Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed the Blacksmith Cabin and found it both super clean and surprisingly spacious — it’s a favorite for exactly that reason. We truly appreciate you choosing Anvil and hope to welcome you back again soon!
Thank you so much for your 5-star review! We’re delighted you enjoyed your stay and found your cabin clean and comfortable. Our team takes great pride in keeping everything spotless and welcoming, and we’re so glad you appreciated their friendliness. We look forward to hosting you again soon!
Our dog Frankie had a great time in the space. She doesn't do well in hotels and likes the quiet. It was private, convenient to everything Williamsburg had to offer, and was a great little cottage for us to stay in over the holiday!

Thank you so much for the wonderful 5-star review! We’re thrilled to hear that Frankie enjoyed her stay just as much as you did — our pet-friendly cottages are a favorite for guests who want a quiet, comfortable alternative to hotels. We’re glad you found the space private, convenient, and perfect for a holiday getaway in Williamsburg. We truly appreciate you choosing Anvil and would love to welcome you (and Frankie!) back again.
Wonderful stay, very comfortable. The shower was a little funny to work with trying to get hot water, but I figured it out. All in all, a great stay and we would stay again!

Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We’re thrilled to hear your stay was comfortable and that you’d choose to stay with us again — that means the world to our four-generation family team.
We really appreciate you choosing Anvil and hope to welcome you back for another wonderful visit!
We had a very nice stay at Anvil Campground. The place was so charming and had everything you needed in the cottage. The location is so convenient with its proximity to the stores and restaurants. Thanks for having us.
Great location to drive to Busch Gardens and Williamsburg. Kitchen is well stocked with dishes and pots and pans. The bathroom is very clean. The two futons in the living room are comfortable. The campground is very clean.
The property was great, awesome cabin with all that we needed. Cutest general store and great playgrounds. Dog park for a pet and very convenient. Only negative is that it is directly beside a very active railroad track. After the first night you get used to it though. Very friendly, very clean!
The staff were friendly and professional. Did not bother us but were there whenever needed.
Excellent condition and uniquely located to fishing, town, military bases, restaurant, Walmart (if you forgot something). Chairs were not very comfortable but we weren't sitting in them much unless it was a rainy day or watching a movie. Fire pit was small but did the job. Barbecue grill was excellent, just like the ones at the park except it is for your personal use.

Thank you so much for the visit and the great review!
We stayed at Anvil the weekend before Halloween, so there was trick or treating and it was so fun to see how everyone had decorated their campers. Everyone was really friendly, the workers at Anvil and the other visitors. The general store is stocked with everything from milk and eggs to firewood and tools. They also have free earplugs, if you’re a light sleeper when the train goes by. The Blacksmith cottage was great and it was nice to be so close to stores, so we did some grocery shopping and cooked most of our meals in the cottage. Williamsburg was just a few minutes drive away and there is also a bus that stops right at the campground. We really enjoyed our stay :)

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Listing accuracy
I booked the cottage for my family of 5. There must be an error in the listing, because, for the beds, the listing shows there are 1 queen bed and 4 sofa beds. Unfortunately, we found that there were only 2 sofa beds... so my 12 year old son and 11 year old daughter had to share a bed -- not cool. Also, when we entered the cottage, the first thing we smelled was pet urine. The rug at the entrance of the front door reaked. Probably from a previous guest not letting their dog out in time. Nonetheless, we don't have pets and this was very gross to us. I stored the rug in the closet until we left the next day. Other than that, the cottage was nice. The people working at the general store were friendly. And the kids enjoyed the pool.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re so glad you enjoyed the friendliness of our staff, the pool, and the comfort of the cottage overall.
The main description and details of our VRBO listing were correct, but we unfortunately found that error in the expandable detail section that showed an inaccurate bed configuration. We truly appreciate you bringing this to our attention so we could correct it. The cottage includes one queen bed, two double futons, and optional rollaway beds. We wish we had known during your stay, as we would have been happy to bring you as many rollaway beds as needed so everyone had their own comfortable sleeping space. That correction has already been submitted to VRBO.
As for the rug, we missed this during our cleaning process. While we’re not perfect, we always strive for a perfect effort, and we wish we would have known during your stay so we could have taken care of it right away for you. The issue has since been fully resolved.
Future guests can be assured that the listing is now accurate and the cottage is ready for a comfortable stay. We appreciate your comments and hope to welcome you back in the future for the five-star experience we always aim to deliver.
The campground is small, but has great amenities for the kids. They loved the pool and the zipline! The staff was very accommodating. A great place to stay a couple of nights with the family and our 2 dogs!
We found a cottage available with Anvil campground last minute and booked it- I’m so glad we did! The staff goes over the top to make sure all is well, from before check-in, throughout the stay, and when leaving. Our little boys loved the various playgrounds on the camp ground and everything was so clean. The general store was probably their favorite part; with lots of goodies and even some LEGOS. Thank you, we will be back!
This is a great place to stay for a family with pets. There are playgrounds throughout the facility for the kids and areas for dogs as well. The cottage itself is much larger than a hotel room and works well for families. Great bang for your buck.

About the host
Hosted by Anvil Campground
We’re a proud family from Williamsburg, Virginia, and we’ve been welcoming guests to our property since 1954. What started as a small, hand-built campground created by our grandfather Ralph and our father Jerry has grown into a place that’s now served hundreds of thousands of happy travelers — and still remains completely family-owned and operated.
Today, we’re the third generation to run Anvil Campground, and we’re fortunate to have the fourth generation working alongside us. Hosting is more than a job — it’s a legacy. We grew up here, working summers, learning the ropes, and helping our guests find joy in the simple things: campfires, good conversations, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
We love what we do because it connects us with people from all walks of life. We’re passionate about hospitality, and it shows — Anvil Campground has been named Virginia Campground of the Year (2024), National RV Park of the Year (2022 and 2018), and Small Business of the Year in Williamsburg (2019). Our guests become like family, and we’re committed to providing a clean, safe, and relaxing environment filled with personal touches and friendly service.
Whether it’s your first time staying with us or your fiftieth, we want you to feel right at home. Hosting is in our DNA — and we’re honored to continue a tradition that’s lasted over 70 years.
Why they chose this property
Our family chose this neighborhood because it’s where our Virginia story began. In the late 1920s, our great-grandfather and grandfather were hired by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to serve as the master blacksmiths for the original restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. They moved here from Flint, Michigan, to help bring history back to life — quite literally forging the tools and hardware that still decorate the historic area today.
After the restoration was complete, they decided to stay and plant roots in Williamsburg. They fell in love with this area’s charm, history, and the sense of community. In 1954, our family built Anvil Campground by hand, right in the heart of old Williamsburg — not far from where they once swung hammers in the blacksmith shop. We’ve been welcoming guests here ever since.
We love this neighborhood because it blends the best of both worlds: it’s peaceful and relaxed, but just minutes from iconic attractions like Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, and Jamestown. There’s so much to explore — yet our guests often say they’re just as happy relaxing at the campground. It’s a place with history, heart, and a true hometown feel. And for our family, there’s simply no place we’d rather be.
What makes this property unique
What makes our property unique is that it blends deep family history with modern, top-tier hospitality — something truly rare in today’s world of generic vacation rentals. Anvil Campground has been family-owned and operated for four generations, built by hand in 1954 by our grandfather and great-grandfather — both master blacksmiths hired by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to help restore Colonial Williamsburg. Our roots in this area run deep, and we’ve spent over 70 years creating a space where guests can feel that history, warmth, and care the moment they arrive.
We’re proud to have been recognized as the 2024 Virginia Campground of the Year, National RV Park of the Year in both 2018 and 2022, and Small Business of the Year in Williamsburg in 2019. We’ve also earned TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for multiple years, placing us among the top 10% of hospitality businesses worldwide.
But we’re more than just award-winning — we’re experience-focused. Guests enjoy on-site amenities like our Beach Park Playground with 130,000 pounds of beach sand and ziplines, an 85° heated pool, premium log cabins, a free game room, three playgrounds, basketball, yard games, and the only public bus stop at any Williamsburg campground.
We’re also known for our impeccably clean, modern restrooms with granite finishes, first-class Wi-Fi and cable, and special touches like free fresh coffee, donuts, and pet treats. Our dog park, relaxing fire pit areas, and friendly team make it easy to unwind and feel right at home.
What truly sets us apart is the heart we put into everything we do. Hosting isn’t just our business — it’s our family tradition.
