About this property
Peaceful, Spacious Urban Edge Villa
Our renovated villa is an urban edge piece of Wellington history in a quiet setting. Walk to downtown Wellington's fantastic shopping in Lambton Quay, CBD, Parliament Buildings (The Beehive), Railway station, bars and cafes. Take the many walking trails in the city's green belt - they start opposite the house.
Grant Road Villa is a lovely OLD (circa 1890's) urban home which was renovated several years ago, modernised where necessary but keeping the character and features that graced its period. Please note: the house is old. If this is not your jam, then please don't book and then complain later.
We believe it is suited to professionals, family groups, and those looking to relocate to Wellington needing a furnished home in the interim. We also offer a generous discount for longer term stays (some conditions apply).
There is space aplenty, as the bedrooms are large, light and airy, the lounge and dining areas are also a good size. We have two two seaters and a three seater couches in the lounge, and a smart TV with built in Chromecast, freeview and Netflix.
The beds in the twin room are both roomy King Singles, plenty big enough for adults; please note that the single beds in the larger queen rooms are standard singles intended for children. The house is well insulated and warm. There is on street parking, and one off street carpark, although larger cars such as utes or SUV's may not fit.
The house is in a quiet street on the edge of the city. Sky Stadium (affectionately known as the Cake Tin) is a 25 minute walk, the station is 15 minutes, and so is the House of Parliament (The Beehive). A large New World supermarket is 500m away, for all your food and beverage supplies. Five minutes away is Tinakori Village, a pretty little centre with many boutiques, antiques, bistros, cafes and the local pub. Another five minutes will take you to Wellington's lovely botanical gardens. There is so much within walking distance that it's better to use Google maps to check out the vicinity rather than list it all. The northern end of the city is only a short Uber or Ola ride away, and the city's buses can take you wherever you want to go. Or ride on Wellington's ubiquitous E-Scooters, just download the app for either Beam or Flamingo to locate one (or several), register, log in and off you go!
If walking bushy tracks is more your vibe, Wellington's green belt is over the road. Yes, literally. Tracks are marked, and one begins opposite the house.
Everything you need for a comfortable stay is provided - even basic kitchen supplies for cooking.
We are happy to have agreed pets to stay provided they are kept off beds and the couches. We will provide clean pet bedding if required. Pets stay free, but we may add a special cleaning fee. Please talk to us about your pet. The property is not fenced, so your dog will need to be secured on a leash when outside. The courtyard can be secured with a pet fence for small dogs that are not jumpers or escape artists! Also suitable for toddlers :-)
Should you have to cancel your reservation due to Covid19 travel restrictions or symptoms, we will refund in full. Of course, some proof will be required!
Of special note: We are within walking distance of all NZ government agencies.
Ministry of Health, Police, ACC, Ministry of Environment, The Parliament, Ministry of Education, The Treasury are all between 500m and 1.5km away.
We are also very close to the British, Canadian and Australian High Commission as well as the US, People Republic of China and Germany embassies. Ask Uncle Google for the rest.
We look forward to hosting you!

Great location, handy to villlage shoos, downtown Wgtn & Botanical Gardens. excellent size bed rooms & lounge, great kitchen & all the cooking essentials there .Enjoyed our stay, would def recommend for family & larger groups.
The property did not match the description. We have stayed in old villas in New Zealand many times but was disappointed with this one. The owner said this property would not suit those who wanted new/bland but it was the misleading description that reduced our rating. The renovation still left the house looking in need of some care (peeling paint, cracked window etc)The house was advertised as having two bathrooms - important to us as we were a group of two couples who had not travelled together before. The second bathroom is through a bare concrete floor laundry room in an addition to the original house.
This was a lovely stay, I just wish we had more time there to explore the area. Great comfortable rooms and very sweet toys and kids books that kept the little ones amused and excited to be there.
8 of us (3 couples and 2 singles) had a terrific couple of days at this house. It was very convenient and worked really well as a Wellington base for us.
Really fabulous big house with everything you need for a great stay. Four huge bedrooms and 2 bathrooms/shower rooms. Big dining/kitchen room and living area. Right on edge of Wellington centre with just a 10 minute walk to shops/bars/restaurants. Only 2 minute walk to Tinakori village. We couldn't have wished for anything better.
We had an amazing time visiting Wellington, and having a central base was part of it. It was amazing to be able to walk out the front door and have so many activities in walking distance. Thank you so much 😊

Thanks for being such a brilliant guest, Rachel. You left the house clean and tidy, and it was a pleasure to host you. Thanks for the Mothers Day choc bar!

The property is as advertised. It is a funky, old, moderately restored home. We were all comfortable. The beds were amazing. We all slept better than at home. Loved that each room could be climate controlled depending on each person. We did not have a car, but Uber is inexpensive and Cuba St for eating and shopping is a quick ride. There is a bars and a small market walking distance from the home. If you want to treat yourself to an amazing plant based dinner go to Hillside Kitchen. A quick walk away from the property.
We had a lovely time at this property with our extended family from visiting from Australia. The house is not only in a lovely and convenient location it is well equipped with all the essentials in every room. The home itself is a beautiful spacious character villa that is cosy and inviting and suits a large group really well. We will definitely recommend and stay again.
Awesome, well equipped villa - a home away from home.
Very cosy, warm with electric blankets and heaters in every room.
The children enjoyed the games and Netflix.
Very easy to walk to the Botan's, local pub for dinner - ubers just a call away.
We will be back - thank you!
Nice villa with lots of room, the owner was really helpful by cutting back his tree a little so we could park our van as parking is a huge issue in Wellington and also mailed back a forgotten item. Thank you Amanda
This property is beautiful. Full of charm and character. Loved our stay here. A peaceful haven so close to the city. Very comfortable. Loads of room. If you want 'sterile hotel' this is not the place. If you want a cosy and welcoming retreat, this is it. ❤️
Wonderful home away from home in Thorndon, Wellington
We spent great 5 nights at this lovely home in the oldest area of Wellington. The house is spacious, beds are really comfortable, quiet for sleeping. The walk downtown is abut 35 minutes, and leads to the Commonwealth Walk Way along the harbour. The Thorndon village is a quick walk and offers several options for meals.Everything we could have wanted was there for us. The home is lovingly decorated with unique art work, both on walls and surfaces. Yes it is an old home but it has lovely bones. Thanks for a great 'home away from home' for our time in Windy Wellington.

Thanks for your kind words, Judy, much appreciated.
Hi Lorraine, I'm sorry you were unhappy with your stay. I do mention in our details that the house is turn of the century. Last century, of course, but it is made very clear. The house is renovated and very well insulated, there is heating in every room and electric blankets on every bed, but I do apologise that you were cold. I think that your two star rating is not a fair assessment, but I guess your opinion is as valid as all of our other satisfied guests. Best regards, Amanda
A good set up with all the amenities we needed, including a bassinet for our baby and bonus toys for the kids to play with. Everything in the house worked but you could see that it needed maintenance for some of the finer things like door handles ect. Also parking was a bit tight which made it a bit tricky for disabled people to get in and out of the vehicle, but this is a common issue for most houses around Wellington. All in all though it was a good stay.
Nice kitchen. Both wash and dryer and a drying rack. Parking for one car only. Porch bathroom, 2 big bedrooms, one medium bedroom. Portable heaters can be moved around to heat rooms desired. Not super close to public transit, but 15” walk to town and bus to Wellington. Host responsive and has a nice orientation binder that gives lots of instructions. Nice to have an extra hand towel. Thanks.
