About the host
Your host
The most important fact is that, for the time being at least, we are not there when guests stay. We trust you with our house and you trust us to do the best we can for you.
Why they chose this property
The rugged Canadian Shield landscape, interspersing ridges, forests, meadows and fields with lakes and rivers, is charming for visitors of a certain type.
What makes this property unique
This property was settled almost 200 years ago and we bought the house forty-five years ago after the last member of the original family had died of old age. As we explain elsewhere in this listing, the Bell House is not for squeamish condo dwellers looking for a Best Western equivalent. If it's the actual Eastern Canadian countryside you're looking for, if little rivers and forest walks and (as a bonus) the great Thousand Islands just fifteen minutes away, are your cup of tea, the Bell House might fit your bill. The house itself is in the so-called Ontario farmhouse gothic style, started around 1870 and added to since.
This is not a staged rental property. It's our country home and you'll have sole access to it during your stay as our guests. Charleston Lake Provincial Park is just down the road. There are canoes available nearby and even a boat launch on the lake at the end of our road (if you happen to have a boat).
The Bell House is shaded in the summer and visitors generally agree it's comfortable. Some of our family furniture is older than the house; some upholstery is worn; some floor boards creak. The windows are mostly as old as the structure and there are very few modern aluminum or plastic components. With the exception of a dishwasher, however, most modern conveniences are present (and the wifi does work).
We provide a fairly detailed "manual" to all our guests and have wonderful neighbours who attend to cleaning, maintenance and general assistance when we're away so you can stay.
