Riverfront Gardens Paddle to the Beach, Rejuvenation Peace & Quiet!
THE RIVERHOUSE AT RIVER ESTATE
After welcoming guests to River Estate for more than thirty years, I've noticed something. Many people arrive with an ambitious list of places they hope to see, yet by the end of their stay they often tell me that some of their favorite vacation memories were made right here.
The Riverhouse is tucked into a quiet tropical river valley on two private acres where towering emerald mountains, lush botanical gardens, and the gentle flow of the Wainiha River create a setting that seems to slow time. Mornings begin with birdsong, afternoons drift by on the riverside lanai, and before long you begin to understand why so many guests say some of their favorite vacation memories were made not while rushing from place to place, but simply by relaxing at River Estate.
Families and friends naturally gather here, while couples often tell me they love having the entire estate to themselves. The luxury isn't found in crowds or schedules. It's found in space, privacy, and the freedom to spend your days exactly as you choose.
One of River Estate's most memorable experiences begins just outside your door. Launch a kayak or paddleboard easily from the riverbank and enjoy a leisurely paddle downstream to a secluded beach just two blocks away—one that remains largely undiscovered because there is no public parking. I can arrange for rented paddle boards, kayaks and bicycles to be delivered to the house and be waiting for your arrival as well as consult with you and book all the best activities at a discount. Bring a picnic, walk the shoreline, watch the surf, then enjoy a peaceful paddle back through the calm waters of the Wainiha River to your own private sanctuary. It's a simple experience that guests talk about again and again because it captures the spirit of this special place.
The Riverhouse has been thoughtfully furnished to reflect the warmth and timeless character of Old Hawaiʻi while providing the comfort today's travelers appreciate. Authentic 1930s Hawaiian artwork, beautifully restored 1930s curly maple hardwood furniture in the primary suite, quality Persian rugs throughout the bedrooms and dining room, and carefully selected furnishings create a home that feels welcoming rather than formal. Every room has been designed to encourage conversation, relaxation, and the pleasure of spending unhurried time together.
Perfectly located between Hanalei and Hāʻena State Park, River Estate offers convenient access to world-famous beaches, hiking trails, snorkeling, restaurants, farmers markets, and scenic drives while remaining peacefully removed from the crowds. It's an ideal place to explore the North Shore, but it's equally rewarding to spend an afternoon doing nothing more than reading beside the river or wandering through the gardens.
I've called Kauaʻi home for more than fifty years and have had the privilege of welcoming guests to River Estate for over three decades. One of the greatest pleasures of hosting is helping visitors discover the island beyond the guidebooks—the hidden beaches, favorite local restaurants, scenic drives, hikes, and quiet places that have made me fall in love with Kauaʻi over the years. Many guests have told me that these recommendations, together with personal attention before and during their stay, became one of the most memorable parts of their vacation.
My hope has always been that guests leave with more than wonderful photographs. I hope they leave feeling rested, reconnected, and with a deeper appreciation for the quieter, more authentic side of Kauaʻi. Nothing is more rewarding than welcoming families back years later and hearing that River Estate has become part of their favorite island memories.
Whether you're celebrating a special occasion, gathering with family, or simply looking for a place where life slows down for a while, the Riverhouse offers something increasingly difficult to find—the timeless beauty, peaceful rhythm, and genuine spirit of Old Hawaiʻi.

About the host
Hosted by MARK BARBANELL
Aloha, I'm Mark.
When I first came to Kauaʻi in 1970 on what was supposed to be a surfing trip, I never imagined this island would become my home. More than fifty years later, I still feel the same sense of gratitude every morning when I wake up here.
River Estate has been part of my life for over three decades, and welcoming guests from around the world has become one of its greatest rewards. I don't think of hosting as simply providing a vacation rental. My goal has always been to help guests experience the Kauaʻi I've been fortunate to know and love for more than half a century.
One of the greatest compliments I receive is hearing that guests discovered places they never would have found on their own or that my recommendations helped make their vacation more relaxing and memorable. I'm always happy to share favorite beaches, scenic drives, local restaurants, hiking trails, snorkeling spots, and special places that don't always make it into the guidebooks.
Every guest enjoys Kauaʻi differently. Some appreciate detailed recommendations, while others simply want complete privacy. I'm happy to be as involved—or as unobtrusive—as you'd like, and I'm always available before and during your stay if you have questions or need local advice.
When I'm not helping guests, you'll usually find me working around River Estate, caring for the gardens, maintaining the homes, or enjoying a quiet paddle on the Wainiha River. River Estate has truly been a labor of love, and I feel fortunate to share it with people who appreciate its peaceful setting and the quieter side of Old Hawaiʻi.
My hope is that you'll leave with wonderful memories, a deeper appreciation for Kauaʻi, and perhaps even the desire to return one day. Nothing brings me greater satisfaction than welcoming returning guests and seeing families return to create new memories together.
I look forward to welcoming you to my favorite place on Earth.
Why they chose this property
I sometimes think that River Estate chose me more than I chose it.
When I first came to Kauaʻi in 1970 with two friends on what was supposed to be a surfing trip, the island was a very different place. Tourism was still in its early days, there were few visitors, and we spent our first couple of months camping our way around the island. It gave me the chance to experience Kauaʻi in a way that's almost impossible today. That same feeling is still here at River Estate and the surrounding area. Old Hawaii survives here.
The first time I saw the Wainiha Valley, I was immediately drawn to it. There was something about the river, the towering green mountains, and the peaceful feeling of the valley that stayed with me. Not long afterward, a friend mentioned a piece of property he had decided not to buy. I went to see it, and that land eventually became River Estate.
Over the years I've watched many parts of Kauaʻi change, but Wainiha has held on to much of what first captured my heart. It remains one of the few places where you can still experience the quieter, more authentic side of the island. Mornings begin with birdsong instead of traffic, evenings are filled with the sound of the river and the breeze through the palms, and life naturally slows to the pace that first made me fall in love with this valley.
One of my favorite things about River Estate is that you can launch a kayak or paddleboard from the property and paddle down the Wainiha River to a secluded beach just two blocks away with nobody aroun. Guests often tell me that this simple adventure becomes one of the highlights of their stay.
Although River Estate feels wonderfully secluded, you're only minutes from Hanalei, Hāʻena State Park, Keʻe Beach, beautiful hikes, local restaurants, and many of the North Shore's most memorable places. After more than fifty years, I still can't imagine living anywhere else, and I hope that while you're here you'll discover why this special valley has meant so much to me.
What makes this property unique
What really makes River Estate truly unique isn't simply the home or its setting—it's the experience of staying here. Over the 30 years of hosting visitors, I've come to believe that experiences like this have become increasingly rare in Hawaii. River Estate offers a peaceful, private retreat where the natural beauty, slower pace, and authentic spirit of Old Hawaiʻi still remain. It's a place where many guests find themselves slowing down, reconnecting with one another, and discovering that some of their favorite vacation memories are created not by rushing from one attraction to the next, but by simply being here. My guests often tell me they planned to spend every day exploring the island, only to discover that some of their favorite memories were made simply relaxing here.
One of the most memorable experiences begins right outside your door. Launch a kayak or paddleboard from the property and enjoy a peaceful paddle down the Wainiha River to a secluded beach just two blocks away where there is no public parking and, at times, you'll have the beach almost entirely to yourself. It's one of those simple experiences that guests remember long after they've returned home.
Just as important is what you won't find here. There are no crowded resorts, busy streets, or commercial distractions—only birdsong in the morning, the gentle sound of the river, tropical gardens, and the feeling that life has slowed to a more natural pace. I also believe a vacation is about more than where you stay. Before you arrive and throughout your visit, I'm happy to share the local knowledge I've gained over more than fifty years on Kauaʻi—favorite beaches, scenic drives, restaurants, hikes, and the hidden places that rarely make it into guidebooks. My hope is that you'll leave not only with wonderful memories of River Estate, but with a deeper appreciation for the quieter, more authentic side of Kauaʻi that has inspired me to make this valley my home for more than half a century.
