Clean. Modern. Convenient. Bright. Those are words that we often use with a home in the suburbs. Private. Relaxing. Good swimming and boating. Starry skies. Evening Fires. These are phrases we use when we talk about cottage vacations. It's not often that the two mindsets mix so freely as they do at Sand Lake Getaway!
This cottage is situated on the Magnetawan River a very short distance from Sand Lake, giving the same feeling as having your home in a cul-de-sac close to all the conveniences. The greater lake is always readily available to you but the serenity and privacy (no neighbours across the river!) gives you the rest you crave.
The first thing you will notice when you arrive is that the cottage is the sun and shade gazebo with seating and BBQ. This is a lovely outdoor gathering spot and will no doubt be the focal point of a few conversations while the outdoor cook in your group prepares the meal. As you walk around to the water side of the property, you will notice a nicely manicured lawn leading to the riverbank. There is a large sunny deck on the water side of the cottage to complement the gazebo. You notice the fire pit on you way to the dock and look forward to a marshmallow roast or two, perhaps with a couple of tall tales thrown in. At dockside, you notice how the riverbank creates a cozy feel and how the dock affords wonderful views up the river and down towards the lake. Largely sheltered from wind and offering both shade and sun, we think a LOT of time will be spent here, whether it's swimming, relaxing, or launching into a kayak exploration of the local waterways.
Let's step inside the cottage and look around a little. The focus here is simple elegance. Wood floors throughout the upper level give a bright clean feel to the living room, main bath and 2 bedrooms on this level. Large screen TV's are great for movie nights, and the kitchen and dining areas let you enjoy prepare and enjoy meals in comfort. Oh, we almost forgot the star of this level - a wonderful sun room with corner windows with a view down river towards the lake. The wood panelled walls, the comfortable seating and picturesque views lets you know you are truly in a "Muskoka room".
Downstairs, there is another large bedroom and a family room for entertainment. We think this area will be popular with the children and teens in the group who will want to claim a space of their own for the week. There is also a 4-piece bath on this level.
You'll probably enjoy a stroll or two down the local roads, and cyclists will want to bring their gear. A scenic 30km ride down Chetwynd road takes you into Burks Falls where you can refuel at a local cafe. Burks Falls is also the place for groceries and other essentials. Even closer, the town of Kearney (just 10 minutes away) offers a few eateries and convenience stores. The larger center of Huntsville, famous for cottage country atmosphere, is just a half-hour drive and offers restaurants and entertainment. If you've heard about Algonquin Park all your life and want to see it, it's also just a 30 minute drive to the Rain Lake access point or Forestry Tower Road.
Sand Lake Getaway is the perfect spot for families wanting to enjoy cottage country without sacrificing the modern comforts.

Trivia Sand Lake is part of the Magnetawan River system. The river enters the lake at the north shore and flows out of the south end of the lake. There are two islands in the lake. Blueberry Island is located near the northern shore of the lake, close to the mouth of the Magnetawan River. The larger Emerald Island is located in the west bay of the lake, west of Rock Point. A very clean and gorgeous cottage. My stay was absolutely what I needed to slow down from City living. The cottage had everything for a great stay, the water was beyond beautiful from the dock and the windows of the cottage. The property is a gem.
A lovely property in a quiet cul de sac on Sand Lake. Spacious and well equipped. Ten minutes from Kearney for basic provisions and half an hour from Huntsville for all amenities. We had a problem gaining access to the property but this was rapidly resolved thanks to god communication with the host.
An amazing experience. From communication with owners and staff to the immaculate condition this property shines. We truely appreciate the opportunity to have stayed and hope to do so again.
The property was clean and stocked with everything needed. Comfortable and roomy, we had alot of fun. Kids took the kayaks around, tried some fishing and lots of time around the firepit. I would definitely recommend this spot for quiet, rest and relaxation.
Great place overall. Only complaint is that you have to take garbage with you when you leave. Other than that it was exactly as described. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to review Sand Lake Getaway Cottage Mitch! We're glad you enjoyed your stay and found it just as described. We hope to host you again sometime!
We had a combined family vacation - 6 adults and one 3 year old. The cottage is very well appointed with all of the amenities that one could want. Our only draw back was the lack of a sandy shore and safe water entrance for the little one. The cottage is on a very narrow part of the river, which is absolutely wonderful for the peace and solitude but again, not conducive for our little one. The dock was a great thing to have, especially when the chairs were set up. We enjoyed a camp site fire almost every night which was magnificent. The selection of games, books, entertainment (wifi based)was truly an added bonus of which we took full advantage. We really enjoyed the use of the hot tub and the outdoor patio with the fire table. All in all, we had a great time.
We stayed 3 nights with our elderly dogs just because we needed to get away, however briefly. It is so quiet and peaceful! Nothing but birdsong, breeze, and the gentle lapping of water against the riverbank. There are properties on both sides but no one in residence at either so very private.
We slept soundly in the primary bedroom on a very good mattress. We sat in the hot tub a lot. We sat on the deck, napped in the hammock, watched a movie or 2 and just unwound. It was fabulous!
The house is very clean. The kitchen is small but functional and has most of what we needed to prepare a couple simple meals. The coffee maker seems to have a bit of personality - - complains loudly when heating up bit them gets down the business.
