We rented this home for three weeks in August 2025 because it advertised “20’ 130hp Boat INCLUDED” on Lake Toxaway, a private lake with no public boats allowed, thus this boat was the deciding factor for us. When we arrived, there was no boat. We contacted host and they admitted the boat had been broken and removed for repair weeks earlier yet assumed the boat would be available by our check-in date.Host provided no alternative options only stating, “These things take time and are out of our control as repairs in the mountain are slower.” The host’s boat did not show up until the late afternoon on the 20th of our 21-day stay.This was made worse by the Owners’ onerous lease payment terms: 62% deposit required at booking, balance due four weeks before arrival, and no refunds 90 days prior.We understand unpredictable occurrences happen which sometimes require modifications to satisfy both Owners’/Renters’ expectations, however, dealing with a host who does not provide the most important feature to their premise, a boat as advertised, then fails to provide an alternative solution or remedy, and neglects to communicate, is extremely reckless and unprofessional.Bottom line is the property was misrepresented, boat was never provided, the host was unwilling to reimburse us for the total cost of leasing a comparable boat, and the communication was poor. Proceed with caution if you are interested in this home as this has been a very expensive and unpleasant experience for us.

It’s like waking up to a dream. Love the area. Plenty of shopping, great restaurants. The lake is gorgeous. House was clean and well appointed. The boat was a bonus.

The property owners had a well-organized and efficient check-in plan. The process was proactively communicated several days before arrival and all conceivable questions anticipated and answered. Once inside, the home was very well-maintained, the kitchen well-equipped, and certainly adequate to meet all of our family's needs.

A Gem!

We had a blast: breathtaking views, lovely home, a boat for a pleasure, cruises and tubing, we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Rosie could not have been more responsive. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Definitely would love to come back.

A great week

We enjoyed a wonderful week on beautiful Lake Toxaway. The location of this property can‘t be beaten and the home was exceptionally clean and well equipped. Additionally, the Hosts, Rosie and Steve, were incredibly nice and responsive.

Thanksgiving 2024

Our family of 5 adults and one dog stayed for 4 days. The view was awesome! Two decks and two living spaces were awesome except the upstairs fireplace was not working properly but we were able to enjoy the downstairs fireplace. Kitchen is very small but we had everything we needed. Very clean and cozy. Only complaint was that the owners had security cameras on the outside and you will be watched. FYI.

Great Getaway

Our visit was during the quiet season, at the end of summer. We enjoyed a relaxing view of the lake from both upper and lower porches. The slope of the lot down to the water was doable for 65-70 year olds as long as we took our time. The kitchen was well stocked and the entire home extremely clean. The owners were quick to respond to any questions we had.

Lake Vacation

We had a great family time on the lake! Everything was exactly as described. Having the boat was a huge benefit! Everything was very clean and comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

Refreshing Retreat

We were definitely ready for Some time away this summer as a family and Shady Rest was a great fit for our needs. The location is beautiful and right on the lake and all of the hydrangeas were in bloom. The kids were able to fish off the dock, Or relax on the lawn. We could roast s’mores over the fire in the evening After a day of fun on the lake. It was awesome to have the boat available and be able to use the Water skis as well as the tube for water time. The kayaks were perfect for paddling around in the early mornings were right around sunset with the mountains in the backdrop. The house has two beautiful big porches that overlook the lake and the property with plenty of chairs and areas to play cards or have breakfast together while enjoying the cool mountain air and the Vistas. The kitchen was well equipped with the dishware we needed, and we were able to prepare most of our meals right at the house. Shady Rest is just a short drive from several hiking areas and waterfalls as well. Steve and Rosie were easy to reach by phone if we had any questions Would definitely visit this lovely place again !!

Great time !

The house was very pleasing. The views from the porches were beautiful. We cooked most of the time and the kitchen was well equipped and grill worked great. It was extremely clean. Beds were very comfortable. It was definitely a bonus to have the boat available. Weather was fantastic!!

Shady Rest - Lake Toxaway

Five years between visits is too long! We stayed at Shady Rest in 07/18 and again recently. The home is very well maintained and there were many updates from our last visit. With six adults, a 10 yo and a 13 yo, there was plenty of room to spread out. The home includes all the creature comforts, including Wifi and new streaming tv's, a well-stocked kitchen, and a deck boat. Yes, a boat! Water-skiing and tubing were a part of our daily activities, as well as cruising the shoreline and enjoying the charm of Lake Toxaway. Steve and Rosie are terrific hosts and wonderful at responding to any inquiries/issues immediately. It is our sincere desire to get back there as often as we are able! Patty and Ron H.

Another Wonderful Stay 6/17-24

This is our second time staying at Steve and Rosie’s! We had a great week despite the rainy weather. You cannot beat the location on this beautiful lake! The layout of the house works well for our family. The kitchen is well stocked. We enjoyed sunrise and afternoon cocktails from the decks. The kids had a blast in the lake. Didn’t let the rain and fog stop them at all! I read a couple books outside on the deck and had a regular hummingbird visitor. Steve and Rosie were very accessible when we needed them as we lost power in one of the storms and a couple of other questions arise. We got to enjoy a couple of restaurants, wineries and breweries in the area this year. All were great experiences. All in all, we had another relaxing vacation at one of our favorite places! Thanks so much :). We will be back!

Beautiful Location

Lake Toxaway is absolutely beautiful. The house is located close to amazing hiking trails and water falls. Our three boys ages 7,9 and 10 had a blast in the boat fishing and tubing! We made lasting memories. The Shades were very good at communicating. We truly enjoyed our stay!!
