About this property

Cosy restored large house - close to Malin Head, beaches and golf courses

The "Lower House" in the townland of Knockglass (translated "green hill"), Malin is nestled in rolling farmland approximately halfway between Ireland's most northerly point at Malin Head and the quaint village of Malin Town. The house is over 250 years old and has been carefully refurbished in recent years to maintain its character and charm; back in the day it was part of a clachan (group of houses) in a small rural community on a farm. Many of the houses remain and are either no longer occupied or demolished. The "Lower House" sits at the edge of a working farm with just 2 neighbouring households where once there were more than 7 houses. Part of the house in fact was a shop that served the local community.
The house itself is 1 1/2 story with two interconnected living/dining rooms, well-stocked kitchen, utility with laundry facilities, a shower W/C, bathroom, 4 double bedrooms and one large open-plan bedroom (with 3 single and 1 double bed) and two wood-burning stoves. Finished internally with lime render and with exposed structural timbers the design and decor intentionally aims to create a comfortable, cosy ambience.
There is a fireguard, removable stair gates on one stair case (not on the spiral stairs), childs high chair and kitchen utensils suitable for kids.
Externally in a fully enclosed garden there are 3 lawns and two patios with BBQ, fire pit and garden toys, swing, see-saw - to keep children entertained. Walks or short drives in several directions take you to dramatic clifftop views over Trawbrega Bay and the whole of the north Donegal coast, the stunning Five Fingers Strand.
If you want to get away from it all, detach yourself from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and soak up the amazing scenery of the Atlantic coast then this area and this house should be top of your list!

Beautiful peaceful cosy family time
Great home for big family group - very cosy and multiple living spaces. Fire pit outside is fun to sit by & watch cows and geese, cosy lounge rooms with wood heaters, beautiful bedrooms to wake up in. So much to do in the area, beaches, stunning walks & sweet charming & friendly little towns everywhere. Could have spent longer.

Family holiday
We had a great time here in April 2023. The house is spacious with plenty of beds and two bathrooms. There is a bedroom at the top of the spiral staircase that can sleep 4/5 kids. There is an amazing view from the garden looking onto the hills and down to the beach which is close to the house. Overall this house is recommended if you need space for a large family or group and are looking to explore the Malin Head region.

Family owned property with long historic ties going back > 150 years

Why they chose this property

This property was owned by our parents and used by our family for several decades for summer holidays on the family farm adjacent. It is located in a simply gorgeous part of the world and is suitable for families who want some peace and quiet near a beautiful beach.

What makes this property unique

We restored the property about 2012 but have retained as much of the original character as possible. So it's a carefully and tastefully restored old farmhouse with loads of character on the edge of a farm. You are unlikely to be disappointed!
