Tastefully furnished 4 star gîte in historical village of Fontevraud l'Abbaye

Sleeps 6 (can accommodate 2 extra people on cosy sofa in lounge)
Our gîte is the perfect setting in which to relax and share in the joy of life . We are, Sylvie and Mark and we welcome you to an extremely cosy residence to give you a maximum amount of comfort with many on-site facilities. The gîte is ideally located to tour the region, only 10 miles away from Saumur. The visit of the royal abbey is a must where you can discover the effigies of some of the Plantagenêt kings and queens. A contemporary art museum with a 5 million Euro art collection opened its doors in July 2021. A fabulous addition to the abbey visit
Although you are in the heart of the village, you will feel totally secluded as our garden is 2000m2. You will be sitting by the pond, listening to the frogs in the spring and summer or indulging in swimming in our heated sunken Sydney Sunbay 7 x 5m swimming pool. The pool is only shared with us the owners respectully of your privacy.

On colder days, you can snuggle in front of the fireplace! We are fluent in English, French and German. Sylvie runs a language school teaching French to local residents and Francophiles from all over the world. Landscaped garden with enclosed privacy garden


Changeover day in July and August : Changeover is usually Saturday. Arrival time from 4pm and departure time no later than 10.30am. For other seasons, flexible


Touristic sites privileged discovery: Sylvie has provided you with a lot of brochures in the gîte describing all the nearby places of interest and extra ones further afield.

Sylvie can organise cookery courses with the local gastronomic restaurant and wine-tasting sessions with local partners. She can also take you to the local craftsmen who love disclosing the secrets of their savoir-faire.

Catering service, à la Carte French tuition, cooking classes:

The gastronomic restaurant opposite the gite offers a catering service. I run cookery workshops for our gite guests with the restaurant chef. You can combine an idle stay with an unforgettable activity!

You can also make the most of your stay to join a few French classes. It would be so much more interesting for you if you could communicate better with the people around you.

This is a unique opportunity of combining the learning of French with an exciting area of interest : gastronomy, wine, cultural heritage.

Highly recommended.

Wonderful property, great location. The village is beautiful and lots to do nearby. Sylvie and Mark were great hosts, on hand for some fantastic local recommendations, but never intrusive. My family and I had a fantastic time and we would all highly recommend.

Perfect!!!!

Thank you to Sylvie and Mark for letting us stay at your beautiful gite. The house, garden and pool were all perfect. It really is a hidden oasis in the middle of the village. It's so quiet and peaceful by the pool you would never know that just seconds away is the centre of the village with shops and restaurants. Our only regret is not staying for longer.

Loire stay

We stayed for a week in the last week of August. We benefitted from Sylvie’s recommendations for vineyards, wine tasting and local chateaux to visit which we followed to the letter and enjoyed. The gite was very clean and well supplied with towels (both pool and bathroom) and we used the pool everyday (Mark and Sylvie are discreet and leave the pool and bottom half of the garden to you). Only note of caution is that whilst there are 3 or 4 restaurants, they are ‘average’ for France rather than exceptional. (We didn’t try the top end Fontevraud Abbaye restaurant). We cooked 3 or 4 times and had nice meals outside in the private ‘bower’ by the gite. Lots of things to see 10-15 mins drive away and good LeClercs etc The Abbey is on the doorstep is worth a visit - it’s best to get an annual pass if you plan on going more than once. Montserau and Saumur are also highly recommended.

Lovely, but slightly marred.

The gite was lovely and in a beautiful village with a number of restaurants within easy walking distance. Sylvie was very welcoming and always friendly. Unfortunately our visit was let down by three things. Firstly whilst on our arrival the pool side furniture was out and we were told we were welcome to use it, by the Monday, the loungers had been put away and the table and chairs covered. It would have been nice if they were put out each day. I suppose we could have asked, but felt uncomfortable to do so. We still used the pool which was very nice. The second thing was the husband, who was snappy with my daughter and myself on two separate occasions. May be he was just having an off week, but it made us feel uncomfortable. The third thing was an message we received on returning home. Unfortunately due to our original EasyJet flight being cancelled, we had to leave a day early and at 5.00 am in the morning. But we believe we left the property in good order. When I got home I had a message asking ‘where was the cooker knob we broke off the oven’. We had not broken anything as far as we were aware and if we had we would have definitely reported it and would not have disposed of the knob as Sylvie suggested. As I say these things marred what could have been a really good week.

Quiet relaxation in a beautiful gite.

Très bon week-end de l’ascension

Excellent accueil dans un gîte superbe. Nous avons passé un super séjour, tous les membres de la famille y ont trouvé leur compte: le logement, le jardin, la piscine, le cadre, le village de Fontevraud et toutes les activités disponibles aux alentours (superbe fête médiévale de Montreuil Bellay !). Bref, un gîte que nous recommandons.

Un vrai paradis !

Nous avons passé de superbes vacances dans un vrai paradis. Nous avons séjourné dans un gite très confortable, joliment décoré et avec un grand jardin magnifique. Nous avons adoré la piscine chauffée. Le gîte est situé dans une belle région à découvrir ainsi que dans un beau village. Le gîte se situe à proximité d'une supérette, boulangerie, cafés et restaurants accessibles à pied. Nous remercions les propriétaires pour leur accueil, leurs bons conseils de visite dans la région et leur discrétion. Nous avons apprécié les nombreuses brochures de visite, les adresses de restaurants ainsi que les magasines. Sans oublier les livres et jeux pour enfants. Nous recommandons vivement ce gite à toute personne souhaitant passer d'excellents vacances au calme.

Perfect holiday gite

Although in the centre of the village this excellent gite has an amazing garden which gives an impression of being in the middle of the countryside. Its very convenient for sightseeing the small supermarket and patisserie only a walk away perfect for breakfast croissants. Our hosts Mark and Sylvie were very accommodating and helpful

Very convenient gite for the Abbey and local restaurants

We were 4 adults travelling in a family holiday. The gite was very comfortable and the pool was great at the end of each day! Sylvie gave excellent advice about places to go. We were a little disappointed with the Abbey itself, mainly its tourist information and the presentation, but really enjoyed exploring the area, especially Montsoreau and Candes St Martin., and chateaus at Usee and Montreuil-bellay. Beware Monday shops closed and lunchtime closures of some tourist facilities!

Fantastische vakantiewoning

Prachtige woning in een historisch plaatsje. Leuke voorzieningen en restaurants op loopafstand. Woning is uniek gelegen midden in de binnenstad Eenmaal in de prachtige enorme tuin waan je je in een park! Het Mooie zwembad met comfortabele ligstoelen maakt het helemaal af. De tuin heeft diverse leuke zitjes. Het huis is comfortabel en van alle gemakken voorzien. De eigenaren wonen aan de voorzijde. Zeer vriendelijk en goed contact met de eigenaresse.

Beautiful place, fantastic holiday.

We came to stay for a week in July with our three small children and could not have had a better time. The gite is lovely (great sitting room and a very well stocked kitchen) but we spent most of our time in the pretty garden - either eating at one of the three outdoor tables or in the pool. The location is excellent, a pleasant hundred yard stroll to the central square and the boulangerie, a couple of places for a meal or drink, and the abbey. Lots to do near by (the Cadre Noir, Saumur, Chinon, Breze, good local markets, and we even managed some wine tasting). Slyvie and Mark were charming, helpful, and bilingual. Highly recommended spot. We'll be back!

Excellent holiday stay in the Loire valley

We would like to say that we really enjoyed our stay at La Samsonelle in Fontevraud- l’Abbaye. Not only is it a lovely part of France but the property is a very good place to stay and it was one of the best equipped and beautifully clean houses that we have rented over our many years visiting France. The garden and the swimming pool were lovely and we spent quite a lot of our time there. Mark and Sylvie were ideal hosts being very friendly and welcoming, and helpful when needed as well as being discreet. We would certainly recommend it as somewhere to visit and stay. My name's Sylvie, I'm a French native who lived with my English husband Mark in England for 6 years before we bought this property in Fontevraud in 1992 , part of which was renovated as the gîte in 2007. We have two grown-up children : Annabelle and Samuel who live and work in Angers.

"After working for 18 years, as Head of the Language Center at the Saumur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I wanted to become self-employed in the privileged setting of our exceptional village and developed a language and gîte business"

"With the renovation works carried out on the outbuildings in 2007, Mark and I wanted you to enjoy all the traditional architectural style of the region : wooden beams,, tufa stone thick walls ( keeping you cool in summer), a slate roof, whilst being able to enjoy all the modern amenities, including a wood pellet stove for extra cosiness, coming on top of the central heating. "

Of course we can only welcome one family at a time, so you have the privileged use of the property and the pool.

Enjoying the peacefulness of our landscaped garden listening to the humming of the birds , swimming in our heated pool enjoying the sun all day, watching the frogs and the waterlilies in our ponds, whilst having access to restaurants and services in the village, 200m down the road ,to an amazing history with lots of touristic sites within 10 miles, being able to indulge in the French Art de Vivre with tons of independent wine growers, the famous sparkling wine merchants in and around Saumur, and also being able to take part in local events throughout the year.
