About this property
Historic cottage with harbour views
This two bedroomed cottage C.1880 is located on a stunning site 3 min drive from the car ferry. Stroll to the cafe, art gallery, pub, dairy, post office, RSA or bowls club. Take in the heritage walk around the village or just unwind with far reaching views in front of you.
Refurbished in recent years this is a very tidy cottage. Whilst it's a good place to rest if passing through it also makes an excellent base to discover Northland's history, beaches and walks. An excellent stopover on Northland's Twin Coast Cycle Trail, Pou Herenga Tai.
Previously known as ‘Beach Road Cottage’ the cottage has been renamed ‘Orowaru’ to better reflect the surrounding area and acknowledge Māori heritage. Orowaru means ‘sound of rippling water’. You will hear the cottage keep its namesake as you lie in bed listening to the gentle waves of the Harbour ripple by outside.

A beautiful cottage with everything you could want for a getaway! Fantastic views over the water from the deck and thoughtful notes throughout the house. We really enjoyed our overnight stay!

Peaceful stay in a beautiful cottage. Kohukohu is historic, quiet and totally charming. The cottage is so comfortable and spotless, everything is provided. The view over the harbour is delightful. Truly recommend for a relaxing getaway.
Lovely cottage, fantastic amenities, beautifully quiet position overlooking the Hokianga and stunning sunrises from the front verandah. Great place for a peaceful stay. Thank you!
Lovely, peaceful little cottage with everything you need. Great view of the Hokianga river. Fantastic new driveway, beautifully kept gardens. Have stayed here before and would definitely stay here again.

Beach Road Cottage
A perfect spot with great views. Cottage is charming, clean and well appointed. The very poor shower flow was our only disappointment.
Beach cottage (also called Orowaru cottage) is a gem. We had a great week there. I can particularly recommend sitting on the front verandah watching the tide roll in and out. Deeply peaceful. And well appointed for your every need. We used the cottage as a base to explore the Hokianga and Whangape Harbours. So many marae, so many early churches, friendly locals wherever we went. I came home with a lovely handmade rug from the Kohukohu Village Arts. The little Kohukohu library is another gem.
Some lucky team members got to stay in this tiny bit of paradise when up north on business. They raved about the location and the set up. So good I will be booking some time there myself when I am allowed across the border. Olivia and Dan were super hosts. Communication was excellent.

Thank you Bruce! Our property manager Nadia tells us your team members treated the cottage very respectfully and left it clean and tidy - please pass on our thanks to them. You are welcome anytime :-)
Stayed over for 2 nights here, while attending a large family and community event re my brother who died in April.
We were very comfortable here, and the cottage is very attractive, obviously historic. It was super-well equipped with everything you'd need. Easy access from the road, close to the Kohukohu village, and a clear view across the harbour in front. Thankyou for having us, we'd come again if the need or opportunity arose.
Quiet stay in old but quaint cottage. Enjoyed the hospitality of local shop/bar/cafe staff. So helpful and proud of what NZ has to offer. But, one never leaves enough time to fully enjoy the area!! Our loss.
Enjoyed yesteryear charm. Excellent little touches.
Be prepared to travel for Cafe's in Rawene. Great to walk the Kohukohu village up past the school to appreciate the wonderful old villas.
Most were built in the 1800's. Best to purchase a concession card for ferry travel. Much cheaper.
