About this property

Secluded 13-Acre Family Cabin Near Chimney Rock & Lake Lure - Mt Mitchell Views

Escape to our family-friendly modern mountain cabin on 13 secluded acres of woods and open field — the perfect peaceful retreat for large families and multi-generational getaways in the North Carolina mountains.
Wake up to breathtaking long- and short-range views of the Appalachian Mountains, including Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi). Sip your morning coffee on one of the expansive covered porches that wrap two sides of the home, adding 850 sq ft of outdoor living space with rough-cut black locust floors and posts harvested right from the property. Salvaged eastern hemlock from the surrounding mountains was used for the porch rails and roof rafters. In the evenings, watch colorful sunsets and listen to the gentle calls of barred owls or the buzz of hummingbirds — the only sounds breaking the peaceful quiet.
Inside, antique furnishings blend cleverly with modern comforts. The home features four bedrooms: three on the ground level and one large upstairs bedroom with two beds, comfortably sleeping your whole crew. Everyone rests well on brand-new Casper mattresses. After a day of adventure, soak in one of two antique clawfoot tubs.
Cozy Evenings & Family Meals
Gather around one of two hand-crafted fireplaces made with local Doggett Mountain rock — perfect for crisp mountain nights. The fully stocked, spacious kitchen makes it easy to prepare meals for the whole family. Enjoy them indoors at the large farm tables or outside on the porch with those incredible mountain views.

About the host

Hosted by Bob & Dawn Longe

Host profile image
We are Bob & Dawn, along with our daughters Wren & Sabal — a family of four from North Augusta, South Carolina, who are passionate about sharing this special place with other families.
We met in the late 1990s while studying at the Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources at the University of Georgia. That’s where our deep appreciation for native plants, wildlife, and healthy natural systems began. When we found these 13 secluded acres in the North Carolina mountains, we knew it was the perfect spot to create a home that honors the land.
We built this modern mountain cabin using materials from the property itself — black locust posts and floors from our own woods, and salvaged eastern hemlock for the porch rails and rafters. The two hand-crafted fireplaces are made with local Doggett Mountain rock. Every detail reflects our commitment to being good stewards of this beautiful piece of the Appalachians.
We love waking up to the same panoramic views of Mount Mitchell that our guests enjoy, listening for barred owls at dusk, and watching hummingbirds zip by the porches. Now we’re excited to open our cabin to other families so they can make their own memories — whether it’s gathering around the farm tables for a big meal, soaking in the clawfoot tubs after a day at Chimney Rock or Lake Lure, or exploring the trails with the Osprey baby hiking pack we keep on hand.
We take pride in keeping the home comfortable, clean, and well-stocked for multi-generational trips. If you have questions about the area or the cabin, we’re happy to help — we want your family to feel as at home here as we do.
We look forward to hosting you!

Why they chose this property

We’ve loved the Appalachian Mountains since childhood. Growing up in the Southeast, our family vacations and camping trips here left a deep impression — the biodiversity, history, and unique culture still draw us back.
We met at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources, where our passion for these mountains grew. Our dream was to own a piece of Appalachia so we could share it with our daughters, Wren & Sabal, and future generations.
In 2017 we began searching near Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. We found our 13-acre Appalachian oasis in early 2018, closed in February, and spent the next year and a half building a road and selectively harvesting timber to open up the sweeping mountain views (the black locust porch beams came from trees on our own land).
Local craftsmen — Mark A. Sneed Builder, Gilliam Logging & Sawmill, and Godfrey Grading — helped turn our dream into reality. Every detail, from the Doggett Mountain rock fireplaces to the salvaged hemlock porches, reflects our commitment to being good stewards of this beautiful land.
We’re excited to share this peaceful modern mountain cabin and its panoramic Mount Mitchell views with other families. We hope your stay creates memories you’ll cherish and pass down, just as we plan to do with our girls.

What makes this property unique

Quiet. Private. Secluded.

Step onto our 13-acre Appalachian oasis and feel the world fade away. Nestled on a peaceful knob with sweeping long- and short-range views of the mountains — including Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi — Kalmia Knob offers the perfect escape from daily life.
Our modern mountain cabin blends thoughtful design with natural beauty. Expansive covered porches (850 sq ft of outdoor living) wrap two sides of the home, built with black locust beams and floors harvested right from our land, plus salvaged eastern hemlock rails. Inside, two hand-crafted fireplaces made from local Doggett Mountain rock invite cozy evenings, while antique furnishings mix seamlessly with modern comforts like new Casper mattresses and clawfoot tubs.
True to our background in forestry and natural resources, we built this home as good stewards of the land — selectively opening views while preserving the woods and wildlife. Mornings bring coffee and sunrises, evenings bring colorful sunsets and the calls of barred owls. Hummingbirds zip by, and the only “noise” is nature.
It’s ideal for large families and multi-generational trips: four bedrooms (three on the main level), two large farm tables for meals inside or out, fast WiFi, and thoughtful kid extras including toys, books, a pack-n-play, high chair, booster seat, and even an Osprey baby hiking pack.
Just minutes from Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure, yet wonderfully removed from crowds, Kalmia Knob lets you reset, reconnect, and create memories surrounded by the beauty of the North Carolina mountains.
