Mökki Cottage Downtown - a minute walk to pub, coffee shop and harbor
The Mökki Cottage is an excellent home base from which to explore and enjoy Grand Marais - whether that’s summer festivals, fall colors, fat biking, or Nordic skiing. Located only steps away from the harbor, this quaint home offers a rural feel while being within minutes of restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops, the North House Folk School, the Art Colony, and so much more.
The space This cozy house has great curb appeal with its colorful and cheery Scandinavian design. Its warm interior finish has preserved some of the original 1938 construction such as maple hardwood flooring throughout.
The home offers a nice balance of natural light through plentiful windows while still offering privacy from the lovely wooded property. The raised bed garden, wildflowers, clover ground cover, yellow roses, and mountain ash trees fill the yard giving it a wonderfully wild and natural feel.
The home has a cafe/booth-style eating nook with wrap-around windows…perfect for quaint dinners or for reading and writing.
The galley-style kitchen has a bar stool seating area; ideal for hanging out during meal preparation or simply for sipping your morning coffee.
Sit back in the open-concept living room or in the summer, relax on the lovely front porch in a comfy hanging chair.
The cabin is designed for 2 but can handle up to 4 guests who are looking for a more affordable stay. There is a double pull-out sofa with a mattress topper in the living room - offering limited privacy and comfort for the additional guests.
Guest access As guests, you'll have private access to the entire house for the duration of your stay.
Neighborhood overview A quaint, walkable area, the cabin is nestled just across from the local library and one street away from Lake Superior and the old Gunflint Trail road.
Getting around The beauty of this house lies not only in its charm, but also in its accessible location. Shops, restaurants and the beach are just a short walk from the cabin. You can head up the Gunflint Trail with access to the Boundary Waters by car, just minutes from the house.

The host ensured I was informed about my initial reservation, then a couple days prior to arrival, an email arrived with instructions on entry and other useful notes. The Cottage is charming, close to everything in Grand Marais, and was well suited for my week long stay.Due to significantly cold, well below zero temps, I did not get as much outdoor activity in but that was on me! I walked a great deal, supported the local shops, and had a great "solo retreat".
cute and snug cottage that had everything we needed for two days in the off-season. beds very comfortable, including the sofa bed, which was honestly a shock (it is very hard to find a comfy sofa bed). they’ve made excellent use of the small space and the nerd in me loved staying in a Montgomery Ward kit house! wifi needs updating.
Great location. The cabin in small but meets the needs a person would want for a nice getaway. Walking distance to downtown and right behind a brewery with great food and beer.
My roommates and I enjoyed our stay immensely! This cottage was very well kept and is in a convenient location. I would definitely recommend this location to my friends and family looking for a secluded getaway near a cozy town.
We truly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. We parked the car and walked all over Grand Marais! We love coming to the North Shore and the cottage was perfect for all our needs, will definitely stay again!
We have stayed in the Mokki cottage 3 years in a row for winter getaways. We love the cute and clever space, the convenient and cozy gas fireplace and the fabulous location within the town of Grand Marais, MN
The cottage just was great, from its origin story - it was built from a Montgomery Ward catalog kit! - to its current whimsical decor.
Even though you are right downtown, the trees make it seem you're out in the woods.
Clean, cozy, unique & close to the downtown area (shopping, restaurants, activities etc.).
If you’re staying while there’s an event or festival in town (like we did), be aware there is NO OFF STREET PARKING (or reserved on street parking for the property) so you may have to park a few blocks away like we did.
We enjoyed our stay at the Mokki cottage! The directions of how to get there and details about parking, heating, etc. were very detailed and helpful. The cabin was very clean and had most kitchen items we needed. It is a very cute cabin with lots of character and interesting decor! The history of how it was built and renovated is very interesting so take the time to read about it in the informational notebook that is provided about the cabin and Grand Marais area. It is also helpful to know about things to do and places to eat in the area. There is no tv in the cabin and the wifi connection is not the greatest so if someone really needs to be connected with the outside world, this may not be the place for them! Also there is just a small mini fridge with a very small ice box. No ice maker.
Please check the coffee pot. It may be me, but I couldn’t get it to work. I think it’s the switch. (Yes, I did plug it in )

Mokki cottage
Underwhelmed. Cabin was 30 degrees upon arrival. It took a few hours to heat to 65 degrees. A cold night.
The pictures online look cute but the place in person was not cozy. We have stayed at other mokki places and loved them but I’d use this one as a last resort.

Response from VrboOwner on 14 Feb, 2024
We immediately responded to the guest when they messaged us that the unit was cold upon check in, which is certainly an unpleasant arrival experience! An issue we've never had in the past. We received no response for the duration of their multi-day stay. The guest eventually confirmed that the thermostat read 60F upon arrival and not the commented 30F. Guest was always pleasant in prior exchanges but the lack of communication on this situation is dissapointing as we could have taken immediate action to promptly rectify the situation with guidance on how to crank up all existing heating systems and provide extra portable heaters to accelerate the warming of the cabin to a cozy temperature.
Charming little cottage that is close to the harbor. We loved that we were walking distance to downtown and the harbor. Great communication and responsiveness.
Thank you, Mokki Cottages!
Wonderful location and property. Terrible mattress.
We loved everything about this place. It was clean, centrally located, cozy (love the gas fireplace), perfect amount of amenities and convenient layout.
Can’t get past the awful mattress. We arrived on a Friday night…tossed and turned on what seemed like a spongy sheet of plywood…then hiked a solid day on Saturday…and tossed and turned Saturday night too. We woke up feeling like we’d not slept a wink…sore and tired.
The place is great and we’d come back - but only if there is a decent mattress that enables a good night’s sleep.
This quaint little cabin served us during our short getaway. It is portrayed accurately on the listing, and communication with the property manager was great. It was small, simple, and cozy during a blustery weather system that came through the area. Gale force winds out on the majestic lake Superior, rains along the shoreline, and snow up on the Gunflint were kept at bay here in this little retreat. The small cabin provides all you need. Although it has wifii, it does not have a television - and we survived! :) Thank you for sharing this cute retreat with us!
This was our second year of staying at Mokki Cabin for a few days' Nordic Skiing and enjoying the winter vibe in Grand Marais. We just love the little cabin! I LOVE having a cheery fireplace (this one is gas so easy to use). We had everything needed for a great stay!
We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. Our kids mentioned several times how much they love the smell and how it made them feel cozy. The location made for perfect apres ski with pubs and restaurants within walking distance.
