Wonderful property and great location on the lake. Devil’s Lake is a beautiful, clear water and sandy bottomed lake. The water was clean and the location is close to the sand bar. My family had a wonderful long weekend at a unique house.
What a wonderful location about an out and a half from Detroit. The cabin is exactly that, a cabin built by a family in the 1940s and has remained in the same family for generations. It has everything you need for a wonderful stay. Comfortable beds, plenty of beach towels, a small but chef friendly kitchen and all the tools you need to make your family favorites or try something new.

A beautifully loved lake cottage. This cottage was built in the 40's and they conformed it without rebuilding it and has that old cottage feel but updated. Everything was very clean and Sara was a fantastic host! The home has everything you could ask for while staying at the lake. Thank you, Sara

Thank you for your feedback. The listing indicates there is no A/C and that the cottage was built in 1940. The cottage has been and continues to be updated in recent years to include new hardwood floors, brand new flooring in bonus room (2016), newer appliances (2015, 2016), All new windows (2014), new linens, towels and window coverings (2016), newer beds, updated bathroom, updated plumbing (2016), new driveway (2015) and new roof (2016), also Wi-Fi and cable. We plan to continue updating as needed, however this cottage is best suited for those seeking a true "classic cottage" experience - as is reflected in the description.
A great lake vacation in Michigan all depends on the weather and it was glorious for all 5 days! Very quaint cottage, surprisingly roomy, with history galore on prestigious cherry point! Will return!

Rustic cottage with modern amenities. Very enjoyable stay!
Throwback cottage with a lot of character. Great waterfront and sandy beach. Family and friends had a blast despite a couple days of crappy weather. All basic items were provided. All sorts of memorabilia to check out if you're inclined. The owners (Sara and Leslie) give the cottage a personal touch and were helpful and responsive.

Awesome cottage, location for family time
Haloma is a wonderful, well equipped cottage and lake location. And a "cottage" it is with all the artifacts and heirlooms throughout, telling the history of the cottage. The cottage and grounds are amble for family and friend time. You literally only need your favorite beach towel and swimsuit everything else is already there. Large deck at the end of the dock was great for just hanging out. Swim area is great for little ones (shallow) or just rafting, which we did a lot of.Had a wonderful relaxing time, looking forward to booking for next summer. Rented a pontoon from Rob's Rentals, great time cruising the lake and our kids enjoyed time at the sand bar.

We had 4 days to get away and unwind and we were lucky to have found such a warm and charming cottage. The cottage is such a cool rustic home, located on a very quiet street. We really didn't see or hear any neighbors. It was very clean and so many vintage photos on the wall, as well as lamps and other antiques. The lake was simply beautiful. Very clear and extremely quiet in the mornings. We were on the lake at 6 am and watched the sunrise every day. We had the entire lake to ourselves. In the afternoons, the lake comes a live with many pontoon boats, jet skiers and water skiers. Fun to watch. We ate at several local pubs/restaurants and all of them were great. Very friendly people with extensive menus. We truly enjoyed ourselves and Sara and Leslie could not have been better hosts. Very responsive and really wanted us to have a relaxing week - which we did. : ) Dave R

Family members that live in the area came to enjoy sitting in the yard overlooking the lake. My wife grew up in Addison and spent summers with family and friends on the sandbar in the lake. As for the house we are sorry to safe it was not very clean. Linen and towels were excellent however. My biggest concern was the property did not have ground fault breakers in kitchen or bathroom. Many outlets were clearly from the original construction. In addition there were numerous extension cords being used by owner to provide lighting. I have pictures if you wouldn't like me to share with others. I will just end with that. I will be surprised to see this review posted. It is clear that many reviews are not published or there are many months that this unit goes without being rented.

We were surprised and upset to read that you had an issue with the cleanliness of the cottage. We employ a cleaning service to thoroughly clean the cottage prior to every rental. Cleanliness for our renters is a top priority for our family. Had you contacted us with your concerns during your stay, we would have immediately addressed and resolved any issues you had with cleaning.
Any extension cords used in the cottage are UL Certified and each cord is used for ONE lamp only, and only when the lamp is placed in a spot where the cord cannot reach the outlet. The cottage was built in 1940, and cottages of that era did not have an abundance of outlets. The electrical was updated years ago with a breaker box and updated wiring. Again, had you contacted us with your concerns, we would have gladly explained this to you.
Regarding your bogus comments about reviews, if you had bothered to read VRBO policy, you would know that we have absolutely no control over reviews that are left, or not left, by our renters. Only those who rent through VRBO are allowed to leave reviews, which we welcome and appreciate. The majority of our renters have been clients for years and rent directly through our family with no ability to leave a review on the VRBO website. The fact that the same families return year after year speaks for itself. Haloma is a family summer cottage, which we use ourselves and only rent a few weeks each year. Your insinuation that we are somehow hiding negative reviews or unable to rent due to (non-existent) negative reviews is 100 percent untrue, insulting, and should be disregarded. It is a violation of VRBO policy to post false information in a review.
Fun family time over the holiday weekend. The place was just as pictured and really felt you were lent the cabin from another family member. On site introduction from one of the owners really made us feel welcomed. Great family heritage here! The windows were very new and easy to use making for great cross breezes throughout the whole place. Loved the views from the living room on both sides and the sunroom. The dining area is small for my big buys, but we ate dinner outside - on the patio, looking at the lake. THE VIEWS WERE AMAZING. We loved having access to the kayak and paddleboards.
The owners were very, very responsive both before and during our stay. We had a small issue and it was addressed immediately with a solution greater than I would have thought of myself.
My recommendation would be to add some sort of light on the stairs, even a battery operated push light, the steps did get very dark.
Everything you need is here for a great family weekend, games, BBQ, beach towels etc. The water was shallow enough for our granddaughter to play endlessly while we watched from the dock.
Great recommendation for Luigi's Pizza on the last day. MMM.
We rented a pontoon from Rob's Rentals and had a wonderful time - we would suggest getting their before 9:00 as they recommend and you can really have the boat ALL DAY!!
Keep in mind that you are very close to the famous sandbar, great if you want to be with the action. Saturday (Labor Day weekend) the party was jamming with full karoake - not so peaceful.
My parents raved about it too!

Thank you Cheryl. It was a pleasure to have your family stay at our cottage. There is a light at the top of the stairs with light switches at the bottom AND top of the stairway (7 stairs) so not sure what the problem was with lighting. We are sorry you had an issue with this And yes, Labor Day weekend is definitely busy on Devil's Lake as it is on most lakes with folks partying as a last hurrah of the summer. We usually don't rent on Labor Day weekend but decided to give it a go this year. We will probably block this weekend in the future. Glad your parents enjoyed themselves. Thanks much! Sara and Leslie

Devils Lake Vacation
First I want to say that the location of the cottage is perfection! The lake is so clear at the dock and the trees allow just enough shade from the hot summer sun. The owners were welcoming and extremely responsive to any questions and concerns. That being said, the property is apparently in the process of being updated but many of the planned updates had not been completed. The stairs from the patio to the dock need to be done. The current “stairs” are pavers with 2 stones that rock and are slippery. The cottage is old..and the posted pictures are current, but the place is so dark and dreary. The clutter is almost suffocating.. There was so much dust and cobwebs covering the shelves, stairs, and lights. The bathroom upstairs was clean but is in urgent need of being recaulked and there were multiple mildew stains that we scrubbed with bleach cleaner prior to use. Our biggest concern was the electrical. There were so many cords and extensions with inadequate lighting and we truly worried if it was up to date and not a fire hazard. There were 2 refrigerators and the one in the kitchen was empty and somewhat clean but the garage refrigerator was filthy with expired food and green liquid on the bottom. So we avoided that refrigerator at all costs. My humblest opinion is that this property shoukd be overhauled, updated, and thoroughly cleaned top to bottom. That being said, despite the condition, my family made wonderful memories and I do appreciate the responsiveness of the owners.

Thank you for your review Laura. We apologize that you had some issues during your stay. Had you contacted us about the fridge, dust and caulk, we would have corrected your concerns immediately. Our cleaning company performs a thorough spring clean every year, as well as a cleaning between each renter. I will discuss your issues with them directly to be sure this does not occur again. We have never experienced complaints with this company. The bathroom shower/tub area is recaulked annually as lake houses can be damp. The bathroom(s), including floor, sink, toilet and tub is thoroughly cleaned and bleached between each renter. We have had the electrical updated in recent years and inspected by an electrician. We do use extension cords in a couple spots solely because the outlets are not all in convenient locations and would require the moving of furniture to reach them. The exterior stairs were scheduled to be replaced this summer but the project was not completed prior to rental season due to a material shortage. We continue to be on a waiting list for this job. As far as clutter, we display memorabilia and nostalgia around the cottage and the feedback has always been positive. We continue to update Haloma annually however our intent is to maintain the feel of a nostalgic 1940’s lake cottage. Thanks again and we wish you all the best.
This cottage is what I remember a lakefront home to be like. It's beautiful wood walls and windows looking out over the lake. The dock and sand bottom lake made it nice to enjoy the water. Even though it rained a few days we still had a great time.

We rented this property for my parents for a week in September. The rest of our family had reserved another cottage directly across the lake. The house was perfect for them. Both owners were lovely to work with and we appreciated the face to face welcome we received when checking in. The views from the house were incredible and my dad enjoyed reading his book out on the patio. The private dock made it easy for us to pick up my parents with our boat before heading out on the lake. We will definitely be back to Devils Lake and we won’t hesitate to look into renting this property again! Thank you all so much!

Very nice lake house for a family with kids ages 12-16. We enjoyed the lake all week. The lake is shallow by the dock and good for kids to play in especially with the paddle board. Owners very nice. Charming place.

Great location, as described. AC unit in middle bedroom does not disperse out anywhere even with use of fans and that bedroom becomes an ice box in middle of night. Suggest owners keep windows shut rather open as was when we arrived and a very hot day therefore cottage extremely stuffy. Suggest owners perform a routine deep cleaning and check the sofa pull outs for sheets to be changed. Our concerns were addressed promptly.
Lots of interesting things, family heirlooms/antiques to look at. All basic things (kitchen/bath) are provided.

Thank you for your review Loretta. To address your suggestions, we actually do have our cleaners perform an annual spring cleaning, however this year our original cleaner quit at the last moment which left us scrambling to engage a new service. Fortunately we did find excellent cleaners, and the new service did their best on an extremely tight schedule, but missed dust under the bed and vacuuming the inside of the fold out sofa - for which we blame ourselves - and for that we do apologize. Our new service will perform a spring cleaning early next summer and will pay close attention to these specific issues. Regarding the A/C unit in the middle bedroom, that was just added this summer. We are considering the installation of central air in the future, but for now, our intention was simply to keep folks comfortable during the days of extreme summer heat. We placed the upstairs unit in the middle bedroom due to its central location.
The a/c generally works well cooling the bedrooms for sleeping, however I would suggest turning the unit to the "low" setting or even off once the rooms are comfortable in order to avoid the "ice box" effect for those sleeping in the middle bedroom. This has worked well for our family and other renters and we have received no other complaints. Lastly, because this is a lake cottage, we actually prefer to welcome renters with open window and fresh air circulating. Contrary to your opinion, we feel that closed windows leave the cottage stuffy and unwelcoming, even if it is warm outside. Our renters are more than
welcome to close windows and turn on the air if they prefer. And in the meantime, they can always throw on their suits and begin their vacations with a float in the beautiful waters of Devils Lake.
We had a great experience. They have so much history in this cottage. It is not modern, but has kept the cottage charm, taking you back in time. You are right in the lake at Cherry Point - the most exclusive part of the lake. The owners were very kind and took care of any concerns before and during our stay. They put posts in for us to store our waverunner and let us use a lift for our boat. It was a wonderful trip for us.

About the host
Hosted by Sara Fischer
My sister and I are the proud owners of Haloma after having spent a lifetime of summers here. We grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, 90 miles from our cottage. My sister lives three miles from the cottage and I live in Grosse Pointe with my son and husband.
Why they chose this property
Haloma was built in 1940 by our grandparents. It has been a beloved family gathering spot for our family and friends for over 80 years. It is our desire to share our home with folks who appreciate a classic lake house, continually updated and meticulously maintained, while preserving the charm of a classic vintage cottage. Please view photos before renting. Haloma is best suited for those who seek a lake cottage with the feel of days gone by while still offering the modern amenities you expect in today's world. We love spending time here with our families and you will too. There is truly nothing like summertime at the lake.
What makes this property unique
Spending time at a lakefront retreat with family has been a lifelong joy for us and numerous families return to rent from us each year. The cottage is situated on a double lot, so it offers plentiful outdoor space and 90 feet of waterfront. Whether enjoying the water, sitting on the dock, patio or on the inside porch, or playing family games in the large yard, the feel of lake living surrounds you.
