, deer and maybe even a sighting of fox, bobcat or coyote.

We enjoyed our stay at this rustic cabin. It was well furnished for 1-3 persons; was clean; very quiet; with beautiful mountain views in a forest setting. Would definitely stay again when visiting kids and grandkids in the area.
My kids and I loved our stay at this cute little cabin! It was the perfect home base for our adventures in Mesa Verde and Durango. The host was so kind and helpful (especially when there was an unexpected snowstorm and my vehicle got stuck!). The cabin was clean and in good repair. It was close enough to grocery stores and gas stations, but far enough we got the secluded camping vibes we were looking for!

Quiet, cozy, clean & comfortable
We loved this place! My wife and I stayed here for a short getaway from Denver. It's in a great location with just a walk up the road to the national forest, 10 minutes from Mesa Verde NP, and 30 minutes to Durango. We saw several deer and elk roaming the neighborhood. The cabin is very well taken care of, and the owner is super friendly and accommodating.
Wonderful cabin, excellent communication with host & accurate description of property. I'd strongly recommend future guests to bring fans, cabin does not cool well or have proper air flow without access to back door. Keeping all windows/door open helps but not sufficient during current heat wave. We look forward to our next visit & strongly recommend.
We loved our stay here it was wonderful, owner would always answer our calls or texts and help with any questions we had. We highly recommend the stay here. We are coming back soon.
Overall amazing experience. Durango, Silverton, Mancos, Mesa Verde. Perfect location. Great amenities.
Thank you for the jump start (dead battery) on the way out!
We absolutely love this little cabin!! Great location, great owners. Close to all sorts of fun recreation. Even just sitting on the deck watching the sun go down was amazing. Thanks!!
We enjoyed our stay at the cabin. We could cook anything in the compact little kitchen and the grill. We spend most days exploring the area (nearby mountains and streams and Mesa Verde), and a some time just relaxing on the porch! We picked a week that was ...well...hot but the host was very attentive and brought an extra fan by. I hope to come back.
Cain and property were as advertised. So cute! and had everything we needed for a week. Great base location for fantastic day trips enjoying nature! We kayaked at 3 different lakes, did scenic drives and the train ride in
Durango. Enjoyed looking around downtown Mancos also. Had deer in our yard one morning! Would love to make a return trip to this little cabin!
We stayed at this cabin in November and fell in love with it’s cozy and comfortable style! We loved it so much we came back in June to experience it in the summer! This cabin has everything you need for a family getaway- including access to a wooded yard, and close to hiking and biking trails. Chelsea is super kind and responsive with her communication. We hope to return again in the future!
Nestled above the town of Mancos, this little cabin has everything my little family needed for a weekend getaway from the stress of the city. Clean, well stocked(love the attention to detail!) and ridiculously cute, I could spend every weekend in that cabin! At first I was hesitant to book at a place that seemed so far away from everything, but there's actually SO much to do nearby. We spent an entire day at Mesa Verde Narional Park even with half the trails and all the buildings still closed off, and finished with a dip in the river at Cottonwood Park near downtown Mancos. We want to return for the cidery that was closed, as well as some time to explore all that nearby Durango has to offer. We didn't have enough time! Chelsea is gem and goes above and beyond! Can't say enough great things about this place!
The compact and well-equipped cabin/bunkhouse was a perfect home base from which my 89 y.o. dad and I explored the area over a week. We cooked and enjoyed quiet, peaceful mornings and evenings on the deck. I could easily see a couple or young family here.
Located a short drive down a paved county road off of US 160 just east of Mancos, it was very convenient for day trips to all major sites in the area - Durango, Silverton, Telluride, Dolores, Cortez, Mesa Verde. We especially enjoyed Canyon of the Ancients Heritage Center near Dolores, Absolute Baking Company and Bomdiggity in artsy Mancos, and Sutcliffe Wines in McElmo Canyon.

Serenity
The cabin was absolutely perfect . I enjoyed not having a television or internet. It was a true getaway. The location was great and not too far from town. In the morning we would see a few deer feeding outside our door. Rollin was a great host. Upon arriving there were a couple of delicious cookies on the table . (how thoughtful!) .We went horseback riding just around the corner. That was so amazing, peaceful and beautiful. We are looking to come back again!

Peaceful Mountain Cabin
The cabin was beautiful and clean! The location could not have been better. Very close to lots of mountain bike trails and great food in any direction. An absolutely perfect place to unwind after a day of fun. We spent lots of time enjoying the deck. Horseback riding within minutes of the cabin. The owner, Rollin, was great and made sure we had everything we needed. We’ll definitely be back.

About the host
Hosted by Chelsea Lunders
Hi I'm Chelsea. I grew up not far from this cabin. My parents moved to the mountains of Colorado in 1974, and fell in love with all it has to offer. My dad, who was a consume woodworker and geologist, built a beautiful home here. He and my Mom treated the land with care and taught my brother and I all about skiing, hiking, gardening, raising animals and much, much more. After moving away for some time, I felt the urge to return home and I'm so thrilled to have such a beautiful community to return to. I now work as a medical anthropologist for Hospice, run my own wellness practice, volunteer with the Mancos Creative District, and care for the land that my parents so lovingly cultivated, including the cabins.
Why they chose this property
We purchased the cabin in fall 2010 from our friend George and his family who used it as a vacation getaway. George and his wife Margaret built this log cabin at the same time we created our home so we had a lot in common and enjoyed seeing them when they or their family members came to get away from it all. Since buying the cabin we have been working hard and having fun getting it ready to be a vacation rental. Much refinishing and insulating to make it winter worthy. In 2015 we remodeled the one room bunkhouse and added a bathroom, kitchenette, and deck, turning it into a compact uniquely crafted 2nd cabin. We live just a short walk away and enjoy offering this comfortable vacation property for your next getaway into nature. We are located in beautiful Echo Basin by the entrance of the San Juan National Forest with the Echo Basin Loop Drive. We are a five-mile drive from Mancos, Colorado with nearby Mesa Verde National Park, Ute Mountain Tribal Park and so many other exciting and interesting destinations.
What makes this property unique
We love to relax on the shaded porch with a cool drink while watching the deer, listening to the birdsong and watching a gorgeous sunset. In the fall the aspen and Gambel oak trees in the area afford an amazing color show. Whether you are in the area for outdoor sports activities, sightseeing or just relaxing, the cabin is a great place to stay.
