About this property

Villa Allegra former olive farmhouse with pool (sleeps 9)

Villa Allegra is a short walk away from the medieval 'borgo' of Sant'Andrea di Compito, famous for its ancient camellia trees and olive oil. Villa Allegra was once a farm belonging to the Lucca family Giovanetti, who built the property in 1676 to process olives from their land on the foothills of the Monte Pisano. The Villa consists of the 5-bedroomed main house and 3-bedroomed barn. The two properties are completely separate, but share grounds of 3,500 metres and the large, circular pool. Both properties have their own designated alfresco dining area.

The main house of Villa Allegra has five bedrooms, consisting of three doubles (one of which can be made up as a twin room), one twin and one single room. The West and East side double rooms (bedrooms 1 and 4) connect with, respectively, a single bedroom and a large twin bedroom, to create family suites. These two suites both have ensuite bathrooms. The West side suite has ample space for a baby bed. The slightly smaller middle double room has its own ensuite bathroom and space - if required - for a baby bed or put-up bed. All three main double bedrooms have spacious walk-in closets. The twin room has a spacious wardrobe.

Just a few metres away from the property, along an olive tree-lined lane, you will find the public tennis courts, with two courts, bookable by the hour at the cultural centre. A 7-minute walk will take you to the nearest pizzeria/restaurant - Tre Tigli. Closer still, at the end of the garden (250m) lies the village shop where you can by local, artisan products as well as food and household basics. At the start of the road (2km) you can get an authentic Italian coffee or cappuccino at Elena's bar (Via della Pieve 22). The supermarket is 4 km away at San Leonardo in Treponzio. Lucca is 11km, Florence 55km and Pisa airport is a 38-minute car trip, either via the motorways or through the villages of Pisa.

Villa Allegra is located at the centre of the twinned village of Pieve di Compito and Sant'Andrea di Compito. Shaded by hills known as the Monte Pisano, the area a special microclimate that make it cooler in Summer. It is well fed by streams from the Monte Pisano, and on the main road just before you arrive at the house you can fill up cans with fresh spring water at the public fountain. After a scorching day touring the cultural towns of Florence, Sienna or San Gimignano, when you come home you will find lots of leafy, shady spots to retire to. If you still need cooling down, you can take a short trip (5 minutes by car) to the local ice cream cafe, PappaGrappa, which makes its own all-natural ice creams and sorbets.

From Villa Allegra there are various mountain walks you can make, into the Monte Pisano. The mountain range is very popular with hikers as it is still offers a wealth of flora and fauna to explore and enjoy. Alternatively, you can visit the Camillietum Compitese - the Camellia botanical garden of Pieve di Compito, which boasts 1,000 cultivars.

Beautiful and ancient house near Lucca

I stayed a week at Villa Allegra and the rating is absolutely positive. The house is located in a quiet village in a very green valley on the hills near Lucca. It is therefore located in a very green and natural environment but, at the same time, not far from the services and events of the city. The house is very old and there is a truly unique atmosphere, giving the impression of living in a historic place. The house is structured on several floors and you can take advantage of large spaces but also separate from each other that allow you to be in complete autonomy and tranquility. The house can accommodate several people and is equipped with well-structured and functional kitchens and services. The house overlooks a large garden where you can enjoy both the pool and quiet corners where you can read, chat with other guests or simply rest.

Comfort, history, amazing food & natural beauty!!

Couldn't have been happier with my stay. The property feels authentic and rustic, but also clean, comfortable and well-maintained. Comfy beds, very spacious layout. And even in the July heat it was pleasantly cool inside. The real attraction to me is the surrounding area - the most amazing food & wine on earth and so much culture to explore just a little while away. Emma will knock your socks off. I hope to come back again soon!

I'm originally from the UK and have travelled a lot. Italy is one of my favourite countries. It's stunningly beautiful to explore, has a beautiful language, a kind culture and an excellent culinary heritage. Plus the sea, city and nature are so conveniently close to each other. I like to spend time in nature, foraging for herbs or wild mushrooms. But I also like to visit museums and go to music concerts and exhibitions. The village of Pieve di Compito, where this property is located, allows you to do all that in one day!

Why they chose this property

I have loved Italy since I was 19 and a student of Italian. A few years later I discovered this ancient village immersed in nature, and as charmed by its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Pieve di Compito has an active summer cultural life, thanks to the activities organised by the local social and cultural centre, a non-profit organisation that hosts a famous international camelia show and a series of drama, classical, folk and jazz music concerts, as well as seminars on the nutritional and medicinal value of the local 'weeds' and herbs.

What makes this property unique

Villa Allegra is in a very advantageous situation, nestling at the feet of olive slopes and with a cooling stream running at the bottom of the garden. The house is wide but narrow and entirely south and west facing, which means it gets lots of sun, yet its thick stone walls keep it cool.

To be surrounded by the sounds, sights and scents of nature, rich in biodiversity, is very calming. You hear a cockerel crow, many different kinds of bird song, you smell herbs, fragrant jasmin and the occasional scent of burning leaves. You hear the trickle of the waterfalls, crickets and cidadas, maybe some dogs barking in the distance. The calm of this ancient village with its ancient camelia trees contrasts with the bustling energy of the walled Medieval city of Lucca just 15 minutes away. There are also many local activities nearby. The village has two public tennis courts and open-air auditorium within five minutes of the house. The village shop, a bar and a restaurant are within walking distance too.

Pieve di Compito is in an ideal position for visiting Tuscany's cultural wonders and wineries. It's only 15 minutes from Lucca, an hour from Florence, 40 minutes from Pisa and its airport, and 1-1/2 hours from Sienna. The beaches are 40 minutes away and the surrounding area offers many country walks and a wide variety of restaurants (most of which require a car to get there). The area is very popular with cyclists and mountain bikes can be rented in nearby Guamo.
